This the most heart wrenching thing I’ve seen in a long time. When she called for her baby to a silent cold ocean and no response came back. She even got back in the water to look for her baby knowing she could be eaten. It is a mother’s love and a mother’s pain.
Its probably not the first time she's lost a baby to a predator. This happens all the time in nature. But she'll go back into heat very quickly now that her baby is gone and she'll forget. All mammals are protective of their young. But they also forget them very quickly once they are gone.
You got to separate the mammalian attachment and look at it from the practical side of the situation. I mean it is sad but our own species die and suffer ever single day and very much in the same vein, might I add. Natural selection hasn’t stopped. It just took on a new guise and name. S

She will call until her voice gives out. Just like this Mother will. Heartbreaking. All Mothers should be outraged.
+Keel Willyams She was calling for it, not crying for it. Don't make the mistake of planting human emotions on an animal. Think of it from their perspective, not ours. She was giving the call that all otter mothers make when their cub is out of sight. She will call in vain for a while, then give up, go back into estrus and breed again. Life goes on.
And what was horrible about an Orca feeding itself so it did'nt starve to death? It may have been a mother Orca that needed sustaninice to make milk for it's baby, nothing horrible about it. It does suck for the Otter and it's mother but it's not horrible just lunch.
Idk why so many people are upset that they "took the situation lightly:" The fuck do you want them to do? Take the otter to counseling? I thought it was nice that they saved the mother.

Josh Powell I just wish the baby made it too. ------------- NATURE IS NOT NOR HAS IT EVER. BEEN A FREAKING DISNEY MOViE..... Nature can and often is cruel. See your face in the mirror and you will know what I'm talking about.
Animals do feel grief... It just depends on if they are in survival mode or not as to what they do in that moment. My Siamese cat lived to be 21 years old... and would've probably lived another 4 years easily, at least... maybe more... but his 'wife' was given away when I was in the military, or ran away, or was killed... never got the full story on that one and what little I was told ( given away ) was probably a lie. Never got an e-mail address or anything to check up... Anyways, the son, who was only 14 which was the one we kept, the others we gave to good homes.. ended up with a clot in his back either from jumping and hitting his back while we were getting groceries, or a clot simply developed / moved and blocked an artery... His entire rear was numb and cold. The vet said he wasn't in any pain so we didn't put him to sleep. Vet said he would die within a few days and there was nothing which could be done. He lasted 2 days and we did everything for him and never left him alone. Gave him the best food and anything he wanted. Let him lay outside in sun and kept him company. After he died, we had him cremated. but the father outlived his son, and maybe the wife?? not sure on that.. and I think one of the others died too... but he was there with his son. After his son died, he kept his body company for about 12+ hours until we had him picked up to be cremated. After that, he fell into a deep depression and didn't want to do anything anymore. He was grieving his son and he was just so sad. This was an outdoor cat for his entire 21 years and he knew to avoid cars. Never did anything to endanger his life in regards to machinery. He lived in several countries during his life. United States x2 properties, Canada, and Germany x2 properties. Always on a good diet, always cared for... was an amazing lap kitty too. He would sit like a human and meow when he wanted something. Incredibly intelligent. He committed suicide shortly after his son died by laying under my step-fathers car tire. Something he has never done in the past ( the under the car tire... obviously... ) as he only visited from time to time. He visited while I was at school and left before I came back... He died pretty quickly apparently. Not sure if this is the truth either. But, everyone around him was dying... outliving his son by 7 years is quite a lot, especially in cat years. He was alone aside from us. Even though we tried everything to be there for him; he was just depressed and was tired. I completely understand. I highly doubt it was an accident simply because of how intelligent he was, the fact he lived in multiple countries and was always an outdoor cat and always came home without ever having an issue. Many animals show emotion, personality, etc.. they grieve.. if a child is in danger they rush to their assistance. Animals will also rescue other animals so they understand when another is in trouble and needs help, help that they can provide and they do... so they can empathize. There are common ancestors which did have emotions - so it is highly unlikely it is purely learned behavior from just watching humans.
Also, I think the mama looking at the boater and then back towards where they came from... I think she wanted the person to turn around and go back in case the baby survived. She didn't want to leave the area until all hope was lost.... that is likely what she was trying to get across. Also, sound does carry over water so she was probably trying to direct her baby towards them... a dual purpose message... The human may have seen the baby get eaten, but she may not have....
Thank you so much for a beautiful job of filming, it warms the heart to see such things on video. You were so gentle with the poor otter and I was glad to see she could be so tame.
That is so good n so sad all n one . I hope she has more babies to replace the one she lost. Those wailings make your heart ache. Filled with pain n desperation n her voice.

