I asked aroun in my school (art study) and almost everyone has been drawing or painting since they were children. i've only been drawing for 4 years. and that really opened me up from being ashamed for how much worse i am then them to feeling like i'm being mentored by everyone, wich is a weirdly nice feeling.

Sno; Great ,thanks for Sharing! You must be greatly inspired by now! Ive been enjoying the gift of art since 1950, portraits, only since around 1980. Only The Giver of this gift knows how much better you can become as each year passes.

I started to paint when I was 58 after taking a master-class from a painter who was rather famous in our city. He showed me how to do it in principle, and the rest a learned myself. Very soon three of my works were accepted by the gallery and one was sold. Now I am 65 and I am still learning and experimenting. I do mainly landscapes and flowers. But I am bad in promoting myself and trying to sell my works. And I feel that I need to change my style to be more artistic.

I’m a retired commercial artist and illustrator. I can’t really say how long it took me to do professional work, but I have always loved drawing things that interested me. In high school I took four years of industrial drawing (pre computer) with a teacher that required technical excellence. Even though I studied illustration in college, my high school experience taught me how to focus on learning and improving. The greatest improvements are difficult to measure by time because when you do something you enjoy you lose track of time.

Once I achieve a loose, lovely portrait that pleases me , I immediately begin to try to refine it, until the original loose quality is gone and the result is far from what I'd hoped to achieve.. Your videos are quite helpful.

Hi Chelsea! This particular resonated with me and I could not agree more. I also see many students wanting to just learn the quick tips that will make them advance quickly, but the truth is that any skill needs thousands of hours of practice to become intuitive. I have been a professional artist for 25 years, and I drew and painted as a child for 15 years before that, and yet I am always still learning. I find it very encouraging to know that this is natural and okay, opposite of what our social media world may want to make us think... that we can become top of our class is 3 easy steps in a month. Thanks for all you create Chelsea!

Right on Chelsea! 90 days stretches give just the right amount of time for a good action reflection cycle. Short term goals are more specific and flexible where you expect to learn and modify for the next 90 day period.

I am a classical pianist, and my teacher told me - playing piano is just similar to painting,
    though i paint also.
Each of your suggestion totally linked with preparing music pieces step by step, mind set, time, colour. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

It took me about 3 years to reach very high level
Mastering colormixing, value, anatomy, perspective and the rest. I have to say i practiced everyday 6-7 hours and read lot of book ; like schimd alla prima or anatomy for artists and many others.
There’s only one thing I’m struggling and thats the brush stroke, which is very very very important maybe the most important thing and i think this one gonna take really long time….

Thank you 💐. I love what you are saying it is so true. I love the looseness from your work. I am teaching art but this is another level for me because of your loose brushstrokes.
Saw the time table for the free webinar but for me, Amsterdam time, it is today starting in 10 minutes so not possible. The other times are tonight. Maybe another time. Thanks for showing your videos Love them.

Great advice! Let me interject, if I may, I started to talk with a gallery owner (modern art gallery; this is important to understand) I told him I started painting. He wanted to see what I was doing. I was naive, I took my paintings to him. He destroyed me with what he told me about my quality and subject matter. It took me about 6 months to start to refocus even though I kept painting. I am now seeking to develop like the renaissance painters and studying the modern artists. There is so much to learn and it's so fun when there is success! Also, I would like to understand the business side of this profession so I can be prepared in contracts, negotiations, sales, etc. This is a business when you become self employed as an artist.

I have a slightly different experience to art than some. Growing up, I excelled in writing & composition & I struggled w/visual art - whether it was painting, drawing, sculpting etc. My main difficulty was (unknown to myself or my teachers at the time) that I'm neurodivergent; I don't learn the same way most ppl do. When I was young & in school, teachers taught pretty much only one way: whatever way *they* understood how to draw/paint/sculpt. That meant a lot of classic techniques - of which I was abysmal to the point several art teachers informed me that I would never be an artist. But they all knew I was good at writing, so they instead encouraged me to focus there. So I have, & I've done well with my writing over the years.
Yet I kept finding myself always trying to draw or paint again, always wanting it & getting so frustrated that I couldn't follow the books or videos on classic technique & produce anything. Until one year I mentioned to a neighboring artist at a convention I attended for my books that I had always wished to be able to draw or paint or sculpt. I told them my story of multiple teachers telling me I'd never figure it out since I couldn't do it the way they showed me. The neighboring artist told me to forget how I'm supposed to draw & just pick 1 thing I want to be able to draw & draw it over and over, finding out how *I* see it & map it, & going from there.
Since then I've been drawing or painting nearly daily for the past 4 years. While I still think I've a lot to learn & my technique can be better, I've expanded from the one thing I wanted to be able to draw/paint well (hands and feet) to exploring other subjects & more styles & techniques.
I may not be a professional amateur but I like what I produce & I enjoy sharing it with others.

I have changed to a more loose style of painting starting with a portrait and now to street scenes thanks to some of your videos. Do you have any good practices about these scenes as they are quite different from portraits I am trying to avoid hard outlines to give definition but using negative space instead

Love the painting and the comments make so much sense. Unfortunately at 67 and only using oil paints for a couple of years it does seem that to attempt learning to paint is too late. Is this a fair reflection ? Obviously I do not aspire to be a professional artist.

I feel the same way as you. I need to stay the course and keep positive. I might have a happy accident! I used to get to a point and stop on a painting even though i knew it wasnt finished. Now im keeping to finishing. I learned I learn more slowly now too. A lot of things about getting old are frustrating to me so I try to remember its just in the moment anyway….and find a style so as not to be all over the place and develop the style that gives the results I like enough. There are many styles but when your old its probably best to stick close to one style so as to improve within some boundries.

Retired, inventor for hire. If I would be asked how long it would take to come up with a soltion that would make money. My answer would be, I have no idea, when God graces me with the solution.
As a beginning painter I can only make the promise I give those that hired me. I am tenacious. I am going to succeed.
Knowledge is where to start. Understand what is important and what isn't. So my initial paintings purpose is to learn what to prioritize, what I don't know.
I didn't mention time and I know from experience that putting paint down without increased knowledge is a waste of time and effort.
Add some knowledge. Paint and evaluate your application of the knowledge. Repeat repeat etc.
Time is never considered even when I am payed. Time doesn't change what is a successful solution.
And those that see time as important seldom put a product on the market that makes money. Sometimes lucky their competitors have bigger failures.

The difficulty is not about time. The practitioners don't have concrete path to develop their skills. Most of other skills like weight training, piano playing, etc. have very clear step-by-step to-do lists to practice. But we don't know 'what to practice' to be better at oil painting.
