    I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

    It makes no sense to buy physical gold and have someone else store it. The reason you buy physical gold is to have it on you in case of an emergency or a monetary collapse.
    If you buy above the minimum for most dealers then shipping and delivery is free, and storage is free, so the only costs you should be contending with are the buy premium and the sell price. You should always be getting at least spot price when you sell, and possibly more depending on the form of gold. If they offer less, then walk away, they're double dipping hoping your desperate to sell.
    Which means that what really matters is getting the best buy price you can at the lowest premium.
    PS If you're going to pay someone to "store" your gold, just buy the etf instead and stop losing value. The ONLY reason to ever store gold would be because it's part of a retirement account and you're not allowed to receive it until it matures.

    You forgot that with ETF's you have the opportunity to do options. Either getting paid to buy stock at a lower price (selling puts) or selling cover calls on future prices of Gold to make money in between to buy more gold. This is what people do with stock that pays no dividends. If you play it right you can make a huge percentage just by selling covered calls.

    There is a bid/ask price for ETFs that is effectively a premium on the spread. So why is that not part of your calculation for ETFs? This can be 0.2%-0.5% and possibly higher if market liquidity dries up.

    Wouldn't theft also count as a form of 3rd party risk? It is a bit lower risk, in my opinion, as much more wealth can be stolen through phishing or hacking.
    Personally, I mix physical and ETF and assign specific jobs to each. The physical part is for wealth insurance purposes (hedge against devaluing pension benefits) and long term wealth transportation into the future. The ETF-part is for ease of rebalancing the portfolio and being able to profit from, often very short lived, extreme price spikes.

    The comparison is incomplete if u do not consider the costs, the waiting time, the various restrictions and risks involved in getting physical delivery from the ETF. I had to wade through pages of small print and came up with a dozen of questions regarding the process of getting physical delivery from the UBS GOLD ETF and am still waiting for them to answer and I bet they will do all what they can to avoid giving me an official answer in writing.
    I therefore think that ETF is superior to holding physical gold only as long as u do not have to get physical delivery of the gold stored in ETF’s vault. BTW the gold is not even stored by the ETF but by a custodian and its subcustodians. The subcustodians do not assume any responsibility in case the gold is lost for reasons beyond their control and the custodians do not assume any responsibility for the loss of gold stored by sub-custodians and of course the ETF does not assume any responsibility whatsoever for the loss of gold stored by the custodian and/or its subcustodians. So the stage is perfectly set for the gold to “evaporate” once the circumstances are ripe and u will have zero chance to hold the ETF (or even the main custodian) accountable for the loss.

      Hi - if you are buying 1-2 coins yes 👍 many investors buy and hold much larger amounts so they will be paying for storage each month

    • @JustXCeeD
      @JustXCeeD 3 года назад +1

      @@NathanHQ Yes but paying 0.12 for storage is better than paying 0.4 for gld (both are annual costs). If you are keeping them for a long time, the GLD annual costs will catch up to and then exceed the amount you paid for the premium. Isn't this correct?

    This is a good one! I had a lot of questions about the gold industry. Yes I prefer physical too, because I seen a couple of friends here in Houston being scammed with a company that went out of business. So I say if you are going to put 100,000 in investing, go for it, get a company, but if you are trying to invest less than 10,000 then I say don't tell anybody and keep it in a safe 😉 or you can also put it in a box at the bank.

    I agree with your last point, if you invest in a stock, index fund, or ETF you're going through a 3rd party. So there is always some level of risk. I think we put some special value on things that are tangible, like being able to hold a gold coin vs an ETF which basically exists digitally. I'm guilty of this myself, I think dividend paying stocks are wonderful because the dividend is physical cash and it's easy to understand where it came from. However, that might not always be the best option for maximizing your money. It can be difficult to remove ourselves from the physical bias we have on these things. Either way, great video Nathan, you really have been doing a lot of research. Like-20!

    • @NathanHQ
      @NathanHQ  3 года назад

      Yes totally. Nearly everything we buy involves a 3rd party right. But so many people will only every buy the physical only for gold. Thanks for watching mate!

    • @NathanHQ
      @NathanHQ  3 года назад +1

      I never used to like ETFs as gold bigs warned me away...but I actually think they can make sense in certain situations...same with PAXG... as a concept it makes sense...and if the fees are lower than ETFs then I would be happy...it is still backed by gold but without the hassle. Each situation matters...if you only have 1-2 ounces then in your hand is great...if you have 50+ then it makes sense :)

    Great presentation Nathan! Nothing like holding physical gold in your hands, but like you mention, ETF is a more efficient way to hold gold value but with limited 3rd party risk. I personally trade a couple gold ETF's but if I want longer term gold exposure, I prefer doing it through Barrick Gold (GOLD) even though correlation to gold prices is about .60, I get paid a small dividend holding Barrick. But that is just a personal preference, I think holding physical gold and a gold ETF can be great ways to diversify into metals. Nice job with the video. Cheers!

    The question is: why you're buying gold? Are you doing this because you want to preserve value of your money in case of some recesion? Or you believe that there will be some kind of zombie apocalypse, all financial institutions will be gone, and people will be fighting for food or other basic commodities?

    Some ETFs are based on the futures or spot price per oz so if you ever want to take possession it's best to check in advance.

      You can actually dollar cost average using etf, and when you reach 1oz worth of gold, you can trade your etf for the real thing (by selling your etf and buying gold at the same time of course)

    Awesome video Nathan! My one remaining question is what happens to the value of a holding in a gold ETF if everyone starts panicking and selling off their holdings? Specifically if they start selling their gold ETF holdings? Does the value of your own holding dip because of these sell offs or does it just stay fixed to the commodity price of gold? Thanks in advance!
