This song makes me melt because it brings back the memory of graduating from my career center. I drove home from it in tears because I knew I would never see some of my 19 classmates (who became my family over two years) ever again. This was the first song that came on when I pulled away and waved them goodbye. It was such a bittersweet dive. I don't miss high school, but damn, I miss that career center, my professor, and all my fellow students. My family for two straight years suddenly gone, but my memories of them were always so happy. This song reminds me of all that. It's kind of a roller coaster of emotions whenever I hear this.
This song is so emotional for me. Im 15 now. In 2009 me, my mom, my cousin(my best friend), his sister and parrents went to the US for the first time. I couldnt sleep on the plane, so i listend to this song, hoping it would help me sleep. Every time i hear it, i feel like im on the plane again. All the feelings come back. Its amazing.
Brandon Flowers actually said it was "dancer" because of the quote "We are raising a generation of dancers". Why are we still arguing about this 7 years later?
It does sound like denser it's probably an accent thing but I'm glad it's dancer , I wish it was dancers because we cant just be one dancer , or can we? Sometimes I think song writers just write any old lyrics and they have no real meaning to them
listened to this when I was 8 years old, everyday till every night! I grew to this song, I sung it for my parent's wedding. this song means the world to me. thanks for listening.
Idk about anyone else but when I hear this song it takes me back to the good old days of high school when life was so much more simple. This song brings back memories
I love the meaning behind this song!!! It's so true, to be a dancer is to follow the crowd and to try and fit into society by being like others, that's why the song says cut the cord, like a dancer is a puppet being controlled and to cut the cord means to cut the strings and become human/become your own person and be yourself and don't follow the crowd :)
I like your answer and interpretation of the song, Abigail. It's an intriguing song that fires up our own attempts to understand it and find meaning with our own lives. That's what I like about good music. However, the lyrics may also be an expression of the singer himself. I just saw THE KILLERS in concert last night at an outdoor festival in Switzerland (the crowd jumped like crazy and the energy went way up when this song came on - so it's a big hit here in Switzerland). Another good analysis of the song is here at: www.quora.com/What-is-meant-by-the-lyrics-“Are-we-human-or-are-we-dancer-”-in-the-song-“Human”-by-The-Killers

First of -- the band, the people who wrote the song with their own hands, confirmed that it's "dancer". And secondly, I think the grammatical thing is on purpose. When we attribute a person this trait, we say that he/she is "human". We are human. Our nature is human. We don't say that our nature is "humans". Same goes for "dancer" -- it's been turned into an attribute, a defining term for nature. In a world where we say goodbye to everything that makes us, are we free or are we playing along to "certain steps and choreography"? What's our nature? Is it human or is it dancer? Gave out my humble interpretation for those who think that "dancer" doesn't make any sense. I get the "denser" bit too, but don't say something doesn't "make sense" just because it's suddenly not what you thought it was. Try to rethink it again, what's the harm in interpreting a song different ways, seriously?
Tulpa here, I get it. I think it makes sense. I just feel like it comes off as implying dance isn't human, which to most people is dehumanizing. I think that's probably just lack of awareness, though. Either way, I like the implication given by 'denser' because it makes the song so powerful as a means of figuring out the true connotation of 'human'. Not only does it pose the question in an engaging way, it also leaves it's answer open ended. No two people are the same, so their answers will likely vary. This way, it lets each person come to their own answers. It's like a call to self discovery.
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." - Friedrich Nietzsche This is the best I can relate to this song.

It actually is dancer. I looked it up when the song first came out, and he's basically asking if we're humans who can think and decide for themselves or dancers who just go through already choreographed motions. It questions the notion of pre-determined destiny, that if one's fate is already decided, does one not get a say in how one's life is going to be? It's a good and meaningful song :)
DUDE! Thank you! This is always what I thought he meant with those lyrics and I never saw that video of him saying that. So it feels good that I was right
@BigPapiMatt I think it's him asking God. Maybe even on his death bed? Platform of surrender, My hands are cold, and my signs are vital. Wave goodbye wish me well
“I guess it bothers people that it's not grammatically correct, but I think I'm allowed to do whatever I want. 'Denser'? I hadn't heard that one. I don't like 'denser.'" - Brandon Flowers (actual quote from an interview with Gigwise)
Lyrics are a form of poetry in a sense, and words mean different things to different people. So whether Brandon intended it to be dancer, or denser, it doesn't matter :) Whatever word makes more sense to you, or touches your heart more, that's all that matters. :)
Personally, I think Denser would imply stupidity or lack of awareness. I also think Dancer is a better choice because it implicate that we live our lives on predetermined steps, like choreography. "Cut the Cord" supports that something external is driving our direction, like a puppeteer.

