Long Island village turning to GPS darts over police pursuits

- Police pursuits are banned in many communities, but the police chief of one Long Island village told CBS2's Jennifer McLogan on Monday he has found a safe solution.
Heard about stuff like this ten years ago. Still waiting for it to become standard to all police.
Yeah exactly. Like body cameras, simple Batman tech from the 80’s should be mandatory.
Proof no cars on mars. They can’t stop a car on the ground. They can’t put one on mars
Bait idea, probably.
It hasn't exactly been something that's considered 'high tech' for a long time, makes me wonder why it's taken so long. It also seems to rely heavily on the perpetrators being unaware if its deployment, outside of that it's easily defeated, simply reversing in to something and crushing it may be sufficient. Seasoned car thieves will surely attempt precautionary measures, surface sprays, etc.
I think it was on 'Modern Marvels (History)'.
All that Nerf gun action finally pays off
They need that device from Fast and the Furious that disables the car.
They have those already

they developed this many years ago, It is called The Patriot, it is a basically a small car that is launched from under the front end of police vehicle and goes under suspect vehicle to disable it using EMP explosives (I think it was deemd too expensive/unsafe as I never saw it move out of the testing phase).
Fast and the furious got the idea from existing tech.. as with many other movie ideas.
Why do they show it on the news? To warn them so they can take it off?
Interesting thought. News is pro criminal
Exactly what I just said before I saw your educated comment.
Psyop?
Honestly, unless they have someone looking back and then down to notice it, I doubt their mind would be calm and relaxed for them to even notice that inspector gadget is on the vehicle 🤭. I mean, if you speed away from a cop, would you stop to do a 360 to see if a strange device was sticking out saying, "I see you", before you drive to your final destination? lol
Pretty sure these dumb criminals don't watch news
props to passive solutions instead of putting innocent commuters at risk.
Defund the police = Passive solutions.
@@crobnson years ago my neighbor was driving his truck with a friend and they got rear-ended by a fleeing criminal from police.
His friend was paralysed, and he suffered severe injury but they both were paid out.
However I'm confident they'd give all the money in the world to be injury free again.
Hope you're doing better and hope this new tech catches on (while criminals get stopped too).
How does wind and speed play into acuracy when they’re moving. This demo only showed it while stationary.
@Endgame Studier 😂 in new york they love to dip in and out of traffic

Fun Fact: The average price of a home in old westbury is 2.2 million on the low end
Long Island definately has a lot of expensive homes (mostly owned by Wall Street Tycoons, or a second home for Hollywood elite).
Darts.? They should use a missile that will get them to think twice

Bingo. 'Do not pursue' policy is part of the big police reform agenda. As we all know, police reform is code for _pro-crime._
Finally! People using Batman tech!!!
You know thing are bad when the Mayor's car gets stolen and is used to commit other crimes.
What happens after the cops terminate the pursuit and suspect ditches the car?
Or realise it's been deployed, they aren't being pursued and simply jump out and remove it and continue on in the vehicle.
At least they'll find the car. Before its stolen a second time.
shhhh we don't talk about that
@@osier769 Hopefully they will make it so that the adhesive is so strong that it would take a blow torch to remove the thing, or at least a significant amount of time to remove. Im sure they will perfect it over time.
The dart detaches itself and turns into a tracking drone
Fabulous, this is a great addition to the PDs.
Until a bystander gets hit with one that misses the car. So you can track them, do realize that at some point police need to interact with the perps.
so great, you are gonna tag a bunch of stolen cars, meanwhile the criminals are literally allowed to get away.
in other countries, police can legally fire on fleeing vehicles. so weird how those countries have far lower crimes rates than America
This is such a smart solution. No need to push the suspect to do crazy things, running into innocent bystanders vehicles, possibly killing them or killing pedestrians, or people on a bike. I love this idea.🙏
Fewer kittens will be endangered as well.
RIP peoples taxes
I'd rather my tax money go to catching criminals instead of it going to welfare or foodstamps for people who don't want to work.
It won't take before criminals catch on and check the back of their vehicles as soon as police back off and before they return home. They'll just take it off and toss it on the road.
Police will be on his ass before it even hits the ground.
6k a piece? I'm in the wrong business.
That’s a great tool to catch the bad guys you put this on RUclips now even the Bad guys know about it😮
Lol right
Nothing the criminals can do about it unless they equip their cars with chaff or a high frequency jammer but that won't happen.
@@Aj-me8mo or PAM spray all over my bumper....high tech , yo...

