I definitely know what you know mean. I grew up watching Barry Norman's Film series and was always trying to win a director's chair. Jonathan Ross, isn't in the same league as Barry Norman. When I hear the Film series, intro music used on that new TV advert it breaks my heart. Can't believe it's 40 years ago, where did it all go. RIP Barry Norman, one of heroes my childhood , teenage, and young adult years.
Saif Ahmed (self confessed film buff and know-it-all) from Newcastle: what a great pleasure and joy it was watching Mr Norman presenting Film right from the start. The depth of knowledge and analysis impressed me immensely. Its So disappointing to watch the present day presenters and commentators.
He was. There will never be another. BTW I've just spent the few seconds trying to brush off a hair from my monitor only to discover it was your avatar.
Even if a film was poor he was never nasty or sneering, but you could tell through his clever and subtle vocabulary if the film was a dud. He was one of the coolest dudes I've seen on TV, everything was effortless with him and his sardonic laid back drawl coupled with his lazy boy chair avuncalur jumper wearing demeanor made him one of the accidental dudes of TV.
The tune is "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free." by Billy Taylor. It's a Grade 3 jazz piano piece, which is how I learned the title. Here's Billy playing it: ruclips.net/video/brBtTluod_w/видео.html Oh just saw another commenter also pointed this out. Nina Simone used to sing it too, I think it's featured in the Netflix documentary about her.
MG Harris / I was just about to post a similar comment! I hope that in the 5 years since you posted that, you’ve had the opportunity to hear Nina Simone’s version - it’s my favourite!
I think my earliest memory of this program was watching the box office Top 10 for the UK and Crocodile Dundee was at the top. I was a regular watcher of it from about 1991 onwards - remember his classic reviews of Unforgiven, Schindler's List, In the Name of the Father, etc. I always loved the end of the year show with his Top 10 best and worst of the year. Such a great program.
I remember 1994 I wanted to watch prisoner cell block H on HTV Wales in the caravan on holiday, my dad looked in the newspaper and thought it was a good idea to wind me up and said he wanted to watch film 94 with Barry Norman, I was like Nooooo then he laughed what a relief 😆
Oh gawd, the nostaligia is overpowering. I used to stay up and watch Cell Block H on HTV Wales too. I miss those carefree days in the early 90s when I was at college, in a band and just having fun.
Does take me back to the early 80's film 84 always seems to stick in my mind for some bizarre reason. Such a mellow song, guess it reflects on my easy going youth.
This brings back good memories, in the days before IMDB, online reviews etc Mr Barry Norman's recommendations were vital in deciding what to watch at the local 'picture palace'.
@Raw Engineer There were a few critically acclaimed mainstream British films (My Beautiful Laundrette, The Crying Game etc) that pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable for general release because of their gay themes /characters yes. We were ahead of the curve with this type of filmmaking. Funny people would point out anything gay considering those types of films were definitely in the minority.
Brings back the mempries. Barry Norman and "Film" were part of my younger life from school on. Remember that sad little Christmas tree they used to have on set next to him LOL. He was the best. Great theme too. Thanks for posting.
Had this tune in my head this morning and remembered the Film programmes from my youth... now I've found the music here I've only just made the connection that it's the same song I've been enjoying a Jools Holland version of for the last few years! You should check it out his Big Band instrumentals are class, pity about the singing voice!
I always found old Barry a wonderful guide to what I'd like. Anything he hated, I loved, and whatever he gave praise to, I never found worth the price of admission. Once I realised the topsy-turvy nature of it, it worked well for me, for years.
Music by Bille Taylor ""I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free", was adopted as an unofficial anthem for the US civil rights movement and was recorded by Nina Simone for her 1967 album Silk and Soul. The BBC's Film show, which began as a national programme in 1972, also adopted the tune and made the instrumental version into an instantly recognisable classic in Britain"
Thank you so much for uploading the song. I loved the series and Barry Norman. These were the days when shows had great themes. years later I remember listening to Nina Simone song and it cast me back to this programme. I also remember BBC Arena theme tune as well. Thanks for the memories
Saw that he died and immediately had to play this piece of music. Ross was never of his standard, and now we just have nothing, a couple of idiots who talk off the cuff instead of reading a carefully prepared and well thought out piece.
Barry Norman was incomparable both in his insight and delivery. But Jonathan Ross was actually very good too. He loved the movies and had something to say. I miss the show and miss Barry especially.
Well here is something I never knew..I followed Film 86 from then - I never knew that it was even running in 1974 lol!!! Well well Mr Norman.....my goodness me!!!
Now that is a really witty clip you've got there; I mean.. to show his progression through the years as the individual exposures on a film-clip which is then run to make a short little 'story ' of his permutations.. Well done!
such a classic programme but only with barry norman. Would love to see his original reviews for such classic films from the 70's for godfather and taxi driver...downloadable? here on youtube? any info would be much appreciated!
All those years of anticipating the looming threat of the millennium bug, and how the BBC would deal with the imminent crisis over what to call it in the year 2000. Then they just went and called it Film 2000, and the disappointment was overwhelming.
I hanker for the return of somebody with Norman's style of authoratitive presentation and expertise as opposed to the kind of triviality of somebody like Winklemann.
@Bill4393 Thank God someone else has been wanting that music. The charts used to be the top 10 films in america, films in the uk, films in london and top ten videos. I started watching and think the chart music was from 1986-1988 that was the best - just upbeat, and perfect for the charts bit, before it got replaced by a more sedate, slower chart theme. If i get any info, i will drop you a mail.
I've been desperate to find the chart music from this show. I know one of the upbeat tracks was called 'The Commuter' because Barry said so on the show. But it seems to be google proof, and I don't know the writer.
nice tune [very nice] ,,,, BUT....anyone remember, or better still can upload, the original theme tune from the early 70s? it was an acoustic guitar with backing, i still got about half a bar of it in my head 40 years later. buy you a pint if you can! [upload it, that is] .
I was just a boy, but I remember him reviewing Salems Lot, and thinking that looks ace! Or was it points of view and someone complaining to the other Barry (Took)? Oh how the memory fades. Anyway loved the music, equal to Barry Norman's hatred of Schwarzenegger movies. So there you have it.
depressing watching the best years of your life disappear in 57 seconds.
Mark Page That's what she said
its 59 stupid!
So true

R.I.P Barry..you were a part of my growing up in the 70's & 80's.
So we all say.
And my growing up in the 90s! :)
Loved the theme music to this program
Brilliant theme tune !
Fond memories, watching this as a kid.
What a great tune! What great playing. What great memories. Thanks Barry. You were marvellous.

RIP Barry Norman. Was Britain's best film critic.

One of the wittiest, unique film critics of all time.
God it takes me back bearing that theme tune and barrys voice
Met him a twice most charming and informative man, one of the great's of television. R.I.P.
The legend that was Barry Norman "and why not"
My impression of what a critic is, and indeed what his theme music should be. RIP and thank you
This brings back good memories, in the days before IMDB, online reviews etc Mr Barry Norman's recommendations were vital in deciding what to watch at the local 'picture palace'.
@Raw Engineer that's a bit harsh!

THANK YOU for this....... halcyon days.
Just listened to Nina Simone, I wish I could be free. Same tune. Never knew. A fan of both people.

Hearing this theme song from bed as a young boy. Would pretend to be asleep when my mum checked on me.
"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" infused with a party atmosphere. This is what I call a theme tune!
