    A relaxing and gorgeous fall hike at Pictured Rocks, right on Lake Superior. One of the best hikes I have ever had. In this video you see the hike, then I talk about how to do the hike, and a little bit about gear I used at Pictured Rocks.

    Your video style/mood is SPOT ON! Went on this very same loop hike last month, started the hike early like you mentioned, went clockwise basically saw no one till chapel beach. you captured the feel. Found the trail on AllTrails also. Just discovered your channel! I’m older so your ultra lite vids are really helpful. Thank you

    Hey Matt. Great pacing on the video. I think you hit a good balance between too many short clips with lots of cuts and long drawn out shots that just go on way too long. The music complemented the pace as well. I like the combo of the music/nature vibe of the trip then a talking head wrap up afterwards. I think that's a good way to get information across but also have the relaxing trip footage.

    Great video. I've hiked a similar loop a couple of times, going by Mosquito Beach. Definitely saw a group of bros dragging a cooler through the mud to Mosquito Beach. We almost told them it wasn't a sandy beach like they were probably expecting, but we didn't want to ruin the surprise.

    I'm a fan of minimalist trip videos like the ones you've been making. Keep at it. If you're happy with the RX100's video quality and functionality but don't want to add a ton of weight to your film kit I'd recommend the Sony ZV1. It's basically an RX100 but has been made specifically for video. Image stabilization is on point for walking shots and it has a mic input that you can attach any of the popular rode mics. I use the Rode Video Micro with my ZV1 and I'm pretty happy with the audio quality.

    This more minimalist style is a nice change. I probably go a little heavy on the voiceovers and music in my videos because I’m afraid to lose my viewers. Can I ask what kind of retention rates you’re getting?

    • @MattShafter
      @MattShafter  3 года назад

      On this video, by 30 seconds in i'm down to 60% retention and by the end of the trail video i'm down to 44%. This will certainly improve if the trail has more stunning visuals. So, not horrible, but not good either. My recent gear videos get solid 70% the whole way. I subbed you! Nice stuff. People will undoubtedly like your voice on the voiceover, so you might play to your strength there?

  • @itssnakemeat4971
    @itssnakemeat4971 3 года назад

    Awesome hike obviously and your shots capture that for me. I also like the format where you provide summary/info at the end.
    Probably an outside opinion, but I've gotten tired of this kind of music that doesn't go anywhere. It lacks any kind of recognizable theme and just vamps on one or two chords. After all, landscape mood music was reserved for late night infomercials only 20 years ago and feel like it's taken over. It's not all bad or even always but it's often very safe music that's meant to not be noticed.
    That being said, I'm also just a big fan of the sound of the wind in the trees and it's one of my favorite things to wake up to when I backpack. Not nearly as much experience waking up to waves but both sounds were appreciated in this vid. If you're already leaning in that direction editing-wise you have my encouragement for sure.

    I can't say enough about the beauty of the subject and the great work you did with editing (and keeping all those extra hikers out of your shots). From a technical standpoint, I visually pick up on some "blockiness" in how the digital video is captured. I know just enough to be dangerous, but I would suggest adding neutral density filters to your camera equipment. Digital cameras and bright subjects tend to overwork the framerate and remove the "blur" that our eyes are used to. Putting some "sunglasses" on your camera to slow the framerate and tweaking the manual settings (forcing to ISO 100, manually forcing the frame rate) might smooth that digital perfection. I'm hoping someone with more technical digital filming experience will chime in. I just know that adding ND filters to my 4k drone (and tweaking settings) made my digital bright-day captures look more like film.

    • @MattShafter
      @MattShafter  3 года назад

      I have a tiny RX100IV so i'm not sure I can get the filters, can I? Soon I'll get a full frame something. Leaning towards a Sony A7C! I'll check your drone stuff out!

    By the way, do you prefer rainpants over windpants ? What are your conclusions about this piece of gear included in your 2020 gear list ?
    Will you continue to use rainpant or go back to windpants ?

    The music may have a bit too loud in some sections which can distract the ambience that you’re going for.
    In terms of promoting your social platforms, it helps if you add it in to your video description along with the gear you commonly use with Amazon affiliation links if you want to earn a bit of coin.
