Build, weather and light your 1:350 scale K't'inga!

Polar Lights is going to sell a ton of these, and I'm sure that many of those buyers will be grateful to have your outstanding build video available!
Thanks Justin! It was a lot of fun. I was a bit intimidated when I opened the box but it all went smoothly!
I hope they release the TOS D7 and the USS Reliant.
@@AvengerII Too True Mate!!
As a weathering agent, I use various coloured charcoals and fan style pastel paint brushes. For me it gives the greatest control of colour and application. I do all my weathering after detail and decal mode.
Correct, applying decals over weathering could look goofy and make it hard for them to stick down well.
Mine is on its way in the mail.. I am so excited to follow your videos on this.
Have fun, enjoy the build video, it's all there for you to check out.
I knew when I started this vid, it was going to be great and you did not disappoint! With that view of it head on, in the pitch black with the lights on... Very intimidating! Such a cool looking ship, I've always loved the look of it. Great job as always!!!
Thanks a million!
You have a new subscriber. This is an outstanding build. And this is one of the great things about being a modeler, we have the right to do a model in the way we see fit and no one has the right to complain at all. as for me, I do build some kits 100% accurate and some kits I go off script on. Ive taken car kits and turned them into post apocalyptic vehicles and a long time ago I built the tank from the movie Tank Girl . Its all about what we see in our minds.
Yeah this isn't a paint perfect Star Trek model, and I'm a major fan of all that is Star Trek. This is a bad a$$ representation of the K'tinga. Also I haven't checked out your other builds yet, but this is just my opinion.. And maybe just because this type of build.
I like to see some of the builders assembly technique's, painting style. and any other tips, tricks, and the process. That the builder has used. I love to see and learn new things in model building. It doesn't matter if someone's been building for 20 years or this is day 1 for a builder. Ok, ive gone way off course here. My meds are kicking in. This is still an outstanding build and one to be proud of. Thanks
hpiguys Workshop for doing this build.
Ok I'm off now for some cookies and milk.
Thanks Ron!
Fantastic build. She is quite a beauty. I'm pretty sure "soup ladle" is the technical term. Thanks for the video. Magnificent as always
Thank you Darth!
Excellent video and brilliant work. Rodge David Kidderminster UK 😀
Much appreciated Rodge!
Before you build, watch as many video's as possible. The instructions are limiting at best. NOTE: Do not use the photo-etching, it's too hard to get right. Besides, the plastic parts are just fine.
Thanks for posting this.
This kit will actually help be the basis for my future CG build of the K't'inga. :)
Very nice, have fun with it!
i know this video is old however i havent built models on over 30 years. As a star trek fan this gave me some inspiration. Interesting the movie cut shows the ship camo green with almost no other color, so its open to interpretation. Your techniques helped me with the build.I thank you. I just bought the 1;350 polar light Ncc-1701 and forbidden planet ship. I will tackle those after finishing up the Ktinga.
Do you mask all the clear parts before painting? Especially the front grill
Wow, that is amazing, I hope to someday build some Star Trek stuff. keep up the great work and have an amazing day.
Thank you Chopper! You can always start with the smaller kits too, those are always a delight.
Is the scale correct ? Because in memory alpha the ship size is 350 meters ... This model should have 1 meter long ..
Hell Yea! Keep up the good work and the trek kits. I enjoy chilling out with your videos. Keep it up.
Thanks man!
i will have to add this to my collection
You bet!
I'm still looking for this one model as well as the 1:350 Enterprise refit.
I can't be the only one who doesn't have the patients to built this over months. I'm an instant gratification guy.
i got to 5:40 and saw your plans on the wall. that makes a really cool wall-hanging, like its supposed to be there.
Very cool Chris! Nicely done man, excellent job! 👍👍✌🏻Doug
Thanks Doug!
Per your opening remarks: Don't sweat it, because when it comes to Klingon ships it's often a bit of Star Trek canon that unlike StarFleet the Klingon Commanders will sometimes customize their ships in terms of specific paint colors...(that's my stance so that I don't obsess too much about "accuracy". Paint the colors that YOU like).
PLUS one can assume that Klingons are not particularly fastidious when repairing damage, as an example. So, "rivet counters" can back off! For instance, I'm building my first K't'inga with the PL lighting kit, and generally the box art color guide -- this will be "practice". The second kit will be lit with other after-market choices (such as Tena controls) and will have subtly different paint cues. But I have to finish the Enterprise re-fit first, since it's already started.
