Hip to be Square is what got me hooked on Huey and the News. It's my all-time favorite song of theirs. Thanks for the interview Professor! We would never have heard the stories behind the music back in the 80's/90's if not for the Internet....well maybe a written article in Billboard or Rolling Stones Mag. But I agree 100% with you, there was an excitement about the release of new music from your favorite artist back then that you just don't find today.

"I Want a New Drug" is such a classic '80s hit, there's just something about that song that never gets old it sounds as fresh today as it did almost four decades ago. The convenience of the Internet and streaming though cuts out this middle section of life that used to be there; the adventure of discovering new songs and the sometimes long personal road to finally owning them that part is missing today, so music unavoidably has a different status and meaning to many people. It's instant now thus also instantly forgettable and disposable, it doesn't follow people's lives around in the same ways anymore. I doubt current big chart hits will be remembered much in 50 years too samey even regardless of the genres, they'll be numbers and statistics in a sea of similar sounding kiddie pop that's it. Not only did convenient technology kill off some of the fun, it strangely enough also murdered the talent mass behind the music so there's just less good stuff coming out.

Great to see Huey in the flesh. Saw this band sooo many times. In the 90's, in Virginia Beach, he ha a show scheduled. Unfortunately, there was a hurricane scheduled to show up too. Hurricane took a turn. They literally called one of the rock stations "we're on the way". They picked up Bruce Hornsbey in Williamsburg and kept it going for about 5 hours. Amazing.

In 1983, Huey Lewis was in
an independent film called "Short Cuts".
The multiple storyline plot was epic
& the ensemble cast was massive.
    Lewis found himself working in
    the company of classic stars,
such as Fred Ward & Buck Henry.
Other stars (or stars-to-be) in the film
include Julianne Moore, Robert Downey, Jr.,
    Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Robbins,
Frances McDormand & even Lyle Lovett.
There's also a cameo by the late,
    great Alex Trebek as himself.

    1986-ish.
I’m at a record store in the mall trying to figure out what I’m going to spend my money on.
I was a sophomore in high school.
A couple of popular jock-type seniors come in and for some reason acknowledge my presence.
We start talking about music and I profess my admiration for Phil Collins and Genesis.
One of them recommends “So”, by Peter Gabriel. I bought it. Loved it. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.
You were talking about the digital vs ‘analog’ musical experience...
Cruising a record store that day and talking to a person who probably wouldn’t have given me the time of day under any other circumstance. It gave me an insight into the real person that popular senior actually was and we made a brief connection. A moment I’ll never forget, made possible by music.

I remember getting together with my buddies (or by myself) and making a run to Tower Records, Sam Goody, Licorice Pizza or later the Wherehouse (along with many other little mom and pop record stores) and getting the latest release of your favorite artists, or getting another you always wanted. Heck, if you were lucky you may even meet and talk to a girl or two about music which may or may not have led to a date. Such great memories with those trips...... I always think of Ducky dancing around the record store that Andie worked at in Pretty in Pink....just kind of epitomized kids hanging out at the record stores and just loving music.

Memories of my childhood, sitting in front of my sound system with the radio on, listening to John Peel and waiting for the right song to come on so I could hit record and lay down the next song on my new long play tape. Doing last-minute mental arithmetic to make sure I had enough space left on side one to cram it in before frantically flipping the tape in case I got back-to-back awesome on the waves (I missed that slot more than once).....it is impossible to explain this to my girls, they grew up in the digital age where things like Spotify and iTunes dominate the landscape and everything is on demand. We have lost some of that magic, the longing and the anticipation. Thing is, the music still has all that power, it still speaks to people and pulls at the deepest parts of the soul. It still makes people NEED to get up and dance, or to sit down and cry. We may have lost some of that youthful naivete and wonder, but the magic persits. At least, I think it does, and honestly, that's all that matters to me.

First of all, thank you for all videos, for this channel. Thank you a lot.
Second, me, like you, I love him, I love them as a band too. I was only 10 years old at the time of "Do you believe in love? " 1982. Then at the time of SPORTS I was already a big fan. Then later at 1986 "Fore!" I was so much fan, the video clip of the song "Stuck with you " was my favorite video of all videos ( back in the day, it was almost impossible to have a favorite video, because we did love so many artists, so many bands, every single week was an adventure ... in music, finding new songs, new band ..... ) .
At school, my school, some girls were older than me and when they asked me, from all singers, all solo or bands, " which one is your favorite ? " and me in a naive kind way , I used to say Huey Lewis and then if they asked me " Who ? " straight away I would show them a little poster in my school book. And then, well, after a few times that kind of inquiries, I realize I had to lie and start saying that I love much more George Michael, or Nik Kershaw, Bryan Adam's ( and I did, just not as much as Huey Lewis ), and why I on earth I had to hide it ? Because the girls older than me kept saying, are you stupid.... that guy is way older than the other musicians, the other singers, lead singers, artists ..... and as a teenager I choose to keep all that love, that crush, all that loving for his songs, his voice, for him and his down to earth smile, look, way. Well, so, among the school colleagues, friends and family I was the only one that put him on the level of kind of God on earth.
My dad had a little truck back then, as well as in your dad, as curious coincidence. I used to listen to the radio. Huey had fans all over the world, in countries that english language was back then the same as chinese. Now everything is complete different. I do remember to understand almost one word or two in each song. If so !

