It does help if you know what they are singing about though..... This is at a wedding - the blond woman has just been forced by the old guy (her brother) to marry someone she doesnt love. (the young bearded guy). Her real lover (Pavarotti) suddenly appears and denounces her. The black woman is her friend and the young slim guy is the priest. The action stops and they all sing about how they are feeling. It's awesome. :)

I have such fond memories of hearing June Anderson in great bel canto operas in the 1990's.... I Purtani, Lucia, Donna del Lago, etc. Her unique plangent timber soared above the tuttis like nothing I have heard today.

Shirley Verrett's slightly husky but rich voice adds worlds to the tone color of this sextet.

My wife and I were privileged to have Shirley and her husband (Lou LaMonica) as dinner guests in our home some years ago. (About 25 or 30.) A wonderful once-in-a-lifetime event. She was totally charming and funny, as you'd expect. A cherished memory.

I also think of "the boys" with this piece, but between goofball live acts, and Bugs Bunny cartoons, a whole LOT of kids got introduced to major classical music that might have otherwise been overlooked. My mom used to have her Caruso records playing all the time when we would come home from grade school, and I developed a LOVE for Italian Opera that I relish today. I don't know what they are singing about, but the music is SO huge and complex, the voices so grand...nothing today comes close.

Chi mi frena il mio furore
E la man che al brando corse?
    Della misera in favore
Nel mio petto un grido sorse!
    E' mio sangue! l'ho tradita,
Ella sta fra morte e vita...
    Ahi! che spegnere non posso
    I rimorsi del mio cor.)
(Io sperai che a me la vita
    Tronca avesse il mio spavento...
    Ma la morte non m'aita...
    Vivo ancor per mio tormento!
Da' miei lumi cadde il velo,
Mi tradì la terra e il cielo!
    Vorrei pianger, ma non posso...
    M'abbandona il pianto ancor!)
    (Qual terribile momento!
    Più formar non so parole...
    Densa nube di spavento
Par che copra i rai del sole!
    Come rosa inaridita
Ella sta fra morte e vita...
Chi per lei non è commosso
Ha di tigre in petto il cor.)

He avoids that guy's hand b/c he's obviously not done applauding that June cuteness :-).
I love Pavi but in all on-stage performances w/other men he does his darnedest to put their voice in the shade, haha. But I still love him SO much... he makes me not eb afraid of dying- I hope it'll be possible to meet him on the flip side.

The guy's name is Piero Cappuccilli, one of the best baritones ever! Yes, the gesture of Pavarotti is quite unhappy, but maybe due to the ( stupid) italian habit to applaud for themselves on stage. Anyway, a great performance, everybody is magnificiant!

She did the role of Pat Nixon in Paris Opera's production of Nixon in China last year. It was her debut in the role and she was very well received. The production also included Sumi Jo and Madame Mao. These "old pro" ladies both did very well by all accounts.

thanks jose. :) I dont know if its the ONLY way but yes theres no doubt it enhances the experience.
People who dont speak the language of a particular opera may not know this, but most opera DVDs have subtitles - and most live performances have a screen with the English translation. And opera CDs usually come with booklets where you can follow the plot in up to 4 different languages! So if you love the music, go on - get the full experience. :)

Yes, you are right. Maybe I exagerated when I said this was the ONLY way to enjoy it. At least I can say I have learned a lot everytime I buy a new opera CD with the booklet, so I can read the words. I can give you many examples, like the tragedy of Canio in Pagliacci, or the touching Vissi d'arte of the second act of Tosca, or the beautiful Di provenza il mare, il suol of La Traviata. Thank you for your reply. Greetings from Mexico.

I know it sounds wrong, but it's actually in the score on both occasions for the drums to come on the downbeat the bar before you're used to hearing them. I also thought that this was a mistake until I heard at least a couple of other recordings with the same thing.

  • @Agorante
    @Agorante 16 лет назад +1

Huh? I heard Pavarotti and Cappuccilli live at Paris Opera about the time this video was made. I well remember the easy size of Cappuccilli's voice but not Pavarotti's. Pavarotti didn't have a monster size voice like Atlantov, or King, or Corelli. It was plenty big enough for his appropriate repertoire but nothing special. He was a quality not quantity singer.