The leadership in this city is a waste.
Not for the powers that be.
Big brother doesn't even have to pull you over anymore.
lol big brother, spot on
Spidey trackers 😂... good.
And when they dump the vehicle.......then what???? Are they still going to be in the vicinity of the vehicle when they dump it?
A couple problems with this: the perp will almost certainly hear it hit the car, and know they need to take it off when they can. Or, they will not be able to take it off, and carjack someone else.
I think the idea is to "tag" the vehicle during the pursuit or just after the vehicle pulls away from a terry stop to initiate a pursuit. This is useful in cases where the fleeing vehicle is much faster than the police cruiser and there is a potential to outrun the police. In that case, a light thump would certainly be missed by the driver due the engine noise. In addition to that, after having outrun the police, I highly doubt the suspect would have the where-with-all to perform a full visual inspection on the vehicle they just ran from the cops in.
The point of this device is to track a fleeing vehicle via GPS rather than have officers actively pursue the vehicle. The advantage is you can have unmarked units shadow the vehicle reporting locations and ideally, it's destination. Chances are, after realizing the suspect is no longer being pursued, they'll likely resume normal speeds, making a covert pursuit possible.
It's good and all, but it's not going to force criminals to suddenly follow the road rules during their efforts to put as much distance between them and police. What's stopping them from pulling over with minimal risk and removing it or backing in to something and crushing it? Seems to rely heavily on perpetrators being unaware of its deployment, but if it becomes common place there's an expectation it has. Curious to see how it plays out long term.
In the heat of the moment, it's likely the suspect will either forget the strange thump they heard, ignore it completely, or be unaware it happened at all. That assumes they know that technology exists at all. Let's not award IQ points to such people.
Gain some distance. Stop immediately pull off then peel out. For added bonus stick it to another car.
'all six patrol cars'... lol, that's it?
1:54 - 'remove label before use'
In the TV Show called "Continuum" in the very first episode at the beginning, a cop woman used this device, only it wasn't for cars, it was for humans. There was a fight between two guys and the police woman shot them with a dart. The dart was a tracking device. She said they must check into a police station before this time or you will be in much bigger trouble. It eliminated the need to arrest them at the spot. I thought it was pretty cool.
Banned in many villages but we'll go ahead and use this in your area.
Trooper Byrd used a similar device while trailing a guy going over 120 mph. Strangely, he continued to chase at these speeds for quite a while.
Really nothing seems to deter these thugs when they likely have warrants. NOBODY wants to go back to jail.
189 km/hr
But how long until the criminal being pursued to be "darted", will realize they were being tracked?
Like how *effective* would it be in short?
It's to avoid a pursuit so they do it as they're starting to drive off because they don't want to endanger the public by having a full on pursuit because the roads in the area have too many winding turns and other dangerous conditions
They won't realize it. As soon they stop, they get swarmed by jump out boys in unmarked units.
they need a lot of improvement, the GPS darts don't always stick, and the police vehicle need to be really close to launch it. So if they are close enough and the pursuit is going at a low enough speed, another option is The Grappler System. Whereas the GPS dart, once the suspect gets far enough away, they can still flee (and I am sure criminals in certain cases will just pull over and knock the GPS darts off the back of ther vehicles). When they improve drone speed/range that would be a third option to launch it from within a police vehicle and have a laser sight/tracker on the drone.
I wonder what’s the range on them as well
Spike strips don't always work. The P.I.T. maneuver doesn't always work. Tasers don't always work. The difference is a GPS dart cannot cause injury or death whereas the other 3 can. None of them are 100 percent reliable yet they are still used.
Yes the suspect CAN remove the GPS tag. However, consider the circumstances. He just lost the cops, or so he thinks. His heart is pounding through his chest. He has tunnel vision and lacks situational awareness. He's in survival mode. It is unreasonable to expect him to air up his tires or get gas after all that just as it is for him to check for GPS trackers on his car. Law enforcement are literally minutes away watching that little blip. As soon as it stops they pounce.
One of the wealthiest communities on Long Island
@Endgame Studier I don't think you understand the wealth in those areas. The long island Distressway is bad enough at 55 as well.
@Endgame Studier old Westbury is listed as the second wealthiest community in the United States
I don't think that's from speeding tickets either
@Endgame Studier since I've driven out east all my life , I agree
nobody does 55 anyway
The Belt/Southern State Parkway combo iis one of the most dangerous roads in the nation though
@Endgame Studier that one hill, heading eastbound at Eagle Avenue, is the absolute worst..come over that hill at speed and there's dead stop traffic at 50 yards
One of my favorite roads is Motor Parkway..pick it up at vets take it all the way to Ronkonkoma and come back on the expressway or 25A at night from Northport out to Port Jeff to see a gf was nice too.
@Endgame Studier
a speed limit on 231?!...ouch
STUPID IDEA!
THEN AGAIN THE BAD DUDES CAN STILL DITCH THE CAR
What was that?
GPS dart. Don't worry, 3 blocks away well jump out and scrape it off the back and leave it. Otherwise, hit it with that bat.
How do you determine who is driving the vechicle?
It’s not about who is in the vehicle it’s about tracking the vehicle without chasing it
@@nickcooler2658 So you track the car then what? The police need to interact with the people in the car at some point after they track it. There have been incidents where police turn their lights, perp runs, police don't chase the car and it crashes at the end of the block.
Also, just how would the police get into position to tag the car without chasing them? Will every traffic stop include tagging every car just in case they run?

