Prinzle It bothers me that there seems to be this encouragement of de-politicising any and all media. That “woke” politics should never be involved in any sort of movie or music. This encouragement of just demanding media not talk about anything too controversial because it’s “too political.” Like these assholes have somehow convinced kids that politics shouldn’t be in any sort of art form. Even when it’s baked into the very history of the fandom. (See chuds whining that Star Trek or Rage Against the Machine or even Watchmen of all things is suddenly getting “too political.”)
As if consuming media should just be mindless and that’s the ideal.
I dunno, it just strikes me as way too similar to the tools used by Big Brother to essentially dumb down art in order to better control the masses.
For the life of me, as a fan of Star Wars since I was 10 years old and Star Trek since I was 14 years old, I've never understood how people legit thought that those franchises were somehow "apolitical". Da fuq? Starfleet and the alien races in Star Trek are extremely obviously representations of different political ideologies and human civilizations. And how in the world could someone not see The Galactic Empire in Star Wars as a direct reference to Nazi Germany and the Rebel ALLIANCE as a reference to the Allied Forces of WWII? Are these people just that incredibly uneducated about history and politics, or are they just dumb? I understood the politics as a preteen! Did these people just watch it solely for the cool laser light shows and 'splodey ships of the space battles, and the cool-looking ships and magical, mystical Force powers while not paying attention to any of the dialog or context behind why all these people are fighting each other to the death?

The clocks is old school as fuck. We used to do that back in the day because you couldn't really track the times in places around the world without it. News rooms, airports, and military offices, mostly had these. That way, if you had to arrange a flight, or cover an international story, or call someone at another installation, you'd know when. There was usually one with Greenwich Mean Time, or Zulu.

Does anyone remember the episode of Arthur where their school catches on fire? If I'm not mistaken that was the show's response to 9/11 to show the different types of trauma people face, especially in children. This show has always been so important and dealt with touchy subjects the entire time, it's not just a show about talking animals

I feel like saying prejudice isn't racism doesn't help any discussions. Currently the word racism is used to refer to race based prejudice, as well as systemic/structural racism, and insisting on one definition of a term leads to pointless arguments about definitions. Not to mention that most people I know of use racism for race based prejudice and systemic racism for structural inequalities that affect people of different races differently.
Idk maybe it just rubs me the wrong way when people insist on prescriptivist notions of language.
I think T1J had a video on this with a similar point though, but it's been a while.
Yeah, I was a bit lost when he started trying to make that weird prejudice/racism distinction. Seems like a semantic perversion just to justify saying that reverse racism doesn't exist. Of course reverse racism exists. The difference is it has no real power and is therefore negligible.

Like I don't think there's anything dishonest or shady about giving clear definitions for words, even if they're different than commonly accepted ones. I just don't think (a) you can insist this *is* how the word is defined, or (b) that doing so produces useful conversations.
Also, side note, I presume by reverse racism you mean racial prejudice against white people, but I don't think the term makes much sense with either definition of racism. Since if by racism you mean racial prejudice, then reverse racism is just racism, not the reverse of it, and if by racism you mean systemic racism, then reverse racism would be systemic racism against white people, which doesn't exist either. Lastly, most of the people who use the term are reactionaries trying to say racism against black people isn't a problem because there's also racism against white people, so I would usually avoid the word to avoid associating myself with them.

I don't quite agree with your distinction between racism & prejudice. The term "systemic racism" exists to specify when acts of racism are indeed of a systemic or large-scale societal nature, so why must something have a history of systemic oppression behind it to be considered racist? You yourself make this distinction.
