    I love Billy Joel's music since 1976. I'm 63 years old. I'm from Spain. B.J. is for me the best singer and songwriter of the world alive. Music is melody. Music is feelings, emotion. Music is passion for live. Billy Joel knows how capting the life and reconverting in feelings only with a piano and his voice in extraordinary songs. Nobody can make it like him. Thank you Billy for being there right now singing and playing your Steinway.
    And thank you Split Owl for sharing your emotion with us, Billy Joel fans.

    I'm 60 from Australia and have been a massive Billy Joel since the mid 70s. It's testament to his music that he reaches such a wide audience. I love the new song too. I also interpreted it as a message to his fans. But as fans we may be biased.

    It’s a beautiful song. Very profound. Lots of regret. But hope too. Past and present. It feels like it’s about aging, mortality and the different seasons of life and relationships. But it’s ultimately a commitment to being present for his wife.

      I feel like there are plenty of angles and directions we could take this song but I believe really is about the fans and songwriting. Surface level it sounds like a relationship. Just like everyone assumed “Temptation” was about a relationship but was in fact about his daughter. He leaves his songs open to interpretation so everyone can feel his music individually.

    I’m a lifetime Joel fan I’m 68 follower from his first releases. My son is 38 and has been a fan (by virtue of hearing his music as newborn). We have been to several of his Madison Square Garden Concerts. He is Amazing Live and it is wonderful to see so many different people, young and old singing along.

    It's so nice to see such a young man (you) appreciate an 'older guy' as a singer & composer. Billy Joel is my favorite of all time, and the man STILL sells out MSG. This song cuts deep...I'm 58 and have loved him for decades. You're right - this song can mean different things to different people - I'm guessing that's the sign of a great songwriter, and he IS a storyteller. Part of me wonders if this is about Christie Brinkley - I've always hoped they would reunite someday :)

    Also been a huge fan as a young guy. When I was 4, big shot was my favorite song. At 5 my mom got me 52nd street and it became my favorite album. At 10 I bought my first cd songs in the attic. I was 11 and watched him live new years eve for the 2000 new years special. Seen him 5 times. There isn't a single song by his I dont know by hewrt.. check out the 1970 album attila. His heavy metal album. It's pretty fucking awsome. He also has songs like where's the revolution and the sigfreid line which were never released but are also amazing

Da giovane "live" era un vero portento .... Ma altri andavano più di moda ... Magari perché belli o effeminati ecc ecc ......Piano Man .... Per lui la musica un gioco facile

      This is the only song in his catalog that he didn’t write himself. Freddy Wexler talked him into working on the song and when they were done Billy asked him who were they going to get to sing it and Freddy told him “you are”. About 99% of his songs he wrote the music before he wrote the words. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” is the one he wrote the words first and added the music. He’s not a fan of performing it.

      @@split_owl Italian Restaurant is usually people's favorite. When I was in high school, I loved 'the stranger'. I don't know if those were hits, I bought the albums before Napster and listened to them front to back.
      My favorite album was his greatest hits volumes, so I might be missing a few.

      I would say Italian Restaurant was more a hit but not a super hit if that makes sense. The Stranger was more of a hidden gem! He usually does that in Japan where it was more popular. Both amazing songs!

    I listened to this on release day and was underwhelmed, as there were some pretty obvious computer shenanigans going on with it. Listen to his live Grammy performance of this song and you realize what the studio version did wrong. Billy Joel is well known for amazing live performances, so much so that some of the songs we take as the "official standard" come from live performances rather than studio albums. This one sadly fell victim to his co-creator and producer Freddie Wexler. Wexler typifies the "modern producer" with their unwavering ability to take a good real, human performance and apply computer effects to make it something it isn't. I'll keep going back to the live performance, but not this studio version that has most of the life sucked out of it.

    • @split_owl
      @split_owl  6 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve accepted that all studio versions are like this and will be reacting to his live performances when possible!

    • @somewhat.random
      @somewhat.random 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@split_owl Well, if you're talking about Billy Joel really none of his other studio productions uses this kind of computer manipulation simply because it didn't exist in 1993 (first Auto-Tune release was in 1997). So his earlier recordings have traditional "production" elements applied, but not the wholesale replacement that happens when using pitch correction. Said replacement being a hallmark of current popular music. It's one reason I find it so difficult to listen to a lot of current artists, because the artifacts created by the manipulation are very clear if you know what you're listening to. That being said, for some reason Joel just manages to consistently capture that undefined "magic in a bottle" in his live shows that very few if any other artist ever can do. I've been lucky to see him in the '80's, 90's and '00's (last time was in 2009) and each show had at least one song where I just went "wow, that was amazing". All while delivering a high quality show overall, that is probably the best musically you'll ever see from a rock performer. (Eric Clapton is the only guy I've seen who came close musically.) What I'm long windedly trying to say: by all means listen to some of the live stuff, but don't feel you need to limit yourself. His studio records ARE good. It's just this particular one that had the misfortune of being produced by a "modern" producer. (Ok. Except for Cold Spring Harbor. That thing was a train wreck.)