On wiki, here is the official answer: On the band's official website, the biography section states that Flowers is singing "Are we human, or are we dancer?" and also says that the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers".[12][13] In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flowers said that he was irritated over the confusion about the lyrics and also that fans were unhappy with the song's dance beat: "It's supposed to be a dance song, [the beat] goes with the chorus...If you can't put that together, you're an idiot. I just don't get why there's a confusion about it." Is this the final answer? What Hunter Thompson's dancers meant was now in US people are all dancing according to the social norm, powerful political, commercial propaganda and programming: In the song "Human" one of the lines is "Some times I get nervous when I see an open door". By this he meant that he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him, because living in the US has made us all afraid to go against what we've thought for all our lives. So it asked the question: are we still original human to take the adventure or just a bunch of robot dancer to the controller's music.
It's dancer NOT denser ... Straight from Wikipedia: There remains confusion and debate over the line "Are we human, or are we dancer?" in the song's chorus due to its grammar.[9] Debate raged across the Internet over whether the lyric said "dancer", "dancers" or "denser", a misunderstanding which elicited conflicting interpretations of the song's meaning.[10][11] On the band's official website, the biography section states that Flowers is singing "Are we human, or are we dancer?" and also says that the lyric was inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers".[12][13] In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flowers said that he was irritated over the confusion about the lyric and also that fans were unhappy with the song's dance beat: "It's supposed to be a dance song, [the beat] goes with the chorus...If you can't put that together, you're an idiot. I just don't get why there's a confusion about it."[14] ... Thank you and goodnight!!!
It's actually a quote from Hunter S Thompson, referring to how humans are merely dents in the fabric of the universe, and he thinks we should apologize for being such a nuisance
The original lyric is truly "dancer." It was inspired by a comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers." To change the lyric to "denser" changes the whole meaning of the song. In my eyes, "are we human or are we dancer?" is asking: Are we individuals with our own purposes, or are we following the crowd and becoming one giant mass of people who move similarly, like dancers do?
Why hasn't the uploader fixed this yet? Is he human...?

On wiki, here is the official answer:
On the band's official website, the biography section states that Flowers is singing "Are we human, or are we dancer?" and also says that the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers".[12][13]
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flowers said that he was irritated over the confusion about the lyrics and also that fans were unhappy with the song's dance beat: "It's supposed to be a dance song, [the beat] goes with the chorus...If you can't put that together, you're an idiot. I just don't get why there's a confusion about it."
Is this the final answer? What Hunter Thompson's dancers meant
was now in US people are all dancing according to the social norm, powerful political, commercial propaganda and programming: In the song "Human" one of the lines is "Some times I get nervous when I see an open door". By this he meant that he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him, because living in the US has made us all afraid to go against what we've thought for all our lives. So it asked the question: are we still original human to take the adventure or just a bunch of robot dancer to the controller's music.
That is the explanion i was looking for! Thank you very much!
More people need to see this comment
Thank you, a good explanation :)
It's a good explanation, no doubt, but I like denser.
I once played this song 7 straight times at a packed bar. Everyone loved it.
Not gonna forget a single memory about how I felt listening to this song THERE!❤️
I came here expecting a debate on denser and dancers... I was not disappointed.

It's dancer NOT denser
...
Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers".[12][13]

Thank you and goodnight!!!
It's actually a quote from Hunter S Thompson, referring to how humans are merely dents in the fabric of the universe, and he thinks we should apologize for being such a nuisance
Either way, it's still dancer which was what I was trying to clarify
yah i know it's dancer it wouldn't make
sense if it was denser
evan smith Without the explanation neither of them would make sense haha
lol yah
Just did Magic Mushrooms last night... I decided this was a good choice of song to start my new perspective on life.

Are we Human, or are we dentists!

LOL.....XD
And I'm on the bed, waiting for the filling
James Mack yay that prolly whhatt it says
What is he really saying? Danser? Denser?
The original lyric is truly "dancer." It was inspired by a comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated America was raising "a generation of dancers." To change the lyric to "denser" changes the whole meaning of the song. In my eyes, "are we human or are we dancer?" is asking: Are we individuals with our own purposes, or are we following the crowd and becoming one giant mass of people who move similarly, like dancers do?
I find it rather amusing that so many people care whether it's dancer or denser , it's just a great song.
