  • Huey Lewis and The News killed it from 1984-1988 with several #1 hits and albums. Coming up I get to interview Huey about one of those massive 80s classic in Hip To Be Square. Huey is one of my favorite artists ever. Hip to Be Square was embraced by the masses as well as one of cinemas most infamous serial killers.. Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. Huey tells the story of writing about hippies becoming yuppies and how he wrote for his own age with the record Fore, which also had the #1 hits Jacob’s Ladder and Stuck With You coming off his other huge #1 from Back to the Future.. the Power of Love. Huey explains the synthesis of Hip to Be Square and How they got NFL Legends like Joe Montana to sing backing vocals coming up next.

Great to see Huey in the flesh. Saw this band sooo many times. In the 90's, in Virginia Beach, he ha a show scheduled. Unfortunately, there was a hurricane scheduled to show up too. Hurricane took a turn. They literally called one of the rock stations "we're on the way". They picked up Bruce Hornsbey in Williamsburg and kept it going for about 5 hours. Amazing.

I'm sure many will praise Huey Lewis and the News here which is well deserved but your comment about digital music ruining certain parts of the experience... you nailed it. I remember getting together with my buddies (or by myself) and making a run to Tower Records, Sam Goody, Licorice Pizza or later the Wherehouse (along with many other little mom and pop record stores) and getting the latest release of your favorite artists, or getting another you always wanted. Heck, if you were lucky you may even meet and talk to a girl or two about music which may or may not have led to a date. Such great memories with those trips...... I always think of Ducky dancing around the record store that Andie worked at in Pretty in Pink....just kind of epitomized kids hanging out at the record stores and just loving music.

& the ensemble cast was massive.
    Lewis found himself working in
    the company of classic stars,
such as Fred Ward & Buck Henry.
Other stars (or stars-to-be) in the film

I came in around 150 or so and I was watching and watching and waiting for all the Huey Lewis songs…NOT A ONE! It made me ask what they had against him since he WAS the ‘80’s! 1986-ish.
I’m at a record store in the mall trying to figure out what I’m going to spend my money on.
I was a sophomore in high school.
A couple of popular jock-type seniors come in and for some reason acknowledge my presence.
We start talking about music and I profess my admiration for Phil Collins and Genesis.
One of them recommends “So”, by Peter Gabriel. I bought it. Loved it. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.
You were talking about the digital vs ‘analog’ musical experience...
Cruising a record store that day and talking to a person who probably wouldn’t have given me the time of day under any other circumstance. It gave me an insight into the real person that popular senior actually was and we made a brief connection. A moment I’ll never forget, made possible by music.

I didn’t know he had Ménière’s disease, I have had it for 22 years now and it really sucks. I was very lucky to have some of the best Doctors for Ménière’s disease only ten minutes away from me.
Unfortunately for me, I had one of the worst cases they had ever seen. Eventually I had to have my left labyrinth removed. I had already had lost all my hearing in that ear so it didn’t have any effects on my hearing. It was at one time my good ear, as I only had 20% hearing in my right ear. Thankfully hearing aid technology has really progressed quite a bit during that time.
My current hearing aid is Bluetooth as well as digital. The sound quality is amazing, and having it stream right into my ear is way better than any earbuds. We have been talking about a Cochlear Implant or BAHA bone conducting hearing aid, but I’ll wait for the technology to improve a bit more before I do it.
As bad as my Ménière’s disease is, I can only imagine how bad it would be for a singer. The tinnitus alone must drive him nuts, then there’s the vertigo and drop attacks. That would make touring difficult, how could you be reliable knowing you could lose all balance at any moment.
Then there’s the traveling, I always found that the air pressure was a trigger for my drop attacks. So getting on a plane can be interesting sometimes. I hope he gets some relief and get his Ménière’s disease under control. I also hope he doesn’t lose any hearing.

