I'm a 52 year old Brand New Potter and have watched a ton of videos recently, but yours is The Best instructional video I have seen!!! I am saving it to my favorites and am so excited to have a new teacher!!
This is seriously so impressive! I wish I'd had an art teacher like you when I was in high school. Thanks for making these videos, they are so inspiring!
I am thrilled that you were inspired and even more thrilled (if it's possible) that you left a public message singing my praises, hahahaha. But seriously, thanks for taking the time to watch it and to message me. It really means a lot!
Oh what I would have given to have a class like this--with a teacher like you--in high school! Well, 40+ years later, thanks to the wonders of technology I'm getting that opportunity. And you are an incredibly talented and entertaining artist and teacher. Hope your students know how lucky they are to learn from you!
What a pleasure to watch! I’m a retired art dealer and beginner quarantine potter, and love finding videos to learn from. Yours are wonderful! You are so clear, encouraging, forgiving, and fun. Your students will appreciate you someday if not already. I’m all fired up to try this now. Many thanks and please keep making videos.
@LauraMG123 What a happy message to wake up to! I'm so glad you're getting some inspiration, especially during these times. If you are ever interested in zooming with my students to talk about being an art dealer, let me know! We would love to hear and learn all about your career!! Thanks for watching!
@@MissLinneaLark I'd be happy to zoom - My family started a gallery in 1960 and my husband and I sold it in 2015 and moved to Baja California. It was a wonderful, challenging career and my favorite part was getting to work with the artists.
@@lauramg1232 thank you thank you! Would you be willing to find me on Instagram or Facebook and message me so we can connect? Or if you prefer you could leave a link to your Instagram or Facebook and I can message you? Thank you so much!
Wonderful video! I love that you reinforce using multiple references in this video. It's def a step some artists like to step over. Thank you for making this video again : )
Great video, the piece turned out beautifully. I'm sure you've made impression stamps of ornamental elements for your clay? Versatile little things. I miss teaching sculpting classes here in Ireland, and seeing the delight on the faces of participants learning something new. Plus, bas relief is always a pleasure to get immersed in 👍. In this age of "virtual" experiences, the practical and hands-on nature of sculpting and pottery are even more relevant and satisfying.
Thanks Declan. Teaching brings me so much joy. 💕 The kids discovery and growth over the 4 years I teach them is truly a special thing to witness! And you are right, these kids need some non digital outlets for their creativity. I haven’t made stamps in years. But maybe it’s time to circle back to stamps. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and write a message! It’s delightful to discuss education and creativity with a kindred spirit across the sea! 🌞
At 1:49 , 'the fantasy of a virtuous leader in late 2019', hahaha. You got me at 'you know what I'm saying ' ... hahaha, and just like that, I'm a fan!! And I hadn't even seen the rest of the video yet! 😂 Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain in so much detail. Exactly what I needed as I start out on relief carving my mugs, to see the mistakes I made. (I promise not to leave any lines behind! 🙂)
Hello, I am an art teacher. I love the sheet you created for your students to use to think about their project. I teach elementary, but I teach full personalized learning and that would be perfect for my 6th graders to use when deciding on their projects. I would love to get a copy of that!
Hello Angela. I’m so glad you can use it. Here’s a link to a free download: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Creativity-Brainstorming-Worksheet-4882118
Absolutely incredible work with details. I like the way you explain in the video. Wish you taught here in Dubai. I would join your class / school to learn & use all the technics. So impressed & have liked saved & subscribed today. 👌👌👍👍
FYI I took your teachings for making a new design by looking at multiple existing designs and made a new angel relief (so my own unique design). If I am still able to leave items at the memorial (they are supposed to be doing construction on it soon if not already) that I left my last plaque at then I am going to make this design into a plaque using concrete. The memorial is an hour away so probably won't be going by there until sometime next month. I just wanted to let you know that again I am using your teachings to help me create designs and items.
Thanks Ian! I believe I worked on it for 2+ months... but for prolly about 2-4 hours a day (M-F). You prolly can't tell in the videos but I make art while my students are working. So my work is halted often. When kids have questions or I am teaching a class I cannot carve/make. I never have uninterrupted work flow, so I might not be the best judge for how long something takes! The little tile of scales took me 30 minutes, but it is very rough and still needs to be cleaned up, so.... I hope that helps! The beauty of carving is doing it for peace. Having repetitive, slow movements seems to put my mind at ease as long as I dwell on positivity. For me it is exciting to do tedious work and so I LOVE carving! :D
Love your video. So much info on carving relief. Can you tell me the name of your green handle tool please and where you bought it? I know why you speed up the video, but I would love to see the carving in regular time. Truly hope to see more relief projects from you. Thank you, Glynne
I was thinking about putting out a real time video... It's just that when I put all the footage in there and sped it up 20xs, it was 20 hours long still. I'll have to pick and choose areas. I'll make the video but it won't be edited great... and I stop and start a lot because I teach at the same time... but I'll do something! Thanks for the interest. Here is the BEST clay tool kit I have ever used, enjoy: www.aliexpress.com/item/32961091809.html
I will be making a video on the glazing soon! And I think it was a flattened juice box/bag thing in her mouth :D It was bitter sweat editing video footage with students in the classroom and without masks on! That last shot is my favorite. And when I was filming it I told them they would be in the video if they didn't move for a second, but that at least they were out of focus. They said they wanted to be in the video but only if I put them in focus and my pot out of focus, LOL! I miss seeing my students
So glad! We use “Spirit White” clay. Is a low fire clay with lots of really fine grog. This makes is a good hybrid for sculpture and wheel throwing. We get it in bulk at a local clay manufacturer.
Hi - I asked this on IG, so you can ignore me there! You start with the background by cutting under the "furthest" section first. But if you have a lot of background, is all of the background carved so it is the same level? I always carve away and then try to smooth out the background section I carved with the rest of the piece that won't be carved and it's a mess!! Thanks - I hope I was somewhat clear!! You are a really good teacher!
That is a great question. I actually don’t carve the entire background all the way back on a large pot. On the little scale tile it makes sense but on the large pot I carve deeply around an object and then gradually ease up until I’m back to the surface level. It’s like the scales being carved at a diagonal angle. It kinda makes for an optical illusion. Hope that makes sense.
You are correct, so you’ll have to skip the undercuts, which will be a little less dynamic. But that’s okay. And worth it to be able to maximize on all the carving!
Do you have any specific websites that you recommend sending high school students to conduct research on myths? Two thumbs up for this lesson, it is phenomenal!!!
Thanks Stacey! I send them to google and encourage them to find the story on at least 2 different sites so they can compare. I also share this youtube channel by PBS: ruclips.net/channel/UCO6nDCimkF79NZRRb8YiDcA
I made a relief carving into wood that I will be leaving at a public memorial for victims that were killing by a shooter some years ago.
