That's cause Kyle and Beck wrote this! If you like this, you should watch the RUclips channel that landed them on SNL in the first place, it's called GoodNeighborStuff, I think
The fact that they filmed one of these skits with Larry David, who is arguably the King of anti-formula in TV show writing, makes this whole thing that more special.
The fact that he's also an older, bald man playing a young cousin "CJ", hahaha. Seems like a reference to all those shows where the "teenagers" were played by late 20's/early 30's actors.
Nothing but love for LD, but I'd actually argue that he does follow a formula to some extent, though it's admittedly his own flavor of formula. After 10+ seasons of his show, new episodes start to get fairly predictable once they reach the halfway point. But still top-tier television!
I know, he was the perfect person to do this with. I think most people that see this don't realize how intricate all of the satire is so they think it's just garbage. I actually love the fact that it makes people so confused haha
Don't forget: Larry David was once a cast member on "Fridays", ABC's early 1980s ripoff of Saturday Night Live that was ruder, cruder, and more subversive than SNL at the time and did a lot of sketches that defied formula, like that restaurant sketch that ended with Andy Kaufman beating up either Jack Burns or Michael Richards (the whole thing was a prank, but only a few people were in on it) all because Kaufman didn't want to smoke weed during the sketch.
