Absolutely fascinating. This is easily the best motorcycle technical channel I have found.
Keep up the good work!
I'm astonished the man who ground the cam didn't insist on followers
Those rockers are worn and no longer square faced with the cam which having been reground will be spot on, just saying! Great job though 👍👍
I have made this mistake. A rocker only made contact on the new camshaft in one area. It ended up wearing the cam lobe on one side, because the pad was not making full contact on the cam lobe. I had to go back in and replace it all. Just a word of caution. Your channel is great.
Jim is showing how videos should be made - give all or nothing! Subscribed for sure!
At Megacycle cams here in the US, when you buy one of their cams or have your cam redone, they usually require that the rockers be reground at the same time.
I learned all about rocker arms and lifters after a cam change . I didn't replace until it was too late naffed the valve and now inline for a new engine albeit on a Corsa but principles are the same.
I wouldn't have caught that... Well spotted.
A brilliant and informative channel! Can't keep off it since dropping on it a week back! I bet your shop is better equipped than many dealers.
Cool video, kip it up Jim! Your video a week works.
Gonna re-watch gsxr series, my all time favorite
Had a similar issue with a cheap cam kit on a Ford capri many years ago.
That's one shiny Honda.
I love this channel.
All the 400 4s I used to know always seemed to be tappy
I had one when I was 17, it never let me down but it was fairly noisy mechanically
Cam chain noise yes ...but not a lot else 😅.
Love the clutch cover and cam cover. The cerokote colour looks very good.
Only took me about 2 years of riding without ear plugs to attentuate my hearing a bit: all wind roar. Dumb lesson to learn. Never again.
Any ride over 30 minutes, other than my noisy Kawasaki Z900RS with aftermarket header.
lovely bike , was my learner bike in driveschool great memories.
Fantastic insight into the workings of a 400/4, it will come in handy when I do my 125/4. Keep up the good work.
Learned something as well, thanks again 👍👍
Great channel, been watching your back catalog
Great video, really enjoyed it was very informative and interesting 👍
The spring on the rockers goes against the reinforced ribs in the casting.
😅 hahahahaha. I forgot about balancing those carbs i have the old " honda tools " for those... Which if i remember were over priced even back then 😅
Have you ever had a collet jump out of place due to a dislodged shim, that doesn't sound good at all 😂
Hi jim.great vids as allways.ime asking a question on here because its the same bike ive got.have you ever done the rear sprocket cush drives on one of these and how the hell do you get the old ones out.hope you can help thanks..😊.
Hi! Thank you for the video, I'm not a mechanic but 400 four owner, mine is tiking as well... anyway, have a look at "too old to die young" channel, when he get is cover off, the exhaust rocker springs are supposed to be inward, and intakes ones outward, so are mines. All of your springs are outside. Im not english speaker, I hope I'm making myself clear!
ruclips.net/video/-6kkVSa-J8U/видео.html
and ive just had a look at the parts drawing on cmsnl, they are in your way...strange
I double checked mine, they are inside and I've never took them apart.
find a good condition 2nd hand worn in camshaft and swap that in maybe worth a shot
Or getting the follower pads ground.
U could just shim the rockers to about .002” clearance that’ll help and reface the rockers
Hi, I have owned a 400/4 for 30 years and looking to export it to Western Australia! I have to prove there is no asbestos on the bike!! I have tried Honda UK and Australia but they are no help. Do you know if the head gasket and clutch plates contained asbestos? Thanks and I have enjoyed ur videos.
Just started watching,, forgive me for saying you have the clutch cable holding ring on the wrong bolt, it goes on the breather cover right hand bolt, top. also you should not need copper washers on those bolts, those head bolts underneath have dowty washer on then to stop the oil the others have copper ones did you fit the dowty ones to the correct nuts? I personally would not have test ridden the bike with that noise, would have investigated FIRST. You were lucky this time jim.
You don't need forgiveness for pointing out mistakes and offering good advice 👍That's how we all learn. As I always say, "every day is s school day" thanks for the great information 😁
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Cheers, even though i know well the single cam Honda, old Z's and GS's I still have to double check a few times with the manuals, the ones we get in for restoration or just repair have had who knows how many people working on them with bit removed and not put back in the right place or not put back at all!!!. Cable and wire routing are the worst for this. I get a bit "anal" with these routing and clamps as in my work at JMC Restoration in Stockton we have to put it all back as far as we can in factory trim. most of the time the customer will not see the difference but I will know it is wrong and if it goes in a show the judges WILL pick it up. Oh, before I forget when it first started the cam chain sound ever so slightly tight (a little whine") unusual for a 400/4 to have a overtight cam chain cold unless someone have made a bolt to manually push the tensioner round under the crank. The one I have modded like that in the past I set the tension a bit loose when cold, just enough to get rid of the rattle and recheck when hot. Set right these are almost silent motors when hot. That horn was prob refitted to the left as when on the right it has to be removed to d the tappets on No 3 EXH and in the way of No3 plug cap. I enjoy your content Jim and know a bit how you feel about producing content vs doing the job for a living,I would like to film some of the stuff we do but i get paid to work not film, i feel a old RUclips vid posted (with the required permissions of course) on our Facebook page would raise our profile and get work in. I have documented the work i do on my own bikes as you may see on my RUclips channel but not had time over the last year to do more and match it up with the multipage word files I have on each bike. Even taking pictures as I go is time consuming. As a thank you I have upped my patron sub to $5 a month. hope more will do so. Carry on waffling as much as you like. Regards
@robbateman7987 I love learning new things, so thanks again for the input 👍 It sounds like you have a lot of knowledge of the clasic Jap stuff. We'll all be lucky to have that knowledge and experience in the Discord Chat Group 👍 You just can't learn this stuff from a text book!
The cam chain tensioner, as far as I know is all standard with no parts missing. I agree it did sound terrible on video when it started. I think it may be a consequence of the microphone I'm using 🤔 I was horrified when I watched and listened to the footage!
Thanks so much for the Patreon contribution it means a lot. If you haven't already please join the Discord Chat Group 😁🙏
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV I joined when my subbs were still a Dollar. having probs wit the other login for sharing service manuals etc, still not recognising me as a user.
Maybe a silly question, but. Would it not be possible to have the rockers reground as well?
Yes apparently it's possible, but from a cost perspective it's likely just fitting new is the better option.
I never would have thought about the rockers moving along the length of the camshafts either, you just think about them rotating basically.
Can't you put two washers at the base of the rocker springs? I'm pretty sure that would work
Could it be uneven wear on the rockers? The heel of the rocker may not be square to the cam lobes...maybe. they did look fairly scored in the vid
Nicely deduced
Always get your helmet in the right place…
Hi how much would it cost to build up and reprofile the lifters if that is an option
is the gap between the rockers different on the cylinders?
Old followers with new cams is always pot luck. They never display "normal" wear patterns & in extreme cases can eat themselves. Have seen it a number of times, admittedly not on these but on other non roller follower setups. Fair play for diagnosis though!
Couldn't go for ride without earplugs.
I know a few people who always wears them, but I never would 😎
Ever had a hearing test?
😎👍👌👣
Those faces can be re faced
