Me thinks that August “ looses” at rock/paper/scissors to take the most dangerous tree= cuz he firmly believes / knows that he can do it, and won’t put his crew in a situation where they are more vulnerable than he is. What a Man to work with! Never had such a great guy boss in my sixty years of employment. You definitely have a good one Damien!
Right? First time I have ever seen August lose. He knows Damien always goes rock. This is what honor looks like in the modern world, for those that think it extinct.
Shame on property owner for letting the trees go so long. Idiot for demanding how the take down goes. Hope you charged him accordingly for your superior knowledge and expertise!
August...My youngest son is a climber that helps us old guys (75+) take down trees for people in church and then we cut and split the wood for people that can't afford firewood for primary heating. He has walked away from dead hardwoods people wanted removed with "Dad, don't ever get me involved in rotten shit again!" He'll just tell the owner he can drop it for $450 and do as little damage as possible or they can pay $5,000 and get a crane and bucket truck to get it. He's seen too many of his friends permanently disabled climbing rotten trees no matter how safe they try to be. Please stay safe! And have a Merry Christmas & a Safe, Healthy, Blessed and Happy 2024!
Oh man well done. I actually speared out a poplar top today on a job where I needed it to hit a narrow drop zone. I misjudged the cut, pushed through the cut too fast and the top came back and clobbered me on the way down. Thought it broke my shoulder at first, ended up just hurting my pride. Stay safe friends! Doesn’t matter how many thousand trees you your in it only takes one bad move.
Yeah, I did the same thing a while back and before my friend/groundsmen asked if I was OK I heard him in my helmet say that’s what hardhat are for buddy.😂
Yeah dude so glad you're okay! Slash cuts are sooooo fast and versatile when they work so no matter how many times I screw them up I'll always come back hahaha
"Why does part of me enjoy this". Man, truer words could not have been said. I hope you're having as much fun as we have watching it. My take: you enjoy it cause you know you have the guts to do something many others wouldn't.
You guys are real pros with the way you handled that client. When i get those questions from the ground while im in a harry situation, it just sets me off. Way to stay cool.
With nothing but sincerity I say thank you for posting these difficult tree removals because without the possessed knowledge of the hive mind all we can learn from are our individual experiences, which leads to more deaths and serious injuries.
I’ve seen you do some nasty trees over the years and you’ve never vocalized the hazard like you did in this one. This is the definition of a bad tree. Solid work fellas 👌
At least yours had limbs on it , last rotten pine I did no limbs 8 inches of rotten wood then core was the onlypart that was strong enough to hold the tree up . Got 6 feet up the tree gaffs dug in and went to sliding to the ground , absolutely nothing I could do to climb it . Great job guys be safe and have a blessed merry Christmas
Cool to hear that you use the "safety carabiner trick" I am using myself and was always wondering if thats a good method... my little carabiner has a breaking strength of 4 kilonewton compared to 22 kn of a regular carabiner. And: If there is a chance of taking a big swing including a few yards drop I use a strechable rock climbing rope that would dampen the fall.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 - And thanx for your always inspiring videos!!!👏🏻👏🏻
Ya know, in the MILITARY we got *HAZARDOUS DUTY PAY* and you PROS get customer "expectations" on something that should have come down many YEARS AGO! *HELLO* ! Well that's a great job you guys but I'm not happy seeing you in harm's way. GLAD you both were in that mess as support of one another! WOW! Thanks!
If the customer didn't want the other trees hurt? And them trees were that bad. I would have told him we have to get a lift or 'm going to hurt your trees. I've been climbing for a long time. I would have been nervous climbing those trees. I don't think I would have August Damian. You guys are great at what you do I will give you that amazing work stay safe we need you guys.
Well, I would have sh*tted myself in those trees... Be safe and don't take to many risks, we do wanna continue seeing your video's. Have a nice end of the year
It never ceases to amaze me how long a client will let a tree rot/ fall apart before they decide to have it removed. I've told more than one- if you hadn't waited so long, that tree/ bush might have survived!😂😅
@@AugustHunicke haha thats good then. Glad you put it on film though. Its so nice to see experienced pros go through this as well, because it forces to stay focussed and listen to your gut feeling. Glad you got those nasty things down!
