      AMEN to that ! I had taken our RAV4 to the Toyota dealer for a complimentary oil change and tire rotation . When I got into the car to go home I thought no more about it. 3 months later I was getting ready to take the RAV to my friendly neighborhood shop for state inspection and I was getting everything gathered up for the drop off . Found all the paperwork and everything except for the wheel lock KEY . Turns out that we had been driving around for months without the ability to remove a flat & change it without knowing. Someone at the dealership had not returned them to our car . Lesson learned. I had the wheel locks removed and chucked them out. Our mechanic reminded me of how useless they are if a thief really wants your tires and wheels . His special tool had them off in SECONDS.

    I’ve been a tow truck operator for 35 years. There was never any doubt, that every flat tire I changed had a flat spare tire. Back in the day we had the air caddy, but that was hit or miss of holding air or even enough to fill the spare. The trucks of the past 20 or so years, have air brakes so we can tap into the air tanks with a coupler and have air hoses. Much better these days. Now it’s getting to a car that hasn’t had a hub cap on it for 10 years and the lugs come off a quarter turn at a time. And no one has the Jack tools anyway. Previous owners or dealer takes them out or something. Also, the locking lug tool. Good luck finding that. Oh, I can go on and on. And that’s just on the subject of a flat tire.

    I bought an old truck that's a work in progress. Decided to drive it for the holiday weekend. First thing I did before going anywhere was take the tire inflator and jump starter from my other truck, charge the starter and put both in my new-old truck. I had a tool kit under the back seat of the newer truck, and it went in the truck I was driving. A fuel can and an empty 1 gal. windhield washer fluid container went in the bed. All the things that I didn't have spares of, I ordered new ones to give my daily driver an update.
    My jump starter has USB ports, and I added universal cables for phones and other devices. But because it's so cheap, I got another USB adapter for the lighter socket, and more cables that I had spare. It may seem like overkill, but when I drove home at night in a truck with no GPS display, I realized how dependent on GPS navigation I had become. And that my only paper map of the area was in the kitchen drawer at home. I had forgotten to charge my phone before leaving, so having the ability to charge en route meant having a working phone later that night.
    If you thought to yourself "I have a late model car, I don't need to worry" think again. While in-car GPS was briefly a thing, most new cars rely totally on your phone's GPS radio and map data. If the phone battery dies, you're out of luck. Same with calling.

    I bought a used 95 Lincoln Mark VIII in 97 from the Lincoln dealer. Several years later, I had a flat on the road and found out the spare wheel didn't have the correct lug pattern for my car. I had to call a tow truck and was lucky enough that the tow truck owner had a tire shop and installed a new tire on my rim. The flat rear tire shredded before I knew it was failing due to the air suspension keeping the car level and the stereo being turned up.

    I bought a can once, on special, and actually used it on my sister's car, as it did not come from factory with a spare. Now she has a working spare, and the can got her through a month of not being able to get to fix the flat. Did check my spare tyre, and yes it was flat, but you have to remove it from the boot to check it. Also with that spare under the car, please take a can of dry chain lube, and spray on the threads of that stud, so it can actually come loose off there when needed. Dry lube, so it does not attract dust and become a dust block. Same for the jack, as they do not come with much lube from the factory, so spray with brake clean, and get the grease off, and spray with chain lube, and run end to end, plus on the bearings and pivots, and then wrap in a cloth, sprayed with a thin coat on the inside, to both protect from rattles, and to provide you with a cloth to clean your hands when changing.
    Yes have had the pleasure of getting the spare off, using a hacksaw blade, on the side of a highway, because the steel bolt rusted fast to the nut. Fixed that the next day, stainless steel bolt, and a loose fitting nut, with a nice coat of molyslip between then in the threads, and a split pin to prevent the nut coming off. Was a tank hold down bolt, but 10 minutes with a grinder and a welder, to make a plate that was used to fix to the trailer chassis, and it never gave any issues ever again. Worst came to the worst use a shifter and pliers to undo the 2 M8 bolts that held it down, and slip through the centre hole. Next time I had to change it, again on side of freeway, after finding a nail I assume (only had the sidewalls left, after the middle shredded itself off, actually same spot I twice had to dodge a Hiace half shaft and wheel assembly complete, as it came past me) it was so easy to undo, jack up with the jack, and get the bolts off the trailer wheel.
    Tip as well, lube the threads on the wheel fasteners, light coat works, and use a torque wrench to put them on, not Cletus and turn till it half way snaps. Impact driver to put them on means you never get them off with the socket in the car kit.

    I Believe the reason they mount the spare with the front of the wheel up is so the surface of the wheel that will contact the hub doesn't collect road dirt of mud.

    • @ranger178
      @ranger178 8 месяцев назад

      either side can collect dirt if you drive down a muddy or dusty road, I think they want you to take car into dealer to get it checked.

