Remember the episode when Johan dressed as Nina sent Milos to the red district? Go watch the scene where they talked at the table and now you will understand why Johan's face suddenly changed when Milos said her mother for sure will recognize him... as they say a mom will always recognizes who is her child... Johan was always tormented for the moment he described to Tenma, what made him into who he became is the doubt about her mother's choice... did she try to save him or did she mixed them up? ...

  • @medimed4772

To give more insight into johan's pov after that moment where he saw the monsterish look on his mom's face as she was trying to choose between them, his mom left and his sister was taken away, after which he spent a couple of days alone ruminating on that incident with only the "monster without a name" book for company which influenced a lot of what he did later on.
His first reaction after this traumatic event was empathy for his sister, he wanted to protect her from the trauma he just experienced, protect her from the world that would take her family away even if he has to become a monster. Untill she saw him murder the liebert and saw that he ended up becoming the monter that would traumatize his sister which finally broke him and made him want to die untill tenma saved me.
There were only 2 people who were ever good to Johan, wolf and tenma, but wolf betrayed him as he put him in 511 kinderheim right after, so tenma was the embodiment of goodness for him, having him kill him at the end would have proven his point that good doesn't exist in this world.

I think the mom ultimately did not love her children equally, even if if that difference was super tiny and insignificant in any other situation. It goes into the idea that every parent has their favorite even if they try to hide it. Normally a parent doesn't ever have to make it obvious but Johan's and Nina's mother was forced to the brink to have to make that choice. You see, it wasn't that the mother chose a child that screwed Johan up. It was that she changed her mind. Had she just chosen one and let them go, Johan could have seen it as random. That while she both loved her children equally, she had to randomly choose one because the situation forced it. However, by changing her mind, it meant that she actually had a preference and it wasn't just random.
That was what screwed Johan up. That's why Johan kept asking if people's lives were equal throughout the series. The real monster was a mother who did not love her kids equally. After all, if otherwise identical looking twins were not seen as equal by the mother who bore them, then how can you say that all lives are equal?

    • @imamekrim9291
      @imamekrim9291 Месяц назад

Wrong , she hasn't another choice in that situation cuz Bonaparta and his team forced her to choose between the twins so she can't defend cuz she was only, she didn't want to loose the both twins, that's why Bonaparta forced her to choose and that's why she hesitates choosing at that moment.
Imagine if you're a single mother and some men forced you , If you resist you will loose the both twins.
The real monster is Johan's vision about life and world and self and existence, but Johan is a delusionist with his memories and his emotions so he thoughts that her mother is evil.
But the real problem begins before his birth when Bonaparta starts his experiment that influences Johan as well when he feels the suffering of his pregnant mother.

Genuinely the perfect way to end a series, really made the whole thing for me. As a complete beginning to end story, its currently my favorite. I love how the ending itself and the scene with Johan talking to Tenma are both left open to interpretation. My interpretation is that Johan did not have that conversation with Tenma and that it was just Tenma pictureing Johan talking to him about what his mom told Tenma. Previously when we have seen Johan disappear from a place no trace is left, but here at the end his bed is left messy, there is proof Johan existed. I like to think Johan just like the Magnificent Steiner "became human again"... For such a dark series, it was also very heartwarming 90 percent of the time

Thoughts on what happened to Johan at the end :
It's left as an open issue at the end of the series. Johan was operated on and saved yet again by Tenma and when he went to visit Johan at the police hospital, who was in a coma originally, Johan sat up and was talking to Tenma. But later we see the same room with an empty hospital bed.
The conversation at the end was about which child Johan's mother wanted to keep, him or Anna/Nina. So there may be a clue in that.
    Some of the possibilities:
    1. He died after waking up from the coma and talking to Tenma (Or Alternatively, the talking to Tenma bit could have been a daydream, but he died anyways)
    2. He was released and he's alive and well
    3. He escaped from the police hospital just like the beginning of the show and continues his ways.
But the focus should be on the mother and her choice on which twin to give up and which to "save" and the title of the last episode, "The Real Monster". There's always been confusion as to which was which because previously we were told from conflicting memories. Some people think that the title of "The Real Monster" is the mother, some people think it's referring to everyone and the world, how the world can make anyone a monster, or, Johan is the real monster afterall. Each of these sort of correlates to one of the possibilities.
If the mother was the real monster for choosing one twin and unwanted the other, Johan dies and Nina lives. If everyone's really a monster, Johan was absolved (for the most part, maybe not criminally) of all of his crimes because the world and the people in it are the real monsters. If Johan is the true monster here, then he escaped from the police hospital and continues to play the role of the "real monster".
So it's up to your interpretation. Who do you think the real monster is?

