Garrett, thank you for explaining the cotton and why not on the bottom! appreciate the explanation. Hey Ruth (Tar Girl) great job on the videos, watching from the beginning you can see how you have grown on the filming, and editing. Great job! Thank you both for sharing your story!
Cotton caulking, tarring, and gun caulking seem like such tedious chores but I'll bet it leaves you with a very self-satisfied feeling when it's done. On the other hand, applying the primer must feel like instant gratification.
I have just binge watched your entire series after SV Seeker sent me your way. I never thought that I would be watching videos about sailboat building. I have really enjoyed your videos, the voice over, narration & questions are all excellent. Keep up the good work & stay safe!
Having caulked thousands of tubes, a top tip with a simple hand gun in cool temps is , put plastic tubes in hot water. ( not silicone as it is always soft) Stuff will flow out. With a narrow scraper, you will not have the caulking all over the planks either. You can put your scrapings into a seam. A piece of wet wood, the width of a chisel lets you scrape seams and then deposit excess into another seam, without it sticking to the tools. Wood , shaped and steeped in water is the best tool for working sealants.
Haha, I'm a shipwright and marine diesel mechanic, I'm only 35 but I've been doing "hands on" work since I was like 12, I have multiple sclerosis now too, so my aches have developed their own pains ;-) There is nothing like that feeling you get when you discover that tool that you reeeally need has already been invented. You feel like you just pulled the sword from the stone, and you just want to hold it up like an 80's metal band album cover, and laugh your barbarian laugh! Great job guys, keep it up! Wooden boats get a bad rep maintenance wise, but that's cause the Yachties are afraid of the tar, you guys will do just fine ;-)
New sub here and have just binged your entire channel in the last day or so. Very impressed with your project! Oh to be 40 years younger. Looking forward to seeing you both and Rediviva on the water soon.
When you finish applying your pitch , You acquire a basting syringe pull the tar in the syringe squeeze tar in joint sweep with brush for cleanup for better application.
Reminds me how, as shipwright apprentice in 1955, I'd roll hemp on my knee. It once broke and I tied the loose ends!! My instructor was not very happy. Then the smell of the hot tar as we poured it on! Glad your both better
I'm paraphrasing what I believe is a quote by Bernard Moitessier, "that a boat will take everything you got to build...and then a little more." It's the most difficult AND rewarding thing I've ever done. And I'm not done yet.... Keep going guys. She'll be in the water soon enough and you'll have a whole life together with her. Pretty cool! Nothing else like that boat in the whole world. Like it has a soul😉 Cheers.
The boat is looking great and you are making great progress. Thank you for taking the time to update us. Hope the rib problem has healed up OK and we have both the team at 100%.
Two partial days of powerwatching your adventures. I knew it would lead to waiting for the next upload. Extremely enjoyable build. thanks for the great videos and thanks for allowing us into your world.
You guys are awesome when I found you on RUclips I binge watched all your videos which was awesome love your videos but then I reached the end and waiting for your next video is excruciating waiting. You guys are making one beautiful sailboat. Keep up the hard work on making these awesome videos thank you. Back to waiting for your next video😜. Thank you Karl.
'Love your trip.....you make a great couple and creating this windship gives the best introduction possible to maintain and repair her. In my experience there's nothing like a wooden boat to live in. Infinite Blessings
Binge watched your entire series over the past few days and really enjoyed it. I came to your channel for the boat build, which is awesome, and you look to be doing an excellent job. Not to take anything away from the build, but my favorite aspect of your channel is the two of you. You guys have a beautiful relationship--the way you treat each other (not to mention those around you) is a real pleasure to see. Folks like you are very easy to root for. Good luck to you both, and thanks for the inspiration.
Welcome Back! Not that you really went anywhere lol, but glad to see you guys up and going again. Good to see you Ruth feeling better. Hope Garrett gets well, ribs are no fun and neither is coughing that hard either. He is quite the trooper. You both are!!! Thank you for sharing this amazing journey with all of us, you have no idea how inspiring you are. If life plays out how we would like, my family and I may leave our home here in Alaska and have our own sailing adventure. Keep chasing your dreams, after 36 years I finally allowed myself to dream. Can't believe I took so long. Peace and Blessings!
You can make your own linseed oil putty. Great to see and inspiring to see dedicated a couple. Good to see Emerald Steel chime in as well. Keep on Sailing.
I've been away for a bit and now checking in, so awesome to see how far you've gotten. you guys rock. can't wait to see paint. lol you are turning a landlubber astray
Just got all caught up start to finish in less than a week. Amazing job! I can't donate money but I have plenty of time. As a navy veteran I have plenty of appreciation for salt and hard work. I live in Mountain View and would like to donate time and a strong back to help out with anything not mater how monotonous or menial such as moving lumber around or sanding, staining, finishing. I've got decent wood working skills and a big truck. Thank you for sharing this experience with the world.
Love your Vlogs. So interesting and informative. I also am learning. This is how education should be. Take the maths equations at school. Most are just learnt formulas that are not really applied to anything. Making educational films would make them so much easier and enjoyable to learn
Couldn't agree more. You know Garrett was the kid in school who "wasn't good at math" but look at what he's accomplished! Applied applicable knowledge R
Glad to see you both back at it again. Good to see you're feeling better Ruth! Sounds like you guys are right under an airport there. I wouldn't get anything done, I'd be looking up all the time!
Brilliant job you two. Just caught up to your latest episode. Have watched them all down here in Melbourne Australia, fantastic what you are doing together. Not sure what to watch each night now until your next episode. Keep up the great work, building, filming and editing that is. ⛵️
Boy, you two are much further along than I expected! I think it would take awhile to learn how to use that mallet....plus Garrett must have arm muscles that do not get tired....mine would quickly collapse. Seems this lower altitude you're at now is messing your bodies up....hope they soon acclimate to this new pressure ;). Salandtar is looking great....you two stay healthy!
Ruth and Garrett another great video. I wish they were longer!! Garret is a lucky man to have such a beautiful wife that works alongside him. Looking forward to the next one. Take care 👍⚓️🔨
Exelent video! Entertaining and very informative. Thank you very much for sharing. I can't begin to express how much this means to me. If you keep up with this type of stuff you could probably re edit and make a sellable video series. Thanks again. Looking forward to the next one. 😎
Awesome. Louis is awesome from Tips from a shipwright. Ive met him a couple of times now. I go to a wooden boatbuilding and restoration school in RI. PL should do pretty well as seam compound. As long as you paint the hull really well. Not sure how it will react to the UV rays from the sun and the reflection of the water, and the salt water, but it should work well. Also, the technical name for priming the seams is called "paying" the seams. Dont know why, but it is. Thanks for the awesome content! Hopefully you guys make it to the east coast so you can check out what we have for wooden boat stuff going on!
Garret: On your planking choice. Old Doug Fir is a hard wood, ( but a soft wood species ) and the fact that you re-used old growth quarter saw makes it even better. It does not have natural resins of other wood so it will need help with applied oils, the tar, green wood preservative, etc. If you have to be on the hard for long time, take the opportunity to reapply them so it soaks into the dry wood. My Alaskan 49 Motor Yacht is one of the last built wooden boats from American Marine in 1973. And you can still smell the tar and preservative in the engine room. Minimal rot with exception of the 1970's plywood in the house and bulwark above the true teak deck ( 1 1/8 lap plank ) Try to design in a sea chest ( with a screw on gasketed clear plastic cover, for inspection ); so you can service your salt water inlets while in the water, with only one thru hull (plastic bags, etc). Ruth: Great job on the video's. Looking foreword to following the build now you're at the half way point. the old guy at 77 Bert
Bert thats an interesting point . Not sure if they plan on living on this boat but the prolonged exposure may not be a good thing for there health. There young and the old effects 20 years from now applies to them.
I love this channel...... You both amaze me, wih this beautiful boat build project.... Thos caulking tools look medieval, and probable look the same when square riggers were sailing the high seas :)
You have done an awesome job on the boat. Keep up the good work. Just a tip about caulking, take some pliers and squeeze the end of the calking tube to match the groove of the seams. This will ensure the calk gets to all the spots.
Not a bad idea. Never thought about crimping the end. After running a bead we'd go over it with a putty knife pushing it into the seam and then once more just to clear the excess. ~R
You should have a splash party and ask for donations for your cruising kitty. I am only a few miles away and would be happy to bring beer and food. Love your vids. I am trying to restore a Westsail 32 and I thought that was hard until I came across your channel. Cheers, keep up the good work, and videos.
haha plan on it! I think we'll post an update video when we have a date set :) If you're so close come swing by! As long as it's not raining Garrett's usually there and depending on work I'm close by Cheers Vortex ~R
Should call Lou to come help ya. He would probably be a hoot to work with too. Very smart man even if he looks like Popeyes dad! Lol. Good job mates! Prayers from your Texan fan for your health through the project (the both of you and your fur baby)!!
I’ve been in a carpenter for 30 years. That PL Polyurethane is the best paintable exterior caulk available at Home Depot next to 5200. I haven’t used much 5200 so I can’t say it’s better but I can tell you that PL will last 10 years easily unpainted on a House.
Correction: we didn't use 5200 because, yes, it's a glue but it is flexible we just didn't want to glue the planks together. Garrett was late to the comment answering party haha :)R
It's amazing 2018 And the wood boat technically hasn't changed 200 hand caulk is still the by go to . And the talk about dreaming about doing it yourself and fulfilling it. That's got to satisfieing. And is bathrooms or window by caulk .the only fairly new technology. Cool.

