Oh my god dude your channel is such an underrated gem. I can’t believe you aren’t as big as other video essayists like Jacob Geller or Super Eye Patch Wolf. You are crazy talented and I hope you keep making these videos for years to come
From 41:15 to 43:15 it felt like I was listening to another version of myself. It felt like it was describing my day today before I watched this video, as I am laying down on my couch because my bed is too covered in junk to use, awake in the middle of the night because I tried to go to sleep at a healthy hour so of course I cannot sleep for more than 2 hours. I don’t think I have watched this channel before, but I know I will have to look into you more after that
Your singular ability to reach into the tiniest, ugliest, most scared part of my heart and shake it really hard while simultaneously making me feel like I'm not alone, while ALSO just appreciating how a good story (or in your case, video) is able to evoke those kinds of feelings or send those messages is nothing short of astounding. And to do it multiple times besides! I genuinely cannot understand why you're such a hidden gem of a channel. There's a level of humanity, of depth in your videos that I can't find anywhere else. Maybe this game didnt make me cry but you sure did. I hope you dont ever listen to the symbiote in your head telling you your voice isnt worthy of being heard. More than anyone in this mess of a site, I think you're deserving of it. I think this may have been the first time in a few years I felt something touch me so personally and so deeply. thank you. now... to find the courage to climb that mountain despite the crippling fear, I guess :')
I remember in Prototype how genuinely difficult it was to keep from hurting civilians. It would be cool in a game like this to show the destructive nature of your power by creating an actual cost. Yes, normal peter is weaker, but he's in control of the damage he does. There is no colateral. Or play as the symbiot and genuinely struggle to keep the cost of life down.
Hey Alex, i hope you're doing okay and living comfortably, i hope to see the channel grow and for you to find even more success because you deserve to be able to make a living off of this content. I pray your passion is rewarded and that you are and will be happy in life.
I don’t feel like the power fantasy gameplay and powerlessness theme is as contradictory as you say. All the things that make the characters feel powerless are things in their secret identity lives. Yeah Peter can defeat a giant lizard but that’s not gonna help him pay his bills or hold a job. Despite all the power these characters possess, they can still be rendered powerless by everyday struggles. It was said that whenever Spider-Man wins, Peter loses. So in a game where Spider-Man has so much power, it makes sense that Peter has so little. That’s my take anyway.
Both Miles and Peter continuously choose Spider-Man over their personal lives or real jobs/school. Thus, they are bound to be better Spider-Men than ordinary people with relationships, personal lives and jobs. We see the extent of their power in gameplay, but the actual story cutscenes of their lives show just how damaging that focus can be. For example, we see Miles and Peter fighting Sandman, but immediately after, it hits them in full force when Peter loses his job and Miles (I believe) misses Mr Atlas or something, who was supposed to help him with his college essay. Like you said, when Spider-Man wins, Peter Parker (and Miles) loses.
Your second half and conclusion really hit home for me in this current period of my life, especially your point on how the worst of someone is not all of someone; another reason in a list of many on why you're one of my favorite analysis channels. Thanks for the unique perspective on this game!
A theme of Spidey that I appreciate as of late is “be someone’s Spider-Man.” Sure, maybe you can’t stop trains or stick to walls, but you can choose to be kind. To put the needs of others above your own. That if you can help someone, even if it’s inconvenient or difficult or any number of easy excuses we could make, you should help. Pete says at the end of the third Rami film, “you always have a choice, to do what’s right.” If someone is hurting, lonely, struggling, in need, help. Be their Spider-Man. You can’t help everyone, but you can help someone!
This game tackled a Spider-Man story that’s so good. What happens when you interrupt “Great Power, Great Responsibility” differently. Venom mirrors a more global and grander approach to healing the world and Peter learns in this game that his great power is his mind and his responsibility is to help the world grow and improve. Not as Spider-Man but as Peter. I love that. Now, sure there’s so much here that’s maybe too much but I think they nailed Kraven and Lee. The first game is a masterpiece. This game doesn’t really come to that level but it’s still impressive and it’s heart is in the right place with the story
before i even watch this video, you have to know that i consume an insane amount of media a day being movies, shows and i also play games, but i mostly watch youtube and i watch a lot of it but there is no yt that i watch and remember every video that i watch besides yours. like you give whatever your talking about the justice it deserves no matter how it was perceived and i just had to tell you that that’s an amazing character trait bro. keep going imma be reacting in no time🫡
man, you have a very powerful way of speaking and grasping people’s attention, and also a great way of simplifying the story without discrediting the complexity’s and ideas of the theme and overall message that you feel the author is trying to convey. you genuinely feel the connection, i believe, that the author is trying to express and that’s just truly unbelievable. amazing vid as always bro i loved this game, it spoke to me like it spoke to you at 41:10, but on my first play thru
Finally an actual opinion on this game. Im tired of seeing people ether say its "WoKe" or that its "bad" and than give no actual criticism. 2:46 wdym for better or worse? There's nothing negative about this. Can every in the replies stop making terrible arguments for why this game is bad please?
@fire-blade354 there's negatives in the game absolutely but what I meant is the gameplay doesn't impact the story in any negative way like he said it did.
@@thegreatacolyt1277let’s not lie and say the story wasn’t rushed. It definitely fumbled a lot of some great potential but overall is still a fine game. Little bit disappointing imo but decent
42:17 This was already my favorite analysis/critique of the game. This entire section (referring to the timestamp) is really hitting way too close to home 😅.
