That is a great outcome for GM, well done. - The AI seemed confused in this battle, he is usually a lot more aggressive, both in pushing across the river and also attacking the last objective. - If the union units fall back a little, the the CS units will advance into the water and take double damage. The down side of that tactic is that the AI might launch every unit into an immediate all-out attack. That can be dangerous on Legendary. If it goes well then the union can double the CSA losses, but if it goes badly then the Union will take a lot of losses and be hard-pressed to get a victory. - Good luck at MH.
A day with out HG’s UGCW is like a day without sunshine, sad. Thank you Chris! As I have said before I have been following you for a very long time. I have watched other Utubers play UGCW and watch again some of your early stuff. Mate you are at the top of your game now in both production quality and especially how you command your troops on the field. I really feel the no infantry challenge has set you up well. You did really well with this battle, one can always review any event after the fact and pick points to improve on. But in this case at no stage did you ever look in trouble with losing an objective. You had a plan, executed the plan and achieve a crushing victory up against a vast battle field and heavily out numbered. Well done! As always eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
I appreciate all the kind words George. I definitely would not be where I am if not for all the great feedback from viewers like yourself. Glad to have you along for the ride.
Princess of Wales was in a stream almost the whole way through. All in all you made this work, but if you had just backed up 20 yards and not let them engage you from cover it would have forced them into the river where your volleys would cause twice the damage. Good victory though for sure.
Very interesting strategy. Just got this game for Christmas, and I love it, and love your play through. I have to say that Gaines’s mill for me (played on Brigadier General), turned out very much different for me. I had an army of about 40,000, and deployed skirmishes forward to hold off the main Confederate advance while reinforcements and my brigades reached Boatswain woods. I was expecting my skirmishers would not hold at all, but I held them in the wood along the creek and they held amazingly against the confederate advance, long enough for me to fortify my position. By the time reinforcements arrived, I had held multiple failed confederate advances. It was amazing to me, though maybe not to people who have played this game more.
Thanks! I'm just starting this battle on my other screen. The first few days I had this game I clocked 23 hours, I love it. But i've been procrastinating this battle as I see i'm greatly outnumbered, I thought I made a mistake while upgrading my stats (as in, maybe I should have made it so that I can have 2000 units vs 1500 but instead i used it on something else). But after watching your intro I realize its just supposed to be a tough battle. Awesome. Luckily i'm not as outgunned as you. I'm on a lower difficulty i have 20K vs his 32K. I'll finish the video after I play my battle, I don't want to spoil any surprises. Thanks!!!
The river strategy is unbeatable. It's like you could have faced 80,000 and held them. The flank attack was nothing at all which is a bit odd. One isolated rebel brigade that was cannon fodder for cav. I usually placed sniper skirms on the flanks of the river line as they have far better range than infantry there and eat into the enemy flank when they try and cross en masse. Having some skirms go into the woods on the left is good to harass him and distract his guns but he spawns units there too so they can be cut off if you aren't microing them.
Great WIn a few pointers don't have troops in the river whatever you do as compass said you get a negative penalty while touching the waterfront. You still need snipers on your flanks snipers at the top of that hill would have been good! also notice because your 24 pounders were literally at the front lines they had a huge day! If you have 3 or 4 of those units positioned exactly like you did here not too far back from the main lines they tear apart the enemy troops... also some thing to consider use a skirmisher to go off on recon behind enemy lines to snag supplies early in the battle using tree cover to hide then poping out jsut after contact is made to harass cannons and take supplies if you use 2 skirmishers like this you can cause some serious damage behind enemy lines... ALL AND ALL very good job!
i like to detach 2-3 skirmishers and use them on that far left side where you kept your two but to hide them in the woods and then try to take out cannons from behind once the battle gets going
Yeah the first time I got here on even the Major General difficulty the main position is quite hard to defend when outnumbered by so many. The river strategy is the best, as others have pointed out you could have added more to their casualty counts as well as protected some of your brigades a little better had you backed up slightly and forced them to have to go into the water to shoot at you. The only other thing you could have tried which would have been high risk/high reward would have been to have a couple more skirmishers or even one of the lesser engaged brigades go across the river at the start of their attack to hit their flanks a little bit more.
An impressive and masterful defence it was a bit ugly at the gitgo however youve manage to outdo or outpour the enemy with massive volley of firepower.I love how you pull some of your skirmirshes with the intent of either ambushing or denying them with their objectives.
Having just done this battle on the same difficulty I think defending at the 2nd tree line behind the river is a far better option. The enemy has too much tree over on their side of the river and the engagements ending up being too even.
Wolverines getting canister to the face :( If you pulled back a little bit and let them come into the water I think you would have gotten a better kill ratio. Good win!
did they overhaul the game or is it because im only playing on myjor gen diff without legendary on that i get a shit ton of small elite units trown at me , banzai charging my lines to shit with 4/5 wave right after each other ? :D
How did you get to start with so many men? I have maybe half of that (eight regiments). I have won every single battle and with the exception of Shiloh, where I lost the majority of the army, yet won the day, my k/d ratio has been fairly good, so how is it possible for you to field so many troops?
@@TheHistoryGuy So one mistake can pretty much screw up your entire game? I must admit that I was quite annoyed with the lack of "inteligence" you get before you start the battle. I had been fine with the amount of ammo I had, but suddenly, I needed 5 times as much as I had before. The only reason why I lost so many men. Anyway, I suppose I could still play Gaines Mill, send all my soldiers away from the front and accept the defeat. If I do this, would you reckon that I would be at such a disadvantage that I couldn't go on to win later battles, or would it makes sense to accept my losses and save my army (to get the momentum to rebuild my army)
Why did you park your battle line out of the trees? I get that you wanted to catch the Confederates in the open, but I would have thought that putting your men in solid cover where the Confederates have to cross the open ground to get to the creek would have been better than setting up in the open to try to catch the Confederates in the creek itself?

not having a go. reasonable comment . But difference between at the time operational decision and hindsight.
Savage Snayle I always say, even Stevie Wonder has 20/20 hindsight.

It appears about a +25% bonus to protection by being in a treeline, maybe a little more.

Put your rep points into medicine. You get more men back in the ranks automatically.
Nice...late comment, but a nice game
Is it wise to consolidate alot of artillery into one unit? Say 20 guns?
My understanding is that larger batteries lose effectiveness in a number of key areas. 12 seems to be the way to go.
@@TheHistoryGuy Thank you..

Probably because of your losses at Shiloh.

taccovert4 if the AI is stuck in the creek they take nearly double the damage.