When he got to the part in the anthem: "And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night...", I instantly jumped in, in tune and without missing a beat: "THAT IT'S HIP TO BE SQUARE!"
And I'll tell you, my mind had to instantaneously rip through Huey's catalog to come up with that one line to fit perfectly into the anthem like that. My girlfriend was totally impressed.

Streaming? Ya, ok. Nothing compares with the feeling of unwrapping a new album, the cover art, the sleeve art, lyrics! And the holy grail was a cover that opened and included even more artwork.

I listen to all types of music but 80's pop has a very special place in my heart. I was raised on 80's pop and Huey Lewis and the News is by far one of my all time favorites. I love this channel and your interviews are always so good. Thank you sir for the great content.

So true Adam. The anticipation. As I listen to your words, I’m remembering going to the local music store with my best friend hoping particular albums were in stock. Sometimes it was and other times there was the disappointment of having to wait another week. But once you had it, tearing off the plastic wrapping was that magical moment!

Love Huey Lewis and the News. I worked for a Big Pharma company for many many years and one year when we were launching a new drug in LA we had Huey come out with the band and sing it for us! Along with a bunch more songs as well of course. It was awesome. Interestingly I was watching an 80’s top 200 countdown back around 2006 or so on VH1. I came in around 150 or so and I was watching and watching and waiting for all the Huey Lewis songs…NOT A ONE! It made me ask what they had against him since he WAS the ‘80’s! Not a single song of his was listed in the top 200 ‘80’s songs by VH1 in that countdown. I never watched their channel again. I figured they didn’t know what they were talking about anyway!

I was 21 years old when "Hip To Be Square" came out. And yes, back then, I was a nerd, and this song was an instant favorite with me.
Here's a bit of trivia about the song: On Billboard/American Top 40's 1987 year-end list of the top songs of the year, in light of the fact that "Hip To Be Square" featured members of the San Francisco 49ers on the record, I found it rather ironic that the song would land at #49 for the year!

Huey has one of the most iconic voices...that raspy, soul filled sound. Then his band and the "Tower of Power"...complete ear pleasure! Their acapella songs are awesome. "I Know What I Like" is one my favorite hidden gems...along with "Naturally". "Back in Time" was rather underplayed...and continues to be such. Huey referred to it as "a party song" during one of the concerts I saw him at. Great video...thanks for keeping all the good music alive Professor!

I would have LOVED to have heard more about the Weird Al Parody. I saw the Weird Al version several years before I saw the American Psycho scene, so I didn’t get it at the time. A few years later on YT, I saw it and suddenly got the joke.

I have heard all of Huey Lewis's hits thousands of times. When I hear the same hits over and over I usually wind up hating them. There are still some 80's songs I hate to this day. But I still love every one of Huey Lewis's hits! His music Jumps! It sings to your soul! It makes your heart pump, and your feet want to dance! As to American Psycho, I have never watched it and never will. I don't watch films that glorify murder and brutality.

Ok, I'll be that guy. No- I don't actively dislike Huey, but the music didn't really resonate with me in the 80's. His tunes were certainly catchy and appropriate for the times, but I just didn't pay attention. Fast forward to a few years ago and I happened to catch "Walking on a Thin Line" on SiriusXM. For whatever reason, I paid attention to the lyrics for once, and they hit me right in the gut. My dad was a Vietnam veteran and lost a lot of his brothers in that war. He suffered similar issues as other vets who came home- physically whole, but emotionally scarred for life. I've gained a new appreciation for his music and always watch interviews of the man- he seems so genuine. Hip to Be Square is just a great pop song- period.

Agree with you on digital music, I will say though the Spotify algorithms have helped me find a couple cool 80s and 90s songs that slipped past me the first time. I was recently introduced to Broken Hearted Savior by Big Head Todd. I don’t know how I missed that track back in the 90s but now it’s one of my favorite “new” songs. Nothing better than finding a new song from your favorite time for music.

With regard to digital music downloads, another major aspect missing is the fact that in the past you bought an album which, in itself, was an art form. Bands, and solo singers, would put a lot of thought into what songs would go into that album and that songs wouldn't, how they would be arranged, what versions of particular songs would be used, etc. When you listen to an album you hear a larger composite piece of art that, when done well, have songs fit like puzzle pieces into a greater picture. All this is lost when you simply download individual songs from a streaming service.
    BTW - Great interview!