Watching at roughly 26:00 I think that the one thing you said you "forgot about" was to make sure that your zigzag attachment carabiner is not sideloaded and jammed in the zigzag swivel. When Rope Wrench is clipped to a main carabiner - it tries to twist it every time. Even without it when using zigzag in MRS setup it happens to me sometimes when safety line is horizontal, so I always check it when I clip in and after I tend slack.. On sketchy trees like that - I'd check more often just to make sure that if a swing will happen, every bit of luck will be on my side. Stay safe:)
What was on my mind watching from his hemet's top is this : unlike what muscle memory say, that is that usually once your saw is below your hips you don't have to worry about it dancing around, you that day have your life line under your hips, and you still got to worry about your saw... Sorry for the phrasing, english isn't my mother language. Happy ending, but a big part of me say the risk hadn't to be taken. Fell the dead tree, damages to neighbourhood would have been the same that if mother nature was left alone and often dead trees damage their neighbours and it's part of the natural struggle. If the owner of the land can't accept it, refuse the job. Let nature sort it out...
Thank you that was a good video. Merry Christmas to both of you and your families.August if you go paper I'll bet you'll win more against the champion Damian 😉
I've always thought about fashioning some rubber bands as a weak link in the system on those type of scenarios. Similar to those resistance bands on exercise equipment
Wee note for Sam (? Hope I've got that right) at the end, who is doing a perfectly excellent job (& I want to somehow say this quietly): Either you wholly commit to a totally extravagant character like Pee Wee Herman, or some of the characters that Robin Wiliams and Jim Carey play. Total commitment. Just let go and fly. Otherwise, the general rule in acting for camera, voice work and selling is "less is more". Undersell and it somehow comes across stronger on tape. Hope this lands right. It's well meant. Best wishes to you and yours. And the saddles are stunning. 🙏🏻
Hey August! I figured you would've won rock paper scissors in one of the rounds... I was betting on you in both- o well, just keep going scissors-like you said eventually it'll have to win 😂. O and the last question by the customer-"can you cut those rotting stumps down closer to the dirt?"🙄 which right after he says he'll cut them even lower with his saw-why even ask then? Great work August! And Damien too! And Sam!
Client :I don't want to hurt the other trees around these trees that I waited knowing they should've been cut 4 years ago, and to top it off, hey can you cut those rotten dirt chain dull crap stumps lower while you at it lol. That client is lucky to have you guys, is all I can say. We get those here once in a while and I have to bring them down to earth unless they have an endless budget for the removal. Good job guys.
Awesome Video guys! Genuine question: August's life line for most of the video goes right in front of Damien over his lanyard. If the tree were to fail and August were to take a massive swing, wouldn't he pull Damien with him and yank him out of tree and chance both climbers get hurt/ the second tree fails through the impact? Thanks for explaining!
Put that little carabiner in your break test machine. DMM rates that XSRE carabiner at 4kN (900 lbs), but what if it’s actually much stronger? There is a big difference between hoping it breaks and knowing it will break if the tree fails!
Can u do this?, can u do this? I’ve seen these guys a bunch surprised he payed ya. Didn’t seem grateful that u risked your life to save some limbs dude has mason vibes I hope u charged him a lot August Not sure about your insurance policy but your kids need ya. Mad respect for your skills and stoked on the way you 2 work together!
Is there a reason you don't, set your angle, bring powerhead down (to cut approx maybe 1/3rd potential peel wood) then bring powerhead back to finish the slice?
August is so funny, he said. It's good time to have this breakaway link on my flip line. But it's a little creepy looking at it. L o l god bless guys you do amazing atay safe happy holidays

As a property owner could not ask someone to climb a dead tree like that .I just bucked out half of of one that came down in wind storm the bu butt end drove 3 feet in ground. I'm all for letting nature run its corse . Stay safe.
I used an underpowered saw to do a slice cut once... saw bogged, watched as the top sat and then started rotating on my bar, thought to myself, 'this is probably not gonna be good' lol... good news is: I was only knocked out for 10 seconds, and longer description short, no 'permanent' damage (other than a 'reminder' 'bump' on a rib). My partner would beg to differ, as regards my mental state lol Personally, I think I was more compromised in that regard Beforehand, that the whooping I got was a good 'Fix' hahahaha