    • @whade62000
      @whade62000 2 месяца назад +5

I prefer 4: he escaped, but he has found his answer and did what he wanted, so he'll just disappear. He'll never be harmless, but he won't commit a crime on that scale again, if only to honor Tenma, and to find something different in himself.

    • @Xenoprism

There's a line that Lunge says at one point, something to the effect of "no human can live without leaving their mark where they've been". So I think at the end, Johan does indeed escape the hospital, but he leaves the bed undone and the window open, signifying that he's reclaimed his humanity.

I highly recommend to you Antoher Monster, the official sequel to this masterpiece. It’s a book written as a report by a detective that was investigating a serial killer that killed himself after “completing the mission”. He notices a possible connection to the case of Johan Liebert, the so called “Monster” by the media. So he makes his way into looking at all the information and interviewing familiar characters to know what is going on. It’s a great read and a good follow up on some special characters, and a deeper dive into more secondary storylines from the original series. Also a good look on Johan’s past and future after this ending. Loved every reaction, thank you for watching this underrated masterpiece ❤

I think Tenma told him his name , we just didn't hear it
Also they got Tenma innocent but pinning everything on Roberto that's why Johan was not locked up
Concerning the ending , it is a direct parallel to the first episode , look how everyone treated Johan campared to the first episode (Tenma's speach when Johan is "sleeping " , Nina/Anna forgiving him/not shooting him , learning about his name and that someone loves him etc.... ) All of that is pointing at the fact that the Johan who escaped the hospital is gonna be a different man and not a monster anymore ( also with Johan the monster was always some external being : the "double personality" arc , Franz Bonaparta and now his mom for her horrible choice , that's why the title is so interesting and always asks the question of "who is the real monster in the story " of course the simple anwser is Johan because of all the crimes he did but if you take Johan like more of a concept/philosophy than a character/person it's far more complicated.
I think the thing I love the most about Monster is that Urasawa never betrayed his characters for the sake of drama or character development , Tenma stayed Tenma in despite of everything and he was even a better person in the end , as a doctor he was meant to save people ( as a doctor you must treat even the worst killer as any other patient ) and Urasawa never went against that and to me that was the most beautiful and unique thing in such a dark and complicated show/manga. At the end of the day shit happens and it can fuck you up but we must stay true to ourselves and try to be better everyday and that's what most characters did

I saw some comments on other videos that really stuck with me, so I'm stitching them all into one. Rant incoming, lol…
After the kids and their mom were released from captivity, she raised them in the Three Frogs, and dressed them both as girls to make it look like she only had one child so that she could keep their presence lowkey, Johan being dressed to look just like his sister is what started his Identity crisis at a very young age. His mother likely did not refer to either of the kids by their true names so that they wouldn't reveal that to someone by mistake, this would have also contributed to the very beginning of Johan’s mental health and identity issues. But despite all of this, Poppe had them under surveillance all along, until he and Capek came to take one of the children to the red rose mansion, soon after taking the mother away and leaving Johan alone with a copy of “The Nameless Monster” until Anna returned.
The flashback scene near the end when Johan is talking to Tenma in the hospital shows the exact moment that Johan’s identity crisis was solidified. He not only had the terror and guilt of seeing his sister taken away in his place, but also the confusion of not knowing whether their mother wanted to protect him, or simply gave up Anna by mistake; and the anger from seeing their mother make a choice at all. That, combined with what's probably some pre-existing neurological issues caused him to lose his grip on reality; when Anna returned and told Johan about the mansion, he internalized her experiences and believed they were his own. This chain of events is responsible for Johan's behaviors and mental health issues: his desire to protect Anna, his distrust of parental figures, his manipulative and borderline sociopathic/at times seemingly sadistic tendencies juxtaposed to his empathetic/sympathetic side , his nihilism, and his attempts to reconcile his identity and what it means to be human.
The real monster of this series is nihilism living in any human being that we deal with through love. The experiment didn't force the mother to choose a child, it just brought out the nihilism in her like Bonaparta said "humans can become anything".
Johan tried to turn Tenma into a monster, he wanted Tenma to shoot him to prove that all lives are not equal. When his plan wasn't working he grabbed Whim to try forcing Tenma to shoot him. Despite this Johan was shot in the head by Whim's father and not Tenma in order to protect his son. Tenma defeated him in this situation, he ruined Johan’s ultimate plan, did not become a monster, and he proved that all lives are equal by saving Johan for the second time.
Johan got everything that he had ever wanted. Ultimately being, A name which Tenma told him he was given by his mother, forgiveness from Nina, and revenge against Bonaparta. But there's one more crucial thing that he received, the thing that we all need to survive.
As you may have guessed, the last words from Grimmer are extremely relevant.
"I think I must have figured out how the show ended. The Magnificent Steiner, he probably became human again"
Johan became human again because he received something he never thought he got in his whole life, love. Tenma showed him what it means to have someone truly care about you, and recognize that you are human too. In "Another Monster" which is written by Urasawa it mentioned that Johan escaped the hospital and later lived a normal, peaceful life, never causing strife or killing another human being again.