New sub here and have just binged your entire channel in the last day or so. Very impressed with your project! Oh to be 40 years younger. Looking forward to seeing you both and Rediviva on the water soon.
I’m a big fan of boats and guys who can build things with their hands/tools - thanks for sharing your boat building with us.
I would have thought hemp would have been the go to caulking media for this job.
It was, Phil, but I guess price is a key player .
I’m so happy to see you back again. I hope you are both well and that Ruth is back to full strength. Really missed you guys.
I have to admit, I have never heard a lady say "What a nice bucket of tar!"
I'm paraphrasing what I believe is a quote by Bernard Moitessier, "that a boat will take everything you got to build...and then a little more." Good to see you back and well - another big step forward - stay proud and stay strong!
I just saw Garrett walk by me in a restaurant while I was on vacation. What a trip after watching these videos. So celebrity now
thx for explaining so much and very detailed!
Addictive...easier when I was able to binge...now waiting for them is the hardest part :-)
Great job, guys! Good to see you up and about, Ruth😊😊
The boat is looking great and you are making great progress. Thank you for taking the time to update us. Hope the rib problem has healed up OK and we have both the team at 100%.
if you run out of caulk, sub in the dreads ! can't wait to see the launch !
Two partial days of powerwatching your adventures. I knew it would lead to waiting for the next upload. Extremely enjoyable build. thanks for the great videos and thanks for allowing us into your world.
I've been watching from the start, and I assumed that Ruth was Salt, and Garret was Tar, but now I see it's the other way around!
Good to see you guys again
once again a very interesting video, cant wait to see this boat finished and sailing the seas... keep up the great work..
You guys are awesome when I found you on RUclips I binge watched all your videos which was awesome love your videos but then I reached the end and waiting for your next video is excruciating waiting.