    • @sdsmech
      @sdsmech 8 месяцев назад

      @@ranger178 why would you have to take it to a dealer to be checked? Because the top of the rim is up? What would be stopping you? No special tool or equipment that they do not give you with the car to do drop it to check it. If the mounting surface of the wheel has debris caked to it the wheel wouldn't tighten correctly and will fall off while driving if not properly cleaned. Some people wouldn't know or notice before putting the wheel on.. We live in a world where a hot coffee cup has to say "contents are hot". Most spare tires that I had removed from the underneath of a vehicle had plenty of crap stuck on the face of the wheel that was situated up, that needed to be cleaned off before installing and next to none on the side that was down.

    Each vehicle has it's own tool kit; any tool used on that vehicle stays with it. Any tool foresee possibly needing is there too. Also a handful of odd nuts/ bolts/ screws/ wire/ ty-wraps because sometimes things fall apart. Test meter (cheap will do for roadside), Haynes or Chilton's book, jumper cables, tow-strap, extra oil/ trans fluid/ coolant. Flashlights, extra batteries, gloves, and a rainsuit. If the car is a 'keeper' I'll buy an extra engine gaslet set and I save any good parts I replaced early likehioses, belts, and a couple spark plugs and wires. And of course tire changing tools, plus a cheap Harbor Frieght 12V compressor which will last 1-2 uses and plugs. Today's "no spare' cars are nuts, the low-profile tires very prone to being gashed irreparably on curbs and potholes. Plenty of paces in the hills around here where phones don't work, plenty of time's I've been a long way from help, I rely on me first.

    I have to get a replacement lug wrench. My spare tire is probably dry rotted it’s been at least six months since I needed to use it for an emergency last place I got my oil changed I got a flat tire about two blocks away. Which was either the construction site next door or something else when I left. I’m hoping that oil change wasn’t forgetting to check it out. Oil and lube $278 for my 7.3 f250, and they wanted me to return in 3,000 miles. I’m going back right after I find a less expensive place. I know everything has been going up but almost $300 for oil and lube?

    they mount upside down so debris and mud water do not fill it up and rust out the rim especially for us in northern climates and dirt roads etc i know its inconvenient . most cars now do not even have a spare tire they have a fix a flat kit and a card for roadside . some US spec cars though still have the cavity for the spare or the provisions to add the tire carrier after the fact . im pretty confident that in your country due to insurance it will soon be illegal to attempt a tire change on rhe highway and to call a tow truck and spend 100s on a minor issue thats just how i feel about what the industry is doing to appease california regulations we saw it with our plastic junk engines with super super tight tollerances that eat themself we saw it with GM and Dodge V8 piston deactivation chewing up timing all to appease california regulations and really have not gained anything my 1993 voyager AWD got the exact same fuel mileage as my 2018 Journey AWD in real life and so on so forth maybe trucks you could make an argument because of the turbo charging baby V6s and huge 4Cyl but not really my 09 Ram got the same mileage as my 14 F150 . but in an attempt to reduce weight and juice mileage numbers on paper they removed spare tires and added plastic and removed cylinders have we benefited ? is it more environmentallly friendly to trash a whole car after 10 years instead of that car lasting 20 30 years does any if at all gas savings balance out that equation ? because im seeing a shittt load of 2010+ vehicles filling junk yards with no damage but seized engines and failed CVT transmissions are plentiful i do not remember seeing so many relatively new models in junk yards back in 2000s unless they were smashed or heavily abused . rant over . sorry . i just realllly hate hate hate how my vehicles in Canada are built to meet one states standards with no benefit to me only negatives and the environment will feel it all the extra shit cars being scrapped we will see the effects of these decisions in the short future lets not even discuss how we are trading spare tires and 2 more cylinders (same fuel economy) for added modules and miles of copper wire which add weight as well just look at a Limited vs XLT cargo capacity sticker all that extra junk adds weight and complexity but nothing to the reliability or drivability of a vehicle . sorry sorry rant is over haha.

    my BIL was mad. Got a flat. Couldn't find the spare. (it was an Infiniti fx35 with yuge oversize rims, he didn't know it had a space-saver spare in the trunk with a Subwoofer nested inside it)
    Also, he isn;t much of a reader, so that Bible-Sized Book Infinti packages in every ride was useless.
    I saw the Infiniti work order on the bench in his garage later. (Customer can't find spare) lol.
    Hilarious.

    • @stuartlockwood9645
      @stuartlockwood9645 8 месяцев назад

      Hi the psi is usually marked on the centre of the wheel rim ,along whith maximum speed of 50mph, at least here in the UK. My space saver wheel also has the max psi on the sidewall of the tyre. You could Google for information, or visit your local tyre shop and they should be able to help you, hope this helps. Stuart Uk.

    i have never seen a car with the tire in trunk or underneath where they put it in with valve stem where you can get at it some of them the bracket only fits wheel with valve stem inaccessible is this a conspiracy by car manufacturers to get you to take car to dealer or what?