One last thing about the series tho, remember that episode with Hartmann where he quoted kid Johan's:
"Hate is born when people come together. I only poured a little oil onto it."
Something similar is happening right now and I'm kinda already forseen it but to witness it going to such an extend. Really goes to show that with bad "evil" intend, you can instigate such a normal triviality into something that would bring out the worst in people.

"It's always good men who do the most harm in the world."
When i reached this final chapter in the manga. It brought me back to that quote in the first chapter of Monster, and so, was it true? For Tenma and what he was doing back then. And given opportunity again, he will continue to do it. Was it right? Or wrong?
Just like Johann and Nina's names, Johann illusion question in the hospital, some things will never have a proper answer and reveal.
Still, glad to see you guys watch Monster till the end, which can be quite boring at time because it just felt so much slower than the manga. I still hope you could try to find and buy the manga tho, it'll be like a whole new different experience as times pass.

I think author foreshadowed the fact that johan's mother was real monster.. if u think about it, it would actually make sense..she was the one who johan hated most except bonaparta.. the way johan burned her potrait was another foreshadow... offcourse she was not at fault at all.. but her lines saying her children will take revenge was out of order when bonaparta finally helped the twins and killed other people involved .. then again there can be multiple ""Evil guy"" of this anime depending on one's prespective and world view 😊

    What a journey! 🎉

  • @imamekrim9291
    @imamekrim9291 Месяц назад

Inspector Lunge represents Naoki Urasawa himself or the narrator in the story as I see, so the only goal of this journey is proving the existence of Johan and searching for this monster who's born by Germany and the twin's mother represents Germany , Johan and Nina represent West and East Germany.
Don't forget Roberto's man who Lunge shot him in episode 71 maybe he will be a witness of Johan's crimes or maybe Lunge will force Johan to confess cuz Lunge is the only Monster's character who have a rationality and logical analys thinking + self control without any childhood traumas.
Grimmer is a reinforcement subplot to the main idea of the story: care or compassion defeated nihilism and Grimmer defeated nihilism by his optimism and care even if he had a lack of care inside him and proved that kindness and heroism can be born from the epicentre of suffering.
About Johan's nihilism and his absurdity is defeated by the Idea of care and compassion like Bonaparta and other exemples in the show, Lunge called Tenma to heal him so Johan's plan I mean the perfect suicide has failed maybe you think that he's broken but don't forget that he's a manipulator and he didn't no effort to resist during the story, don't forget his absurdist game of surfaces with children that's mean he didn't expect the drunk shot gun , my big problem with him is that: the most of his actions and plans still off screen, a mystery just for fun.
Care or love can be a solution but not everytime in the real world.
The symbolism of names in Monster is care because calling a person by his real name is the small behavior means that you care about him, and without care or interest or belonging and other connections with the world we can't form an identity.
For me the last scene wasn't necessary cuz it's opened other questions without answers and that's not the kind of mystery what I like. I like when author gives us enough answers after a long suspence as an equivalent, but I understand this scene's symbolism about the end of his nihilism.

Can you please genuinely explain to me how the mother is the monster because after watching the anime, I ruled that Franz Bonaparta was the Monster since he orchestrated an experiment achieve a goal that made a negative impact on his subjects, and the mother unfortunately is one of them. She obviously did not want to give one of her kids, but was forced to choose one. She was part of Bonaparta's experiment, and raised her kids the best way she can because Bonaparta was hunting them down. I mean I just don't understand why you think she's the monster but not the people who created the experiment when they're the reason why this happened. I hope you can explain it to me. Thank you
