Thank you so very much for the template and the video! Beautiful roses! Thank you again!
Awe, that is awesome! The kind of flower that will last forever. My favorite kind...
I loved the simplicity of the design it produces a lovely flower with very little tools required. dont change the way you present your tutorials just to suit the hard hat brigade
Wow, very artistic! Love love love it! But most of all I LOVE your accent.
I could listen at your voice all day long. Being French Canadian, I can pick up accents very easily and yours is simply divine!
Stop saying that you are not a florists because your flower looks awesome! Be confident, Speak confidently, because an artist like you has to stand up for himself, being half as good as you are, I would!
Thank you for sharing your video.
Nicky
I remember when I could go down to the hardware store and buy sheets of copper by the foot my mic you cannot do that now that's when I stopped making roses but there's other tricks I found out I keep my eyes open always when people are doing the roof of the house some people like copper roof there's a lot of scrap that thrown in the dumpster that is small enough not to keep but pleasurable enough to make roses
( Never give up your talent )
thank you.... that was great! love your humble and down to earth tutorial
When it is all said and done I would show my flower and they would like it then give it a smell. I started putting perfume in it and was well received. It is an expensive air freshener. As always a video well made. Thank you.
lo io
That was very interesting to watch and a better looking flower than i thought it would be. Thanks gary, take care, simon.
So pretty, thank you so much for posting this, I was wanting to make a copper bird feeder and add flowers to it. Awesome video!
I came across this accidently as I've been looking at the new PMC3 ideas.
I found it fascinating-thanks Gary-could use the same idea to make a silver one.
Lovely! Liked your commentary too.
Michele
Love it and useing copper is so cool because it will patina and change over time im gona make one in the morning I have a buch of copper flashing left over from a chimney job I just did thank you for the ideas....
Good vid mate! I make copper roses and I have found if you put all the petals on flat ! Do the nut up , then start shaping them from the inside out it’s much better and easier 👍🏻
Beautiful! I'll be trying this in a scaled down version for jewelry or a small home decor piece. TFS!
Yep, should work good at that size, I guess altering the sizes could make a nice varied bunch of flowers! Have fun...
I like your anvil and all the hammers, nice tools you got there.
really nice great idea ...love it ! thank you for sharing
Fantastic loved watching!!!
Gave me some great jewelry making ideas, thank you.
So glad I found your channel line your vintage rough shop
thank you for the template iv been looking for one!
Mr. Gary, Thanks a lot for this video. I downloaded your layout and am forging the stem now. I was thinking to use aluminum 22 gauge sheet for petals 2-4 and copper for 1 and 5. Might give it a cool feel. Also, putting some twists in the stem. Exciting! Thanks again!
Excellent, thank you for posting!
Great video! Thank you!
Brilliant. Thanks for the ideas :)
it's a rose! In case you are still wondering what kind of flower you're making. ;-) I think I will try making a smaller one with a rivet in the center to hold them together and no stem. I also think I will go for more of a briar/wild rose look with only two layers of petals. Thank you so much!
Love it!! I want to make that for my hat for my mother's next wedding
Beautifully artsy
dropbox link still works
thanks!
+Niels Dijkstra That's good, thanks for letting me know.
Gorgeous
Pretty cool , I'll have to try one!!
gonna try this when i get around to makeing my forge and work bench :)
What sort of thing do you mean? A cutter for cutting them out or a veining tool for marking them or something else?
loved this video! I try it tomorrow.
i think it would look even more pretty if you use different metalls for the flower :) a flower with bras, copper, and iron would look very exotic :) maybe i will try theis too :) i think it would also look nice at the end of mono steel knife :)
I mean some sort of forming tool; either a type of forming pliers, stamp, and/or raising/doming stake of some sort on which to hammer the 3-D shape of the leaf when the metal is laid on top of it.
LINDA FLOR!!!OBRIGADO POR ENSINAR!!!!
Most excellent, thanks
@finster101 Thanks.... I cheated! The leaves are steel and bought as individual pieces. All I did was tack weld them together and then tacked them onto the stem.....
How would you fix a copper rivet? The reason I use a bolt is so that you can tighten everything up holding the parts in place. The hole in the "bud" is blind and tapped, no way to fix a rivet. As I said in another reply if you get it right you can't see the bolt
@Lakesideforge No, 8mm is 5/16, 10mm is 3/8. Sorry should have said that for my international viewers.... :o)
Thank you 🤟🏻🥰
You’re welcome 😊
muy bonito and ingenioso! gracias!
@MrJsowa unfortunately we don't have railroad spikes over here!