Thanks Tim!
Great video build..great model..always been a fan of the D7 battle cruiser may have to buy another one now Polar Lights let's be having the 1/350 USS RELIANT..
Thanks John! I like the sci fi stuff, cars, well, anything really!
Got this and my lighting kit is on the way. Will go nice with my 1/350 TOS Enterprise. Paragrafics does have a photo etch hanger deck for those that wish to go that direction. I will also paint and detail as i see fit. If i wanted a movie model, i would buy one. To me, the purpose of modelling is a way to express ones self and creativity. This is a great build. Mine will be done in various shades of grey to try to stick to the TV model, abut with much more detail. Enjoy!!!
Enjoy!
I didn't realise just how big this model is - it's maHOOsive, as we Brits like to say. I did expect it to fly off of its own accord...
Yuge! LOL
I wonder if that kit can be modded into a Romulan battle cruiser?
The Romulans flew D7s, so why not K'Tingas...
wow , great job ! thanks for sharing ! How did you like the lighting kit ? I hesitate between this one and the one from Tenacontrol , don't know...
The R2 one is all plug and play and all the LED bulb attachment points are made to dit it, so I enjoyed it.
Did you think at any stage of maybe running the wires to the battery pack down through the stand/tube so you wouldn't have to remove the top section every time you wanted to turn it on and off...That's what i've been thinking of doing..
You could easily do that by increasing the length of the wires from the battery pack to the control board.
is this available now?
How difficult is it to build this kit with the lights? I suck at building model kits, but at the same time, I've been after a good representation of this ship for years.
It's really easy. The plastic goes together well and light blocks itself. The lighting kit is made for the kit, so it's lettered out for each location, the led bulbs fit into slots made for them and you glue them in.
The lighting kit shows you how to run the wires also.
Soup ladle....I'm a trekkie but I fucking love you LOL!!!
Thank you Sol!
So are the torpedo tubes always on/lit?
I did this kit in high school... also had the refit Enterprise. They hung from my ceiling opposite each like a battle was going to start. Lol!
Another great build.
DANG IT!!! I swore that I was going to stop buying kits!!! I have more than enough to last my lifetime!!!
To me this is the ONLY ship worth modeling from the Star Trek universe. It just LOOKS so...so...KLINGON!!! Thanks for the vid HPI Guy!
Thanks for watching Larry!
This is the first time I've lighted an entire kit and it went really well thanks to great engineering by Round2.
Is this light kit better quality than the one for the 350th Tos Enterprise. A lot of people were having trouble with that one. I did my own for that model including better motors for the bussard collectors.
I can't comment on the other kit as I do not have it. The light kit in this one is easy to use and fits perfectly without issues.
Thanks for getting back to me. I am uploading a video as I type of the 1/1000th scale USS Defiant that I decided to fully light. It will be up in a couple of hours in case you are interested.
This video is really helpful but how did you mask the grill in the shuttle bay housing
Either used tape or silly putty on things that needed masking.
They need to do more big kits like this mi want to do gorkons ship from Star Trek six
Iv never lit a kit before
Cool!
so nice!!!
like it
Thanks!
Is this kit made solely to be lit? Can someone paint in the windows and navigation lights if they wanted to?
You can happily leave it unlit and paint the backing behind the windows if you wish. The kit comes with the clear parts to do so.
Beautiful model, Great work.
Thanks!
Completely enjoyed this one, mostly cause I'm a Trekkie lol. Question though, how in the name of all that is holy did you mask that off!?
Nm I scrolled further and found the answer =)
No problem. Just lots of masking with tape and then cutting out the designs, painting, remasking, etc.
Think I used a half roll of tape easily.
Nice-looking decal on the ships clear on the bottom I never could figure that out but that's how it is
Whoa, whoa, whoa... maybe I missed it but did you mask all of the open light portholes with silly putty before starting the painting process? How did you accomplish that for the front windows and rear engine nacelles? Thanks..
Yup, just press it into the port holes and any other spot you want to mask and cut off the overhang. When done just use a toothpick and scoop it out. Easy peasy.
hpiguys Workshop Even the teeny-tiny holes?
Yup, just pick it out with a toothpick or small metal awl when done. Don't leave it in there for days or weeks. Mask, paint, remove an hour later.