Doing an amazing job guys. Keep up the good work
It's nice to see some traditional wood boat building skills still being used,
Great to see you back. I was just thinking the day before about your build. It’s looking great.
Great work guys!

I have watched Tips from a Shipwright... you have learned well
Love your videos.
YOu need tofloat that boat and make your way to Aus, and join the Sydney to hobart race. I would love to see this in person. Great job peeps

Thank you for sharing your experience. Don’t get caulky 🤠
ah ah ha! I see what you did there ;)

What a champ to be caulking with cracked ribs! Hope you can get on the water soon :)

You guys are amazing, determined and steadfast. Qualities I lack, i need quicker results for my analyst mentality.
Ruth and Garrett another great video. I wish they were longer!! Garret is a lucky man to have such a beautiful wife that works alongside him. Looking forward to the next one. Take care 👍⚓️🔨

The purchase of the electric caulking gun was a great investment as it will save you much time and effort.
You have done an awesome job on the boat. Keep up the good work. Just a tip about caulking, take some pliers and squeeze the end of the calking tube to match the groove of the seams. This will ensure the calk gets to all the spots.

That tool is so cool! (The electric caulk gun)
The electric calk gun, I'd say, was worth the investment. Thanks for the video.
In the 60's when I used to caulk our wooden cruisers we used dap caulking in a can...used only a putty knife to caulk seams
You should have a splash party and ask for donations for your cruising kitty. I am only a few miles away and would be happy to bring beer and food. Love your vids. I am trying to restore a Westsail 32 and I thought that was hard until I came across your channel. Cheers, keep up the good work, and videos.

Bom trabalho irmãos..
Ohh, we are also hit with the same flu bug. I hope you will better soon. It is impossible to work on the boat with such illness.
On the Chesapeake the watermen use the wax from toilet rings to seal bottom planks after yard work.
Love the vids, pretty sure I heard some Natural Mystic in there at one point, very nice
Nothing like a little Bob to get you motivated and feeling alright :)
~R
Good lord get that jalopy in the water All Ready !!!
Bravo pour votre courage et votre travail je suis en France près de Nice
Merveilleux! Merci :)
R
i really hope garret get's better soon
Picking the inexpensive caulk.. totally Buehler.
~Hans
I really enjoy watching your journey. Thanks
Should call Lou to come help ya. He would probably be a hoot to work with too. Very smart man even if he looks like Popeyes dad! Lol. Good job mates! Prayers from your Texan fan for your health through the project (the both of you and your fur baby)!!
hahahaha Thanks Rob!
I recently watched the building of an 18th century ship. The caulking material they used I think was twine soaked in a tar or oil.
I’ve been in a carpenter for 30 years. That PL Polyurethane is the best paintable exterior caulk available at Home Depot next to 5200. I haven’t used much 5200 so I can’t say it’s better but I can tell you that PL will last 10 years easily unpainted on a House.
Right on that's good to hear haha Love 5200 but we couldn't use it for the seams because it's like a heavy glue, we needed something flexable
:)R
Correction: we didn't use 5200 because, yes, it's a glue but it is flexible we just didn't want to glue the planks together.
Garrett was late to the comment answering party haha
:)R
Muito bom Parabéns.
nice work :) It's not wooden.. but i'm building a boat too, so hopefully we can all raft up somewhere warm in the future.
Fair winds..
Rhys
Super 😊 Great
It's amazing 2018 And the wood boat technically hasn't changed 200 hand caulk is still the by go to . And the talk about dreaming about doing it yourself and fulfilling it. That's got to satisfieing. And is bathrooms or window by caulk .the only fairly new technology. Cool.
un hello de france courage a tout les deux
Nice boat very classic lines and style right down to the mallet he's using. (But nice fresh wood and no dry rot!) Great progress
Gj guys
