Too close to the air diffuser or”air vent” would not work in a real fire if the air handler was running. It would blow all the smoke away from the detector and replace it with clean fresh air. Additionally in normal operation it will contaminate the detector with those little dust bunnies you see around air vents. This cause nuisance alarms. Lastly testing any fire detector with real combustion of any kind is strongly discouraged. You can accidentally cause a real fire 😮
