Now we're like 'Captain Kirk', instant communicators, fun, but still "NOPE", not interested. I walk into the break room at lunch, everyone's head down, earplugs in, staring at this device....NOPE! I grew up in Brantford Ontario Canada where Alexander Graham Bell made his first long distance phone call from Brantford ON to Paris ON. Close by today's standards but far back then. Paris ON is about 8 miles or 13km away from Brantford ON. Our local newspaper, the Brantford Expositor publishes letters from Alexander and his wife Mabel Bell (Nee: Mabel Gardiner Hubbard) from the Bell Museum and Homestead telling about the tale of the phone regularly and makes for an interesting read. Life was sure different back then.

This reminds me of a similar story that I once read. The man in question was of no great importance, but he had similar views regarding the telephone. After much pleading from his wife to have one installed, he finally let one be placed in the basement. His condition was that he wasn't going to be the one to pay for the service. His wife assured him that she'd take care of it and she did. At first he wouldn't use it at all. Some time later he had heard that a friend (possibly also a coworker) was retiring from his job, and was very worried that the company was forcing him out. His wife asked, "Why don't you call him and find out?" The man grumbled something about the expense. She then asked, "Is your peace of mind worth a nickel?" He reluctantly agreed to use the phone, and learned his friend had made the decision to retire. Afterwards he said, "The telephone is a very remarkable invention, I never said it wasn't."
I believe I read this story in an old Reader's Digest collection. This is a bit condensed, however I'm surprised I remembered this much.

I hate cell phones. I am one of the few people in the whole world that has no cell phone. I choose to enjoy life. I watch the trees change colors, not look at some one's picture of a tree. I watch storm clouds coming, not take pictures of it. When I was a kid, we used to fight over the telephone. Not who was going to get it first, but who had to go answer it. We enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the neighbors go by, kids playing, kites being flown, etc. People don't seem to do that anymore. They are too busy on their cell phones. I don't remember a conversation I had except for my wife or a few neighbors in the last few weeks. Sad isn't it?

When cell phones first came out, or shortly thereafter, my friends and workmates would poke fun, unbeknownst to the wearer, of the men who wore them on their belt. Soon after, we'd see men wearing two cell phones. The comments would be something like, "Mister big shot so important, he has to have two." Again, not out loud, but to ourselves, these comments were made. Soon after, my friends and I found ourselves sporting a cell phone on our hip. The fecituos remarks ceased. Within six months of the purchase of my personal phone, my job required I wear one. Often, they rang at the same time. Tethered, bummer.😢

I can understand that. I went to Paris about a decade ago and could only speak enough French to find food, my motel, and the restroom. I was on the Metro (subway) when it stopped at a station. The station I was going to was a couple more stations away. The announcer came over the p.a. and said something in French which I could not understand. I noticed a lot of people getting off of the train, but that was normal at each stop. I didn't notice that no one was getting on. Finally, someone came up to me and started speaking in French. The only thing I knew to say was "parley vous anglais?" (Do you speak English). The guy laughed and explained that there was something blocking the track and we would have to disembark the train here. I don't know how long I would've waited. hahaha. :)

, Bell invented the telephone at about the same time some other guy was working on it and the other guy claimed that he invented it first and bell went to court with him and there was a big lawsuit too, the telephone was the biggest pain in the ass there ever was for Alexander Graham Bell he won that court case and they had to give him a lot of stuff more telephones but from another company called Western Union. If he hated the telephones it was for that very same reason having to go to court working all the time line working on it with his friends having to go to court working on it. He accidentally figured out how to make a speaker when he dropped wire or something into a glass of water or lemonade anyway have a nice day

I don't hate telephones, in my own perverse way I delight in their s.slowly diminishing screams of anguish as I ignore another plea to extend my car warranty or purchase Medicare Advantage.

Two things would totally throw todays generation for a loop , force them to cursive write without a cell phone nearby and two , force them to drive a clutch or walk , they’d be absolutely lost

Well I think that this is a strange thing. The matter is that your grandfather and your mommy and daddy didn't teach you to stay long enough at the right message on the cell phone. Now I would have to say. Sir if they had discerning judgment as far as what is available on the cell phone. And when you come out of your hermit cell and take on a puppy for a 2 days and the neighbor doesn't come back to get it you get blamed for abandoning an animal
So watch out for your neighbors. In the correct way. Are watch out for your neighbors to go down because of your insolence and black of trust and faith
Moving forward with you and your family.

Cute story but not very believable. Since his wife was deaf it seems far fetched that she could have used the phone and probably a stretch to believe that she gave him advice or meeting with people! Paul just liked to make money telling fanciful stories!

Paul Harvey Aurandt Jr., the author and creator of "The Rest of the Story" made some mistakes. There's no doubt about it. We have to remember that when most of these were written, there was no internet. Even when the internet was available, no one in Mr. Harvey's family used them. I've researched Mr. Harvey and his stories for years and have found only a handful of mistakes, which is very impressive considering how "Young Paul" had to do research. :)