No, no they won't. They aren't that smart.
Wow, $36K for just 6 cars. I’m sure those trackers aren’t cheap either. I was always taught you can outrun the cop but not the radio.
Okay Hank......$6K per car isn't cheap but neither is hundreds if not thousands of dollars to pay an innocent victim hurt or killed by someone running from police
Omfg, where has this agency been. Stop sticks have been around since the 90’s. And they don’t stop vehicles. People can still drive on flat tires or just the rims. And star chase has been around for over 15 years. That also doesn’t help catch criminals, it only makes it easy to find the vehicle.
Why do you need idiots always tell the crooks what’s going on??!!!
Media is anti-police.
Love it! And drones, don't forget drones can follow them wherever or even better just land on top of the car and report gps location! Or emit a micro-emp to disable the electronics of the vehicle, cutting it off!
Or hear me out, helicopters! Lol
So they can't just stop and take them off?
These are great.
They need this everywhere less people would be injured

Bravo to this police department... smartly turning to technology to avoid making bad situations worse

No, no you won't. You'll be too amped up to do anything logical. That includes removing a GPS tracker you probably don't even realize is there. But I'll humor you. So, you lost the cops. Better get that GPS tracker off right? Wrong. You get out, you walk to the back of the car. As soon as you get there, 9 unmarked units come flying in with guns drawn.......What you didn't realize is they actually used the GPS. The moment all 30 police cars backed off, the unmarked units took over. They took turns shadowing you while you slowed down and started taking back roads just to be safe. At any given time, SOMEBODY has eyes on you. As soon as you made the mistake of thinking it was over is the moment one of the unmarked unit ordered all units to close in. Really, your mistake was under estimating your enemy. That's why this works my dude.
Ooh tracker dart launcher
Awesome. But why would you put it on the news. Ever heard of the element of surprise?
Yeah but the person driving the vehicle just claims it wasn't them after the, most likely stolen, car is abandoned somewhere.. So all you are left with is an empty vehicle and no one to charge with the crime.
Because tracking the suspect with GPS and having unmarked units shadow him is not an option?
How about darts that disable a cars computer or electronics.
There are problems with this. First of all, it effectively kills the vehicle. All electronics are fried. Thats the cost of the vehicle down the drain. Secondly, high voltage electrical shock would cause injury and even death to the driver. On top of that, an incapacitated driver means no driver, which equals a hunk of metal traveling a highway speeds and Jesus at the wheel. It's bad news.
Is this legal?
as legal as stealing a car..........🤣😂🤣🤣
NERF Technology
Should do an emp dart
Maybe put limiters on Ambulances and Fire Trucks to make sure oblivious drivers don't have to turn their music down to hear sirens? Banning police chases has guaranteed more cars will be stolen and more reckless drivers on the roads.

Great idea. Allows the guy with the warrants to jump out when nobody's looking, they can dump all the guns and drugs on the way home and catch a simple evading charge. What a joke
No, the joke is you thinking unmarked units can't shadow the suspect and pounce on his ass the second he stops. That's the joke.

This idea needs improvement, first and for most the costs. It's not a bad idea but not a problem solver. Situational at best.

Yeah, but if they don’t identify the driver, how would they know who was speeding or committing the crime? This is very unprofessional it’s gonna be a he said she said thing.