Second, me, like you, I love him, I love them as a band too. I was only 10 years old at the time of "Do you believe in love? " 1982. Then at the time of SPORTS I was already a big fan. Then later at 1986 "Fore!" I was so much fan, the video clip of the song "Stuck with you " was my favorite video of all videos ( back in the day, it was almost impossible to have a favorite video, because we did love so many artists, so many bands, every single week was an adventure ... in music, finding new songs, new band ..... ) .
At school, my school, some girls were older than me and when they asked me, from all singers, all solo or bands, " which one is your favorite ? " and me in a naive kind way , I used to say Huey Lewis and then if they asked me " Who ? " straight away I would show them a little poster in my school book. And then, well, after a few times that kind of inquiries, I realize I had to lie and start saying that I love much more George Michael, or Nik Kershaw, Bryan Adam's ( and I did, just not as much as Huey Lewis ), and why I on earth I had to hide it ? Because the girls older than me kept saying, are you stupid.... that guy is way older than the other musicians, the other singers, lead singers, artists ..... and as a teenager I choose to keep all that love, that crush, all that loving for his songs, his voice, for him and his down to earth smile, look, way. Well, so, among the school colleagues, friends and family I was the only one that put him on the level of kind of God on earth.
My dad had a little truck back then, as well as in your dad, as curious coincidence. I used to listen to the radio. Huey had fans all over the world, in countries that english language was back then the same as chinese. Now everything is complete different. I do remember to understand almost one word or two in each song. If so !

Memories of my childhood, sitting in front of my sound system with the radio on, listening to John Peel and waiting for the right song to come on so I could hit record and lay down the next song on my new long play tape. Doing last-minute mental arithmetic to make sure I had enough space left on side one to cram it in before frantically flipping the tape in case I got back-to-back awesome on the waves (I missed that slot more than once).....it is impossible to explain this to my girls, they grew up in the digital age where things like Spotify and iTunes dominate the landscape and everything is on demand. We have lost some of that magic, the longing and the anticipation. Thing is, the music still has all that power, it still speaks to people and pulls at the deepest parts of the soul. It still makes people NEED to get up and dance, or to sit down and cry. We may have lost some of that youthful naivete and wonder, but the magic persits. At least, I think it does, and honestly, that's all that matters to me.

"I Want a New Drug" is such a classic '80s hit, there's just something about that song that never gets old it sounds as fresh today as it did almost four decades ago. The convenience of the Internet and streaming though cuts out this middle section of life that used to be there; the adventure of discovering new songs and the sometimes long personal road to finally owning them that part is missing today, so music unavoidably has a different status and meaning to many people. It's instant now thus also instantly forgettable and disposable, it doesn't follow people's lives around in the same ways anymore. I doubt current big chart hits will be remembered much in 50 years too samey even regardless of the genres, they'll be numbers and statistics in a sea of similar sounding kiddie pop that's it. Not only did convenient technology kill off some of the fun, it strangely enough also murdered the talent mass behind the music so there's just less good stuff coming out.

I found it interesting when you talked about counting down the days for when an album came out and being in line to buy it when it did. It was special and when you finally could hear that record, it somehow sounded better. Kids don’t have that anymore, and that’s sad.
I tried to explain to my kids on how amazing it use to be to see a much anticipated movie the day it was released. There was being in line for hours, where you made new friends, and if was really good, everyone would clap at the end. It doesn’t happen like that anymore and I think the kids are really losing a part of the magic associated with older films.
I still remember watching ET, and I remember how it felt to go to any of the Indiana Jones movies. I remember the magic everyone felt when we watched the opening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Everyone in the theatre laughed, screamed and clapped when it was over. Everyone in the theatre shared that moment and that somehow brought us all together. Magic, real magic and that’s gone.

Adam, we're about the same age and like you, I was a huge HLN fan. MTV was in its infancy and to me, Huey was a much more relatable rock star than some of the 'hair' bands that were popular at that time. As a young teen I idolised his coolness. With respect to the streaming-physical copy debate, I appreciate both sides. On one hand, the convenience and immediacy of Spotify etc allows for a kind of unlimited exploration that would be very expensive were one to buy each track/album as an individual physical copy, but your point about the savouring and anticipation of new music also hits home for me. Furthermore, I really miss liner notes! I like to know who played on a track, which is often what would lead me to explore other music with the same personnel. Sadly, this is something the streaming services lack. Anyhow, thanks for the interview. Huey is a legend and by all accounts a genuinely nice guy.

With regard to digital music downloads, another major aspect missing is the fact that in the past you bought an album which, in itself, was an art form. Bands, and solo singers, would put a lot of thought into what songs would go into that album and that songs wouldn't, how they would be arranged, what versions of particular songs would be used, etc. When you listen to an album you hear a larger composite piece of art that, when done well, have songs fit like puzzle pieces into a greater picture. All this is lost when you simply download individual songs from a streaming service.
    BTW - Great interview!

For whatever reason, I paid attention to the lyrics for once, and they hit me right in the gut. My dad was a Vietnam veteran and lost a lot of his brothers in that war.
