    A nice tribute. Growing up in the 1960s as a teenager, I fondly remember the CBS Sunday Radio Program playing Broadway Show Tunes.

      Guess Who. Richard Rodger's is on record, ( no pun intended ), as stating that neither he or Oscar Hammerstein 11, were songwriters, because neither could write a song out of the context of a musical. Richard Rodgers stated that they were musical theatre writers.

    Enjoyed your R&H documentary video very much. I've been in love with R&H musical movies since I was little girl watching them on TV. I try to see live R&H musicals performances at our town's theaters as much as I can. As Shirley Jones is one of my favorite musical actresses, I saw her perform live in "The Music Man" with her son, Patrick Cassidy. I never get enough of watching her in "Oklahoma" & "Carousel". As "Cinderealla" is now the hot R&H musical on Broadway, I hope to see it on tour.

    Not sure I understand the claim that "Many a New Day" has no counter-melody. If true, that would be a giant step backwards. It has a chromatic bass line to begin with, a counter-melody in half-notes at bar 38 and a very prominent counter-melody at bar 84 in the dance music.

    Love your documentary... one correction... you talk briefly about Hammerstein's Grandfather, Uncle, and his Father.... but the corresponding pictures, as you talk, are of his Father, his Uncle, and his Grandfather. Other than that, and the year of Hammerstein's Death, which you already corrected.... It's great! :)

    Sorry to be a stickler, but at 0:33 you show a Playbill for Showboat which, unless Rodgers collaborated in some way that I'm not aware of, and I'd like to know, if it's so, Showboat was a Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II creation. Thank you!

    Although I consider myself an R&H fan, I strenuously object to the constant
    misinformation perpetrated by the R&H publicity machine as well as uninformed
    'experts.' While OKLAHOMA! was certainly a landmark show, it was hardly
    "the first serious musical." This "documentary" mentions SHOW BOAT as
    though it was just a successful afterthought when it dealt with miscegenation
    and other topics that put OKLAHOMA'S "who will Laurie go to the box social
    with?" back to '20s shows.. Yes, the score, direction, Agnes DeMille's choreography
    and other elements were first rate, but the basic STORY is still trivial. By
    comparison, Kern & Hammerstein's SHOW BOAT, Rodgers' own PAL JOEY (with Hart) and the Gershwin-Hayward PORGY AND BESS all tackled far more dramatic
    themes and adult storylines. But they are all swept aside by the commercial
    and critical success of OKLAHOMA! -a terrific show, but not quite as innovative
    as the R&H office would like everyone to believe. It's 2015, and 70 years
    later after OKLAHOMA'S debut; it's time to put the show in some kind of historical
    and FACTUAL perspective.

    • @liesljones5987
      @liesljones5987 8 лет назад

      Sorry Otkugo, there were NUMEROUS run-of-the-mill musicals thatfollowed OKLAHOMA! as well as a few Innovators of their own:MY FAIR LADY, WEST SIDE STORY, GYPSY, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA-all of which had STRONGER STORYLINES . Yes, OKLAHOMA! was an Important Show and was Immensely Popular. But many people feel it was eclipsed by R&H's own CAROUSEL and SOUTH PACIFIC. Asfor "flaws" and non-integrated songs, how does OKLAHOMA's"Kansas City do ANYTHING beyond introducing Will Parker intothe plot? PAL JOEY -with no cutesy dialogue and secondary couple -did everything a good musical did -and added TRUTH to the mix.

    • @mylesgarcia4625
      @mylesgarcia4625 6 лет назад +1

      So you are belittling/diminishing OKLAHOMA! because it has a very basic. homespun, unpretentious story line vs. the grander SHOW BOAT? That's hardly R&H's fault. And perhaps you are comparing apples to oranges. Yes, SHOW BOAT is far grander and a more ambitious work (many consider it an operetta) than OK, but its second act is also far more rickety, overly clunky and post-climactic than OKLAHOMA's entirely credible, simple ending. Besides, have you ever considered that because it was their first collaboration, they wanted to try something a little more simple? So, R&H should not have attempted to write OKLAHOMA! because it was not as grand a story as SHOW BOAT? Blame the Theatre Guild for bringing the two of them together, and Lynn RIggs' play to them. Also, read the new book, SOMETHING WONDERFUL by Todd Purdum. It might get you off your high horse soapbox.
