- Plum, ume, blossom tells us the spring has come. "Plum blossom, recall me, When it blows in the spring ---" 9th century politician and poet, Michizane Sugawara recites the famous poem, tanka, when he relegated. Some might think it is still cold yet, but that's because we are on the solar calendar now. Only Chinese and Japanese eat plum fruit; pikles, liquerur, candy. Plum pikles on rice is the most known fast food in Japan. The sour taste of plum pikles, ume-boshi, makes our mouths watered.
Plum tree has rugged branches and small pretty flower on those. Cherry blossom move in wind graceful, while plum flower never sway. It doesn't decrease the beauty of plum, but the attractiveness of plum is the umbalaneced, pretty flower on strong branch, like small bird on muscle arm. Кино
The first stroke does it all, doesn't it? Very intuitive, I like it lot.
thank you kazu for posting this video! I started taking sumi-e classes last year. i started off with bamboo, then the orchid, and now the plum branch with blossoms. this art is so beautiful and simple, yet it is pretty hard to master! since becoming a student of sumi-e my appreciation for this art has greatly increased, now that i know how much discipline goes into each stroke of the brush... much love from hawaii
Very graceful plum!
¡¡The damn cars brought me back into this century!!
Beautiful painting :)
I really like your English translations added to your videos now. It helps me understand so much more. Thank you.
Very good video and painting!
Beautiful video man, you make it look so easy. I'm gonna practice this kind of painting.
damn i wouldn't be able to do that, so whether or not it's as good as some thought or not, that's awesome.
Maravilloso, me fascinó!
wonderful, i try to learn sumi-e painting technique, but it's so difficult and so wonderful
very nice. Have you ever heard of Hokushin Fugino? He did a calligraphy of the character "mu" for me some years ago when he was in Boston. It is one of my favorite pieces of art. Thanks for posting
very nice. i enjoyed this.
his skills are very good. i am also a calligrapher(ist) and sometimes i cant even get all the hairs in the brush to go the way i want it to:)
I like it! I saw you get startled by the horn as well. :)
nice work ;)
go on!
I love your comments in the video))They always make me smile=)
Hi BRADYHANSEN I think you were asking about kits earlier. I have seen kits in the Hobby Lobby and I'm sure that other art stores have them. There are different sized brushed made of different materials like goat hair, etc. Some include instructional books and exercises. Check out yanghaiying's channel and her website. I am putting a sumi-e kit on my Christmas wish list.
Do you think you can share were someone in the united states could buy good quality sumi e brushes? Most of them seem to be Chinese and I want something that is only mean for sumi e. Any links our advice would be great.

is it possible to use a synthetic brush?
@spongebobnik dude that was three years ago.
would it be disrespectfull to drill holes in the end of the brushes that do not have loops to add loops for hanging?
