@@rockvilleraven Jay Leno had a great sense of humor. Ever since he retired, I don't watch any late night talk show hosts at all. The ones today are extremely vulgar and sickening! Bleh! 🤮
One reason why I enjoy watching Groucho Marx on You Bet Your Life is because a lot of his jokes were awesome and he was able to tell them without some people saying that they're "politically incorrect." He teased everyone no matter what background they came from. Kudos to Groucho Marx!!
What a great relationship he had with his daughter. I love this show. AndWho doesn’t love Groucho?! No matter how bad my day is, I always count on Groucho Marx for a good laugh.. ❤️😂
Aw, I like how Groucho offered the pregnant contestant a chair. The B29 joke was hilarious. And the phone conversation with little Melinda was adorable.
Groucho is my hero...Such quit wit and wisdom with humor his sentiments and whose words of wisdom will live on long after his passing alongside the likes of Oscar Wllde, Mark Twain or Martin Luther King. I love these clips of this show it was fantastic thanks for posting.
When the man called and the little girl said Groucho was her father I instantly went "AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!" It was so cute. I really like this show although I thought I wouldn't in the beginning but I do. Thank you for uploading the episodes!
And I don't think it was a staged moment. . . it could have been, but my gut feeling is that it was only set up to the extent that Groucho made sure Melinda would answer the phone. But her answer that her favorite show was YBYL seems spontaneous and real. :)
Working my way through all your YBYL uploads and this one with the telephone calls is in my top ten faves so far. Mind you I like any episodes with a good helping of Fenneman. As Groucho would say, "RAWR" ;)
Sheila B I had never seen this episode until I got this copy a few years ago. It's a really good one! Nice to read that you've been watching and enjoying the videos. This show has been off the radar for WAY too long. Other than the two great sets published by Shout Factory 10 years ago, YBYL has been basically completely out of circulation for over 20 years. (Those sets are on sale now, by the way, for around $10 each-- they're the only DVD sets of YBYL really worth buying, loaded with extras, and I have never posted (and will never post) episodes that were included in those two sets, so as not to undermine the fantastic efforts of Shout Factory to make this material available.
I really appreciate you uploading what you have so far. I would love to buy the DVDs but at the moment I only have a Reg 2 DVD player as I am in the UK, so I wouldn't be able to play them. :(
Sheila B Oh, that's really a shame! I don't know why so many of Shout's DVD releases are region coded. They just published a brand new, amazing set of rare Marx Bros video, "The Marx Bros TV Collection", and that too is only playable on region one players. My only suggestion is possibly to play them on a computer if you're really interested. DVD drives on computers are usually region coded, too, but they also usually allow the user to change the region code several times before locking permanently. But I know lots of folks hate watching video on their computers, so I understand this might not work for you at all.
Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it as I watch most things on my computer anyhow. There is a small clip from YBYL showing the lady who was enamored of Fenneman in the clip on You Tube entitled, "Those Wonderful TV Games Shows part 3" I hope to see the full episode someday.
Sheila B Yes, someone asked me about that show a while back, and I couldn't figure out which one it was. It might be one of the 36 episodes on the Shout Factory discs, in which case it's not going to end up posted here. But if it's not one of those 36, I know I have it and it will be (or already has been) posted.
Great episode! "That's not Tranquilar, that's Shangrilar!" "Come out here, Fenneman, but put your shoes on first." I love the way Groucho always dotes on little Melinda. And I remember as a very young kid always liking that musical ditty while the wheel was spinning. It's a very imaginative arrangement.

Without missing a beat, Groucho, vigorously pumping the good Father's hand, retorted: And thank you, Father, for all the joy you've taken out of the world!

I am puzzled and saddened by the negative comments about Ester Friesen. She seems like a friendly person who is simply honest that LeRoy is not someone she is attracted to. Have we progressed so little in terms of double standard than men think they have the right to declare when a woman is unattractive to them but a woman should swoon at their good fortune that any man might be interested in them? Or is it simply that she isn't entitled to her opinion and should be flattered at any attention because she doesn't meet _your_ standard of beauty?
Lois Simmons yeah she seemed to be very nice beautiful woman who just happened to have a thing for groucho and shes not the first woman contestant to say that either, but people will be people especially when it comes to men seeing something they percieve to be snobbish in a woman.
Lois Simmons ok but can't we simply laugh and enjoy humor anymore without overanalyzing. re progressing does not mean vacuuming the humor out of everything in the name of one pc doctrine or another; I hope we never progress to a humorless society where even gentle pokes at others, or self deprecating humor is gone. whilst respecting pi there and ourselves, we should not take ourselves or others that seriously either.
I have a sense of humor and, I believe, a gift for comedy, and I really love and enjoy these YBYL episodes. I'm 61, and I remember these episodes way back when they ran as reruns locally here in New York; for some reason, I don't recall seeing this episode, and while I thought it was hilarious, I found myself disappointed at Ester's "snub" of the gentleman; I thought he was a nice, good looking man with a nice disposition. Groucho a lot of times makes with these "hook-up" lines when a man and woman appear- maybe she felt embarrassed or maybe she was being a snob, not sure. I didn't appreciate the "not my type" line, and I'm not even into this politically correct BS that has run rampant in society the past 30-some odd years.
Whether it was a man or woman making the comment, it was insensitive. I think she was just so excited to be on the show - in Groucho's company - that she let her manners slip. Or maybe she didn't have more manners than that. When rejecting someone, especially publicly, one should have enough empathy not to cause embarrassment.