I had seen a documentary someplace on RUclips explaining how we got the name "Killer Whale." It was quite interesting. "Killer Whale" is supposed to be "Whale Killer" because of the Spanish it came from (I can't remember the phrase, though). Thought I would just pass it along.
Wikipedia: "According to some authors, the name killer whale is a mistranslation of the 18th century Spanish name asesina-ballenas which means literally whale killer.[16] Basque whalers would have given it such name after observing pods of orcas hunting baleen whales."
The killer whale isn't a whale. It's the world's largest dolphin species. That may explain why you see them swimming around boats a lot.Talk about these guys being in the right place at the right time. They seem to like the taste of a great white once in a while.

Thanx for saving her..!!

Poor mother otter crying out to her baby. I am glad she was smart enough to get on the boat! :(
Would have been better if the pup made it to the boat, too.
The pup was already lost & eaten before mom found the boat
.
I think they both were but the baby was to short to paddel away and i think she thought the pup was on the other side untill she cryed
Wow that was amazing footage! I really feel for the mother otter, but she was very lucky to be alive. And good job to the guy who helped out that sea otter. Just be very careful when u interfere with a killer whale and it's pray!

At 3:29 after he said ur ok she looks at him like how would u know, have u ever had ur baby eaten by an orca?!

Josh Powell I just wish the baby made it too. ------------- NATURE IS NOT NOR HAS IT EVER. BEEN A FREAKING DISNEY MOViE..... Nature can and often is cruel. See your face in the mirror and you will know what I'm talking about.
That broke my heart...thank you guys for what you did to help her!
She was calling to her baby in case it was alive, not crying from loss. Humanizing them means you could misunderstand them.
Animals can experience grief. We aren't all that different from animals.
StrawbunnyMilk Oh I am sure some do. Most use sound to call out to warn or direct.
@@Acecool i would have needed to see him lay under tire to believe that one, sounds like u cared about the cats more than they did

+Paul Avery - That is exactly what I heard/interpreted at the end. A mother literally wailing in anguish over the fear that she has lost her child. I don't know how anyone can interpret it any differently.
Wakinyan- where did you hear that they only have one litter in their lifetime? It seems like that state-of-affairs would pretty much optimize for the extinction of that species. Given evolutionary theory, how could this possibly be the case?

I don’t understand why people suddenly are hating on Orcas for this
Not be rude or anything but nature is a system- prey and predator.. with out prey the predators wouldn’t have any food and they could die and with out predators the prey population would over grow and the system would be unbalanced
If you hate orcas because they killed on otter well you should hate the human kind as well-

I had to stop the video once Mama started crying 😢. So sad. Good job helping her out. All part of nature’s plan.

I had seen a documentary someplace on RUclips explaining how we got the name "Killer Whale." It was quite interesting. "Killer Whale" is supposed to be "Whale Killer" because of the Spanish it came from (I can't remember the phrase, though). Thought I would just pass it along.
Wikipedia: "According to some authors, the name killer whale is a mistranslation of the 18th century Spanish name asesina-ballenas which means literally whale killer.[16] Basque whalers would have given it such name after observing pods of orcas hunting baleen whales."
they go after Hump backs and Greys and Fin whales too
Philip Royd Thx! Learning something new every day.
The killer whale isn't a whale. It's the world's largest dolphin species. That may explain why you see them swimming around boats a lot.Talk about these guys being in the right place at the right time. They seem to like the taste of a great white once in a while.

Dude, trying to pet her may have driven her back into the water!
Say he couldn't resist, especially with it crying.
But they were prob far enough away from the whales, plus it had to get back in sometime.
She was already leaving the boat, trying to pet her wouldn’t change since she did not react as if she were ofensive
She’s whale food. Not that moment but hours or days or weeks later. Prey rarely ever live to life expectancy or at least not in the sense that we know. In captivity they may outlast us, just a wild guess.
91lifetime23 right, she was already leaving and she wasn’t going to stay on the boat forever. She was out of danger so it was time to go and see if her baby was around.
This video is one of very few videos that makes me emotional. I got tears, and it is very rare for me to get tears by merely watching a short clip (i have been thinking that my emotional feelings were gone already for ~5 years, but it is not true after all)

What an amazing thing to witness!
My daughter and I just watched it. I was worried she'd get too upset (she's got a lot of sympathy for others, a trait inherited from her mom and grandma) and start bawling her eyes out as she has for other videos.
In the end, she was calling her puppy. She did not know he was devoured (if it really was)
