Hello, thank you for watching the video. They still live on barges in cramped spaces for several days, weeks, even a month or more. They still have houses on the mainland, they will return home to rest for a few days and then continue to make a living on their barges.
it's not an extinct profession, in Europe are many live on board cargo/container/tanker boats/ships. most of them also have a normal house so this would be their second home.
is it possible to open more gates then only one? it would reduce the strong current and easier for in and out going traffic
