      @@jamesprigioni Hi James, I’ve learned so much from your channel since I started gardening a few years ago. I’m in NJ as well. I need advice on squash vine borers, I have read and viewed a plethora of information and have tried every trick in the book. I must have thousands of them in the soil. It’s only my second season in this yard so I’m not sure I can do row covers because they’re in the soil. I’ve spent countless hours a week picking off the eggs from May until presently. I put BT in the soil with seedlings also injecting BT into stems every few days. Put a few pins in plants, have used yellow soapy bowls, rubbed the stems with neem/peppermint/citronella oils, wrapped with foil, sprayed the yard, turned over the soil. You name it, I’ve most likely tried it. I’ve lost 99% of my 50 squash plants I started with. Also have cut the larva out and covered the roots again. I’ve actually found a dozen in one plant alone. I had some trap crops, also some plants completely sealed in greenhouse as well. Every single squash plant has damage or has died. The borers even get in thru the tiniest plants and even veins on the leaves. I’ve been so diligent. The one thing I haven’t tried is to stop growing squash, I’m about to cry!!! Any advice???

      @@Ninabeana1313 there is an older video of his that shows a remedy that involves covering part of the vine with soil in order to produce new roots so it can handle the physical removal of the borer. I've also had success with BT. I use a meat injector to go straight into the vine. Saved a plant this year with it. I've found it useful to let squash grow into two vines so you can sacrifice one if need be. The art of war also applies to the garden. Good luck and may your zucchini flourish

    I’m just starting my food forest in my front yard here in Missouri. It’s a lot of startup costs and whatnot, but I know that when there’s loads of food out in my yard, I’m going to be so happy I did this. And with the rising costs of food these days, I can’t be mad at the cost of starting up raised beds and soil purchases. It’s all going to be money saved and earned back when I harvest.

    James, I live in the Catawba Grape Capitol of the World (over 500 acres of them in my town). You do not need to thin the bunches like you would on a peach or other fruit tree. It won't increase the size or flavor or quality. Also, the sucker you removed at the base can be easily rooted in wet sand (just remove all the big leaves) to make another vine. You can't have too many Catawba grapes in this world!

    Thank goodness the squash issue is pollination, not pest, disease, or watering pressure! I was ready to give up on trying to grow squash. Couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I can easily pollenate them myself with a small soft paint brush or a cotton swab like you did. Thanks James!

    • @8thcelisabeth
      @8thcelisabeth 2 года назад +1

      I agree, I wish my problem was pollination, it's such an easy problem to solve. If I have enough male flowers, I will usually just pluck the anther (male flower part) and tuck it in the stigma (female flower part), or pollinate many female fruits with a few anthers.
      I have a guide to squash vine borers on my website, if interested. Link on my About page. I am converting more lawn to garden, a huge section is converted to squash and melon beds and my biggest issue is squash vine borers. I am an unwilling expert lol.

    Squash vine borrers are such a difficult pest to deal with! I found a wonderful youtuber the other day that suggests using caterpillar killer by safer brand but instead of spraying the plant with the mixture, she uses a syringe and injects it where the damage is and I tried it this week and all the damage has stopped! I tried the method you use James and I was always to late or it just never worked for me to bury the damaged areas and I'm so happy I found this other way. It didn't take long to do and it's so much easier and less time consuming to just inject with the caterpillar killer! I highly recommend!

    I really look forward to your tours every weekend. I catch myself grinning like an idiot, I cant help it! Your garden is GOALS man! You are growing more food on in that backyard than a lot of the big homesteaders are. Its so encouraging! And I am AMAZED that I didnt see a single cabbage moth in this entire video. But I did notice eggs on ONE plant, towards the beginning-ish. It also encouraged me to see a tiny bit of pink tinge on your califlower. I was very upset last year when my califlower turned pinkish and thought maybe I just shouldnt try to grow it here in Kansas City. Seeing yours encourages me to try again next year and not be expecting it to look like grocery store califlower.

      I'm about 3 hrs North of KC, and we have the same issue with brassicas in the spring. Shooting for fall to hopefully have a better crop.

      Hi! I live in Florida, what I do to avoid moth is to plant earlier! My crucíferos are all planted in November and December! A lot of people start growing in basement, as soon grown is safe in your area you transplant your crops. Plant blueberries and raspberries in your garden, they grow wonderful there! I even plant my squash early too, just to avoid very worm temperature bring bugs too. Good luck. 🍀

    @Connie W omg Connie I love that. I grew up gardening with my dad. went on to struggle with drug addiction for over a decade. Been clean 4 yrs now, I am 34, with a fiance, kid on the way, and bought a home 2yrs ago. Last spring/summer I spent countless hours clearing weeds and redo'ing my entire back yard and bought some transplants to garden. I am not a health freak, or even veggie guy, hell i still smoke cigs. But when I started harvesting organic food from my backyard it sparked that passion again. And i enjoy the veggies now. Because I grew them. It is such a joy watching a plant go from seed to harvest. You feel accomplished, and deep down like what humans are meant to do. Not to mention it is a healthy hobby, useful hobby, and lastly a necessary hobby (there may come a day 5-25yrs from now where there is a food shortage or society crumbles.) Since last summer I have done SOOO much research and preparation for this season and my garden this year is LEGIT thus far. James got me into perennials more, so this year I got 7 fruit trees now, 5 varieties of berries, herbs, etc. It will only get more exciting and rewarding each year Connie, keep it up! (that miserable guy deleted that thread and i wanted to reply to you still, hope you see this)

    I HOPE YOU READ THIS! If you published a book or pamphlet that laid out all of your garden, the landscaping, the companion crop make ups you have, and especially all of the different varieties of perennial foods, including the varieties that you chose in order to stagger the harvest, (the staggering system you use altogether really)..... I would purchase that in a heartbeat!! I'm sure many of your viewers would too 🤗 Peace and blessings James.

    James, your videos keep on inspiring me in working with my own food forest at the back of my house. I would like you to know that because of your past videos on your seed grown apple I got motivated on growing my own. And because of that I am proud to be the first person to grow apple here in the Province of Iloilo, Philippines. I hope my apple would be loaded with fruits when the right time comes, just like your apple trees. James, I appreciate your and thank you very much..

    My first year having a garden. Your channel and MIGardener have been a great inspiration and wealth of knowledge. Originally from Jersey, now in NC, man I love your energy. Looking at your raised beds I realized I can clearly load up thicker for next year. I just started harvesting beans and jalapenos but if I had realized how close I could've crammed them in my harvest would be incredible. I'm excited to try new vegetables, like swiss chard and new varieties of others. Grew up watching Crockett's Victory Garden, and now I'm here, watching you!