We have had a few. But not enough. Sadly now days when a good game comes out most people who analyze it just say dumb shit give no criticism or just call it woke.
@PeterGoatParker not all but some. Alex Webbs video is good. Hightop films was good. A video by a guy named colin. And that's all the ones I remember rn.
16:43 I feel like having all the power in gameplay while being helpless in the story is fascinating. It goes to show that despite all the power you DO have, it does fuckall to help in those grounded situations like struggling to pay rent or keeping a normal job. Sure you can fly around the city but where do you lay your head at night? What does all that power do for you when it's all you have? I think it's a pretty cool angle
It's almost like we need a game that is just overcoming reliance on the black suit. Any appearance of Venom would be left for a sequel at that point giving both plots time to breathe.
I completely agree with venom being hard to adapt. In my opinion, Raimi Spider-Man 3 was a good movie, it was just shoe horned with Venom (among other studio interferences). But the real story focuses on the symbiote and internal conflict, and it works pretty well. It’s a shame because the symbiote story is good but fans will be upset if they don’t get enough Venom screen time. Raimi was in such a tough position since the movie would be better without venom but fans would be upset without venom.
I remember when the first trailer came out and people thought Spiderman was going to become Venom, not Harry. Now I'm wondering if that was the better route. Spiderman slowly becomes Venom throughout the story, becoming a monster. He kills Kraven so Miles/Harry team up to stop Peter. And Peter then kills Harry before rejecting the suit, setting up Norman for Spiderman 3 We could get a sideplot of Harry helping Miles comes to term with Martin Li and Harry steal an experimental formula from his father so he could help fight Peter-Venom with Miles, becoming a proto-Goblin. Or maybe Harry could have a reflection of Peter. A man who is weak, but accepts it. He helps Miles more on the technical side.
Another thing... one would think that peter parker would have an unlimited ammount of confidence to be succesful in his nornal life just by the fact that he is regularly accomplishing incredible feats as spiderman and consistenlty proving to himself he is amazing. This is kind of the problem I have with the character itself: he is capable of doing what few others can, being trusted with enormous responsibilities and challenges that he has proven to himself he can take care of with flying colors for years, and yet he always seems to be playing small in his real life like he didn't know he was a fucking genius/superhuman
Great Video! I feel like the sentiment of a game that makes you powerful despite the game's story is about less powerful is perfectly fit my viewpoint in Kingdom Hearts 3. Spoilers for KH3 + Remind Throughout the game's story, it has been irritatingly clear that Sora is "not strong enough" or needs something that is associated to power like The Power of Waking. But then, you play the game and you see Sora doing some batshit insane moves and doing massive AOE damage in the first couple of worlds. By which, would leave the player thinking "What is the point in going into Disney Worlds when I can go the realm of darkness to Save Aqua?" That not a good thing for the story because it's having the players slogging through all the Disney World (which may I remind, is either a retelling the same story from the movie or a separate story that can be be told in a Disney+ short) just to get to the actual story. Meanwhile, the other characters just retells what happen in the previous games and/or just meandering. On top of it too, When you do save Aqua, Ventus is like "Oh um uh, yeah, you already got the power of waking inside you lol." AND IT LIKE WHAT THE POINT THE DISNEY WORLDS THEN?!? Sorry about the rant, I just wanna give out my piece to the conversation about Spiderman 2! Thank you for listening to my TED Talk lol.
It isn't a perfect bandage but a justification I have seen in regards to Anti Venom is that if one looks at the Symbiote as an allegory to addiction, then Anti Venom is an allegory for those who have overcome their own addiction and are able to use their experiences of it to help others overcome their addictions. Like I said, it's not perfect, but it does help some. Edit: Something that I think could have been, perhaps not better, but certainly a different take, would be if, instead of them being something he has at the start of the game, the Iron Arms are something Peter built during the climax; from a gameplay perspective the Anti Venom suit is so they aren't taking away the abilities permanently, particularly since it is part of the progression tree, so players would have effectively wasted these ability points, perhaps instead it the various Iron Arm abilities would actively replace the symbiote abilites in the progression tree, either up until this point Peter didn't have abilities, or his initial abilities are stuff like say the gadgets and abilities from the old game (the single target forward attack = impact web, aoe attack = Web Blossom etc). As opposed to just getting the symbiote powers without drawbacks, Peter would be employing the technology he helped to create that Otto perverted for good, conquring the demons of his past to combat the demons of his present.
That was a really long winded way to say the game should have been coop. Also I can believe you made me cry on a random ass Thursday afternoon. Real jerk move dude
0:39 hate to be that guy, but the gameplay shown there isn't tank controls, it's the 'alternative' controls only for the RE1R and RE0 remasters. And the alternative controls actually make the game harder since it's not how the games were built. Tank controls were built with fix camera angles in mind so you will be going in the same direction each new camera angle.
“Why do these messy spider-man stories always involve Venom” because they try to squeeze in Peter having a shitty life, getting the symbiote, being an jerk to everyone, losing the symbiote, having the next host (Eddy, Harry, Flash, etc) story develop in the background until he finally gets the symbiote and then turn into Venom. While also having the side characters conflict with both main characters due to the symbiotes negative effects on both users. It’s too many plot points and conflict with everyone that it feels cluttered and kinda predictable. These stories should focus solely on Peter having the symbiote and getting over its addiction in one story. Then have Venom take over in the next story. However, they try combining two stories into one and this is the outcome.