I felt the same way when I built my refit enterprise years ago....I was like " this is awesome".....now I can't find it. one day I will, and when that happen I'm going to put lights in it too.
LOL, thanks!
how do you mask all those tiny windows?
Blue masking tape cut in thin strips and also silly putty molded into shape, placed over the windows and cut way from the outline with a razor.
when is the date, the model is on sale is it just the usa or is it on sale in most county,s the same time ?
Should be in US shops this week. No idea on when it will be overseas.
Missed a spot, sorry I had to wipe the drool off. Beautiful job Chris. Loved the personal touches. Being a Star Trek fan, I gotta say FREAKIN' WOW. You are the man. Thank you for sharing. Until next time. Build on Brother.
Haha, thanks Wilson!
Now I gotta buy one. Kind of had to anyways. You know to go with my 1/350 enterprise I started forever ago
Very cool, enjoy!
is there a painting guide for this model? It's on the way but I was wondering if there is anything available to show you how to paint it to match the studio model.
Hi Mark, I mention and show a few times in this video that the box has a full color view of all the sides and their colors and all the colors listed by manufacturer as well.
You can take a look at the preview video where I show all the parts and the color guides as well.
@@hpiguy ah ha! I see the paint guide now. I had to open the box (it just arrived!) and the guide is along the outside box so I missed it.
Good Wednesday evening everyone. It was a great video, with an equally great model. As a diorama, I would suggest two other battlecruisers but each constructed in a larger scale. Add some angel hair, painted and properly illuminated, and, Voila! -- Say hello to V'JER! Regards, John
Thanks John, that would be a massive display but very cool!
Excellent job on your ship I volunteer to work this Saturday just to buy this model love your take on the battle paint schemes I hope to put a remote in mine and hang it for my ceiling
Thanks. Hope you get enough OT to buy it!
Thanks for another great review and build. Did you consider using hot glue to hold down the LEDs?
Thanks Clay! You could use hot glue for sure, I like the immediate hold of CA and no strings of glue after.
It's nice when someone goes for "screen accurate" but it's even nicer when a true fan goes after making a Trek model because they really like it. Screen accuracy is a mutable thing after all. Remember there are many houses in the Klingon empire and they field different ships for the empire. They also customize them to a certain extent so....have at and enjoy m8. Over time there have been changes too. The 'hanger bay' used to be considered the impulse engine, the torpedo launcher in the forward hull used to be a sensor system and other things as well. I do wish they had done more for the interior of the hanger bay for the D7 like they did for the 1/350 Enterprise. Some Klingon shuttles, To'Duj fighters and a deck area would have been awesome IMHO. Some other visible deck spaces (like the Enterprise's arboretum or officer's lounge) would have really pushed this kit over the top. I do love the re-engineered connecting surfaces that eliminate a lot of join weaknesses in the kit. In truth though, I've never heard terms like 'soup ladel' and 'cobra head' applied to a D7 before. Had me LMAO too. Aside from your organizational skills and planning methodology, what I really like about your vids is how excited you sound while you are explaining things to us. That's gonna make the rest of the build a must see for me. Thanks again man. Looking forward to more.
Thanks cy! It's all about fun for me. Zero drama! Glue and spray it and enjoy yourself. Thanks again!
You got me itching to build ALL the Star Trek models now. That is an awesome job you did. I didn't know that they made lightning kits for the models.
It was fun, I like building just about anything.
Being an ultimate Trekker, myself, I appreciate your build along with your interesting naming conventions :)
Thanks man!
Like your cometary. It is quite funny sport!!
Thanks!
I don't know if you like model jets, but I'm sure of it. Anyways I think you should try a Airfix kit. I'd like to know your thoughts.
I did do a full jet build some time ago on the channel, an F15 by Academy. Haven't done one recently.
I'm looking forward to my pre-order arriving. Thanks for taking us through the build. She's going to be well worth the wait.
Thanks Mark, you shouldn't have any issues!
Thank you for posting this video I hope I will be able to buy one in the near future. I remember the saying " Build for your own Satisfaction, Not to others expectations"
You are completely correct Sol! Thanks!
Sweet she's ready for battle sir nice
Thanks!
Sweet!!!
Thanks!
Chris, that was absolutely awesome!! What a sweet kit. Thanks aging for sharing the review.
