And to think this technology probably started with the Nielsen TV box. I went down a rabbit hole of learning just before doing this video and pretty much found out if you own a device that connects to the Internet, it's probably collecting data.
At least they are up front and telling you they are using/collecting/selling your data, LOL. Guarantee all the others are too, they just don’t make it obvious.
i sigtned up for this originaly in may of 2023 i still have yet to get one but i am curious if it can be used as a computer screen everyething i watch is on my computer all of my shows and stuff and like 90% of its youtube
It has 3 HDMI ports. The top screen appears to be pretty exceptional as far as quality and clarity. I like the idea of the bottom screen configured as an information screen. And I'll also add that the sound bar is pretty good. The added screen makes the TV's physical aspect tall, keep that in mind. But overall, I like it. It's free, so you're not out much and can always send it back. As far as collecting your viewing analytics, even a cheap Walmart TV will do that. What makes Telly different is the ads on the bottom screen, for some this may be annoying.
@@MeatbrickProductions alredy signed up for it back when it was first announced in 2023 no plans to retract my reservation now the whole reason i signed up is becuase i cant even afford a cheap tv i am on SSI once i have paid rent bills for food and household supplyues i have maybe 2$ left to spare every month
@TwilightVaramek i signed up long ago too and got a text saying to complete my profile to send my order. So we shall see. Says I'll receive an email when it ships out I think.
55" TVs are so cheap now yet that secondary wide aspect ratio screen and soundbar are likely expensive. I can't possibly see this working out for them, making hundreds of dollars in ads per person is going to take a long time yet by the time that cost is recovered 55" TVs will be a fraction of what they cost even today. This isn't going to age well. As a commercial product where the secondary display is used for a different purpose I could see this working, but that's likely not a big enough market for them.
do I physically own the tv? am I allowed to break it if I want? just make a cover for the bottom screen or electronically disconnect it and do the same for the motion sensor. keep the camera covered at all times
That is a good question. I guess it's like a free lease? Digging through the FAQs, I found this... "What is the process for return if a user wants to opt out or upgrade and on that is there a base timeline for inclusion (If after receipt someone opts out tomorrow versus 6 mos from now versus 2 years from now as they want a newer or bigger tv) As an early adopting household that has agreed to help us improve Telly for the millions of Americans who will receive the biggest innovation in TV since color in the years to come, we are grateful for beta program members' partnership. Should anyone wish to return your Telly at any time during the public beta program they may do so in compliance with our terms and conditions."
If the TV will work with all the sensors disabled, then hey, free TV! The ads probably won't even work in my house, so I'm not even worried about that. Of course, a crude cover can be made with some black construction paper and electrical tape, if need be.
The tv is asking for permission to watch most moves you make. That’s fine if we agree. My issue is how good is their security. They want our info to sell to other companies to try to entice us to buy products. What if they got hacked and the bad guys was watching right along beside them and they didn’t know it? Do they have any claims of top of the line security, encryption servers or cameras? Telly is being somewhat honest but what a disaster if they got hacked and we had weird-oh’s tracking us.
@@alexdrockhound9497 lol I'd pay NOT to own their TV then if I had to. Fortunately it's free to say no. The best thing is a dumb TV with nothing in it but ports
Just to clarify this comment, the app is used to register Telly, modify widgets and set up your profile. By default after installing the app, all permissions are disabled including location tracking with the exception of camera use. I assume this is for barcode scanning. This is my experience, with an Android phone. Google on the other hand, is tracking android phones and collecting analytics.
I assume it just goes through wifi instead of cell data, so you could probably just get an old used phone to set it up, then throw it in a drawer somewhere.
You can find out more about this TV here: www.telly.com
How's the picture quality with hdr is it really dim?
Should be fairly easy to 3d print a cover for that for that ad window.
Black duct tape. 30 seconds
They'll put sensors to prevent that
@@Pawer8don’t underestimate people. Simply don’t cover the sensor.
@@Famouslastplacepretty sure they are in the screen it’s self
In a dystopian future, the newer versions of these have larger advertising screens, and the main screen shrinks.
We deserve this.
Can a DNS blocker like pihole block the ads on the bottom screen? And can you reconfigure the bottom screen to display somethings else?
I really dont like the precedent this creates. Very 1984.

The device you're watching this video from does all of this already, and you carry it around all day.
What happens if the tv isn't connected to the internet?
When you confirm all details, it says you must connect it to internet within 5 days of receiving it. I just got my confirmation so I'll get my tv soon

do you actually own the TV or is this like a lease? When you cancelled older satellite service you had to return the "box"

I would not want that tv for free
Minus the commercial on the lower screen, I would willingly pay for one if the price was within reason. The hardware is pretty amazing!
I'm totally hacking this sucker with Raspberry Pi 400. Obviously I'm the product here so nope on the connectivity part.
they make you sign a contract. if they dont receive telemetry from your device that violates your contract and they will charge you a lot of money.
