    Stretching, rolling and recovery supported my injury free running after I had a break from running due to knee pain

    Running helped me so much with my knees. I have pain every now and then but that's usually a product of me not doing enough stretching. Mobility Matters!

    Totally agree that knee pain is due to tight quads. I had knee pain every single day. I started really stretching my quads in different ways after my runs and the pain is mostly gone. Still comes back sometimes after my long runs but stretching several times during the day, keeps the pain away!

    I will soon be 61. I feel quite lucky (so far) that I have yet to experience knee pain, and that is even after marathons, hilly runs and trail runs. And this is without doing any knee strengthening exercises. I have done a lot of hiking and cycling in my life, so that must have helped. The only time I had a knee issue, it was the result of Lyme disease.
    Nice to see you are back to clear blue skies on the west coast. 😀

    I wholeheartedly agree that many times the knee pain is linked to a muscle tightness issue somewhere else. I found this to be the case on my right side, which requires just a little more warmup and foam rolling than my left, I’m guessing due to an old skiing injury where I tore my ACL & MCL. If I properly warmup with some drills and strides, and do the post-run stretching and care we should all be doing, I’m good to go. If I slack off, I can feel the tightness begin to creep in around the knee which results in some pain.

    I just started running this year and fell in love with it! I had no knee pain till the colder weather hit (I live in Alberta) I decided to just stop running till it warms up again. Going to do all these things and now search to see if you have any videos about knee pain in colder weather so next year maybe I won't have to stop!

    Switching to minimalistic shoes was one of the best steps in my running journey. Running close to the ground has ensured that my balance is better, I am running taller, with lighter and quicker strides. Awesome video as always!

    Once I started pigeon pose to stretch out my glutes it really helped issues with knee soreness. Been running for like 8 months now consistently without any injury 🥳
    PS are those stance socks??

    TL;DR: running fixed my chronic knee pain/discomfort in 2 months
    I assumed I wouldn't be able to run because I smashed my knee into the floor rink skating a few years ago, didn't go to the hospital, and couldn't bend my leg for 2/3 months (probably fractured my kneecap).
    Considering that for the last 2 years I couldn't stand up for more than 20 minutes without soreness, which became unbearable after an hour, I assumed I wouldn't be able to run.
    2 months ago I started running, placing a heavy emphasis on good form. I started with a mile each way, resting 4/5 times throughout the run because I haven't done cardio for 3 years (used to box 3-5hours a week and had a 45bpm resting heart rate). 2 months later, I can stand up all day with no knee pain, my knees don't get sore after a run, and I can do a 10k with no rest.
    I'd take that as proof that running doesn't cause knee pain, and has actually massively strengthened the tendons and ligaments around my knees after I damaged them years ago, to the point that I am now pain free.

    I developed knee pain whilst running and could not figure out why. I even stopped running for two weeks and it persisted.
    Little did I realise it was the lunges I’d started doing that were causing it and they were supposed to be strengthening my knees.
    Once I stopped those, the knee pain went.

      Sorry to hear that Frank! But let's make sure we are clear about something. Lunges and squats *do* play an important role in strengthening you knees by engaging key muscles around it. But your mechanics really matter here. Try this video here to see what I mean: ruclips.net/video/CoP_SBtKM2Q/видео.html

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben 3 года назад +1

      I also have issues with lunges. I used to have issues with squats too, but learned my knees are happiest with toes turned out slightly more than typical. Lunges my knees don't like regardless of mechanics, probably from an old car accident.

    • @Moist._Robot
      @Moist._Robot 3 года назад +1

      Kelly Benedetti
      Yeh it was a while ago when I was about 33. The lunges were easy which is why I didn’t suspect them as the cause.
      I just stopped doing them and never had the pain again. You just find out what works I guess.

    3:39 Does it mean that (similar to getting thicker/more cushion shoes) running on grass also make it “ sponger terrain” and my feet would need to strike heavier to find the sense of stability? So should I avoid running on grass so my body would be like “oh shit I need to pick up the slacks and keep the form”?

    Sometimes in my long runs, my knee hurts, like its like the bones, but only in long distance, if I run a 2k in 10 mins,like more on intensity, its just okay🇵🇭

    So for us without Iphones, what metronome app would you recommend then? I guess cadence is definitely something I could work on, as I've watched a lot of you guys' videos before. And I definitely sometimes catch myself doing way slower cadence, but the second I do, I just try to make it faster. But never actually ran with a metronome or beat to try and run at the "correct" cadence though. I always find myself struggling to run anything past 10km, as the bottom of my feet start to "sleep" and go numb, especially so if I'm running on asphalt and not a threadmill or out in terrain (the latter it never happens, so I'm definitely guessing it has something to do wit hthe hardness of the terrain)

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  3 года назад +1

      Good question. Try searching for any music based metronome app that allows you to adjust the rhythm you want.

    • @reetjain2626
      @reetjain2626 3 года назад

      You shouldn't everyday.
      Run 5-6 times a week,
      Warm-up before every run,
      Cooldown and stretch after every run,
      Run:
      1 long run.
      1 speed run with intervals.
      1 tempo run.
      & 2 recovery runs in between.
      Increase the distance you run weekly.
      Take appropriate Rest & Recover.
      Eat the right foods.
      Avoid running on empty stomach.
      Download Nike+ Run Club App, they have Guided Runs and also they make customised training plans for you based on your data. They also help to track your runs, pace, distance etc. You can also use Strava or any other app you like.
      But NRC works for me.
      Watch Videos on HOW TO RUN THE RIGHT WAY, Keeping your head up, leaning forward, dropping your shoulders and moving them so they don't hurt.
      Among other things.
      Good luck and Happy Running.

    Does height affect running cadence? I'm basically a hobbit, so my natural running cadence is hard to bring below 85. Should I adjust upward in relation to height? Or is 85 kind of universal for all heights? (For context, I'm about 5'5" or 165cm)

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  3 года назад

      Height does affect cadence! Longer legged individuals with longer pendulums for legs do tend to have slightly lower cadence than those with shorter legs. And yes its absolutely ok to be above 85. This is just a range really.

    i just came back from and injury and did my first run yesterday on a threadmill. i tried to strike forefoot for the first time instead of mid. when i got home my medial side of my right knee feels aching to press but no pain when walking.
    my right arch is always on a lower pronated side but i wore a stability shoe yesterday. any reason why in having medial knee ache

    • @giantkidtiff
      @giantkidtiff 3 года назад

      changing your foot strike is sometimes more harmful than helpful. i would be careful with that. i actually tried switching my foot strike and hated myself for it. the next day my legs were hurting so bad. focus on posture/arms/engaging core/making sure your hips are forward and lifting your legs. your foot strike is naturally going to follow.