Thanks Bryan, glad you liked it!
how do you change the batteries?
In the video we show how the entire bay lifts off and the battery box can be accessed.
I think you did a great job. I would think that different commanders would choose their own paint scheme to be identified with. Just thinking out loud.
Thank you John!
Beautiful job.
Thank you!
Ok they need to do every Star Trek ship
Would be cool!
I've been waiting for this. I'm not much of a star trek fan. But I love this ship. Gotta have it. Very nice work !!!
Thanks, it's a fun build up!
I always thoroughly enjoy your videos, what I enjoy most is the non-elitist attitude towards modeling. I, like you, usually end up using spray cans on a lot of my models and it is gratifying to see someone else do the same. Thanks for the great videos and especially for this Klingon beauty.
Thank you Jim, really appreciate the nice words. No out of control egos or attitudes here, just modeling fun of all types. :)
Excellent vid! Great work on a beautiful kit. My must have list has just grown.
Thanks Rik!
Beautiful job. If I had a nit pick it would be the strobe seems fast. Hope I do half as good as you did.
Thanks David!
Great job as always, Chris. I liked how you added your own touch to the paint scheme - looks likes it's been in a few winning fights! - Mark
Thank you Mark!
Fine job as always. I have followed your channel for a while now and I like the reveiws you do. Looking forward to more.
Awesome Mark!
I think you just like saying, "K'Tinga"! lol
Who doesn't? Hahaha, thanks!
Gorgeous build.
I'm glad you took time out of your day to watch and comment! Thanks!
Soup ladle?! My god, man, that’s the gagh bucket!
Either way, looks like a soup scooper to me. Fun build regardless.
Simply beautiful. There's one thing that "bother" me tho. BEFORE you put the decal underneath, the blinking light seemed to be more visible when you closed your light. After that, we couldn't even see it being reflected on the base. Did that decal partially cover it?
The decal does cover the light. It tints the light red so I left it because it looked neat flashing red.
You can cut the decal that goes over the light to keep it bright white or you can let it be red. Also the base is a flat reddish color now so the light won't reflect off it much anymore

Nice build! Beautyful... keep the good work!
Thanks Israel!
would have liked to see how you masked the lights. that is something that i am not sure how to do (i am new to modeling)
Hi Mark,
Masking you'll find is very easy. Just get some nice painter's tape, the blue, green or yellow tapes work well and lay it over the part you want to keep unpainted. Press it down with your thumb.
Then take your Xacto knife and cut around the border of the piece and remove the excess tape. You are all masked and ready to paint.
Apply light coats around the mask and let them dry to avoid soaking paint under it.
I've ordered the K'tinga and the light system.I cant wait!!
Enjoy!
Awesome work! That is quite the kit, very nice job you did on it.
Thanks Jon!
Love it!!!, the soup ladle connects to the cobra head, absolutely love it. Great build!
Thanks!
Wow
Thanks!
Thank you for such an informative video! I am working on mine right now!
Very cool, enjoy it!
Are u taking commissions
Seriously incredible. Im telling you, I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic build - so huge and looks so neat. Thanks for the great job.
Thanks!
SWWEEETTTT!!
Thanks!
wouuuuw, that is one magnificent build you got there
Thanks Rik!
Great build my friend! I love it!
Live long and prosper Todd!
Turned out very nice.
Thank you!
great job!!! gotta have me one of these!!!
Thanks! Enjoy your kit!
Great build.
Thanks Charles!
thanks Chris
Thanks!
Just beautiful
Thanks Ezri!
First🤪
;/
Perfect.
Thank you Chris!
1:21 shameful. I expect this to be accurate down to the atoms of the model used in the film. Every ship would be different as the klingons tend to be quite grimy. Great video
Thanks man. I agree. You'll never please some, but those folks rarely build anyway they just complain and complain.
As a Trek fan that loves the shows and movies, I think it's an awesome kit and anyone that sees it knows exactly what it is.
@@hpiguy no pun intended but I can't see the logic in complaining. I really love watching videos of model making and since Klingons don't know how to treat their ship's every one of them is going to be different like I said. I plan on getting this model kit myself at some point and will attempt as much accuracy that I feel like. Thanks again
I don't think I've comment on your channel before but I absolutely love it!!! Thanks and thanks for all the great builds and hard work you do!!! I've pre ordered this and can't wait!!
Thanks Captain!