Yeah, you can do everything he did there, then instead of finishing by using a bolt you can make a copper rivet and it'll camouflage perfectly with the rest of the petals.
Hi Lynda, Sorry you're having trouble downloading the template. If the link opens when you click on it all you need to do is right click on the image and choose "save image as".
Try again and if you have no luck mail me again and I will mail it to you tonight when I get home in front of my computer.
Really nice
very nice!
Post a video of the result, i'd be interested to see it...
This was a great tutorial. I work with copper quite a bit in jewelry making though there were many great blacksmithing techniques I am unfamiliar with. could you recommend any good books or learning materials for Blacksmiths / Metal smiths? Thank you
Annie McPhee Glad you liked it, unfortunately, I am self taught as a blacksmith so have never used any books, most of my knowledge has come from working with other blacksmiths and you tube!
I too am self taught with more than 15 years expierence so far. That's what makes working with metals so great, you're never finished learning, theres always something new and interesting just around the corner :0 Isn't RUclips great :0 Thanks again I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos
Gary, hello again. I posted a video on the copper aluminum rose but I am not sure it worked. Not so tech savoy. Recently, I developed a new patina solution that oxidizes to deep blue. I think I will use this rose layout of yours with my patina stained copper. Might be interesting.
I enjoy your videos thank you for making them. How about as a follow up a video on making the leaves and sticking them on? Not sure how you did that. Are the leaves steel and you welded them on or solder or some other process?
Very nice work! I make jewelry in which I create copper flowers and you gave me some good tips that will make these easier and save some time. I've been looking for some sort of shaping tool for making realistic leaves. Can you tell me where to get somethng like that?
Gary, very interesting flower....beautiful actually. I have one problem with it though. Can't you do something about the bolt in the middle so that it doesn't look like a bolt that you buy at the hardware store....specifically silver? Can't something be done to possible to change the color like enameling before you put it in the flower? I think I'd like to try to make one. Thank you!
merci beaucoup
very good video,i think one made of steel would look great.I know ive seen this comment beneath your videos before but....the list of cool tricks and things to make just keeps getting longer with every one of your videos i watch
Don't know really, probably 22 gauge, but most should work.
The bigger four are roughly 3"
would like to see how the leaves were made and attached.
Not really any idea where you might find something like that. You could ask your local blacksmith if he has anything or could make you something.
Hi Gary, how did you get the copper to bend so easily? i couldnt really understand it when you said it in the video :/
also; what was the diameter of circles of copper you used?
really love the video's man!
Heat it to dull red then quench in water. Not sure what diameter, download the pattern and play about with it.
@garyhuston oh well darnit,im sure anything you come up with will be awesome.maybe just makea video of you describing all of the fields you worked in,and ask for ideas, maybe some of us other baby smiths will have some suggestions
If you make it right you don't see the bolt!
@garyhuston id like to see a hand forged axe or some sort of small tool.i think youd manage to make a nice tomahawk out of a railroad spike : )
I really enjoyed this. Can you tell me what tool you used to punch the holes?
Cathy Haynes I marked them with an automatic center punch then just drilled them!
Thanks!
Just use an awl.

@MrJsowa Thanks, but I'm running out of ideas!
I used a band saw to cut mine.
What guage of copper sheet should I purchase?
It doesn’t really matter, I used scrap from a water cylinder so don’t know exactly what it was but you don’t want it too thick.
what gauge copper plate would you say works best for this?
8mm would be 3/8?
can you make a gold pan?
No, why?
they are worth allot for some reason.
francisco rodriguez
Can't understand why! they are just a big tin plate!
they are like the old school version of the current green plastic pan and people like the feeling of using what the old timers used. and they are sort of complex there is a lip at the base of the pan so heavy materials can escape and wide part of the pan has to be set at a certain angle so you can flush water inside so the light material washes away and if you ad two or three riffle on the wide part it would ad at least an extra 50$ because all copper pans have the wide part flat.If you look at current pans and then look at the copper pan you will see the difference in the design and texture of the wide part.thats why they are worth a little extra people just want a taste of the past.
francisco rodriguez
Wow! more to it than one would imagine!
No call for them in this country as we don't have any gold!
Mega rapido :)
Gary....there is no way to post a pic on here..but I have made similar type rose with light gauge steel...I mounted three of them on a stem...one forge tight as a bud..one partially opened ad one fully opened!...If you would like to see a pic of it you can Email me at...tsmith14@xplornet.ca...and I would be happy to send you a pic and brief description on how I formed the rose.
I worked as a Blacksmith for thirty plus years..retired now but still do work at home for the pleasure of it.Have always loved the trade!
Seen better..
Lucky you!
