Hey Eli, if you want it to cover more of the front of your legs you could just cut a line down the back. That way you'd have 2 pieces instead of 1 but you could always fill in the gap with more material if you want it to be all one piece.
+ImEvan That is what I was going to suggest. I would also make it more maneuverable in that, the way it is, it will get hung up if you have to straddle something or if you have to climb over stuff.

Is it a problem that the rivets are sticking inwards? I feel it would have been better to have the flat portion inside next to your leg
+Daniel Wilson I used something like 1/8" grip length rivets so they're hardly noticeable on the inside. Barely any different than using them the other way around.

The only problem he'll have with those rivets is that they don't last well under armour standards of wear and tear. You'ld be better off learning to make proper armour rivets which are stronger, take longer to rust and sit more flush to the armour. Making them is simple and quick once you know how to do them but take 5~10 minutes a rivet while your learning, longer if you break the rivet, which isn't the point of this, and if you take the time to learn to do that you may as well learn to and make legitimate plate and/or chain mail. So no, the rivets sticking out won't bother him, in fact the dimpling effect on the skin might even distribute more force from the blow across the leg, he'd end up with lots of tiny bruises rather than one larger bruise.

For added protection in the front, you can add a small piece of free hanging armor trapezoid shaped in the front. I have seen armor like that before. When you lift your legs up, your legs slide between the side armor and groin protection allowing for full mobility, but when standing up straight, your upper legs are fully covered.
One day, when shtf, you'll actually be able to yell at your wife and ask where your super suit is lmao those shin guards are sick

Try making a duplicate set of some of that and see how your weapons fare against it.
Nice build will be putting these ideas to work soon. An idea for the leather, coat it with melted paraffin wax (I use dollar store candles) then warm the leather until it all soaks in. TOTALLY changes it! The leather hardens like saddle leather. You may want to form it to the shape you want when the leather is still warm, 'cause it ain't gonna once it cools. Keep up the great work! You're teaching an old man new tricks all the time.

Why the cross on the shield? Is it like a pseudo-coat of arms since you're a Christian? Hell, you might as well put that "armor of God" quote on it. At least know that if the world as we know it does come to an end, there is a guy (you) that isn't gonna go full raider. Never go full raider.

The washer mail might be protective against slashes, but against thrusts, it's probably going to be kind of worthless compared to chainmail. Stabbing through butted mail may be easy, but if you take riveted mail (which, I do agree, is without doubt much more time consuming to make) it will stop piercing attacks very effectively.
I think what you should do is arrange the washers in a scale-like pattern, so that they overlap, because if they don't, blades will be able to just bypass the metal completely and stab through the canvas part.
I think a good way of doing it would be to arrange the washers they way you advised against doing it, parallel rows, and then just pop a washer in each intersection. It would become less flexible, but you could make it flexible enough, while the added protection would really be useful.
When that end part started, I literally thought you'd added a scene from Mad Max. Way to go 👌

turn the heat up on your welder. higher voltage, around 20, and a higher wire speed, with a pushing rather than pulling motion. you're getting a lot of unnecessary buildup and what looks like not enough fusion along the edges. angling the nozzle towards your direction of travel will keep heat from building up in the puddle and burning through the base material. can tell you're pulling which isn't necessary for a surfacing weld on such thin material as opposed to actually joining separate pieces.
I am going to say that is a flux core wire welder considering the lack of a gas tip. With flux core you pull.

What you could do to add some forward protection is make what would essentially be just a 2nd loose free hanging piece done in what ever shape you want to fit you and so after you had your haidate on you could basically just flop it over the belt. Alternatively you could make up a hook and loop or a snap system on the haidate and have it hook or snap to that but that would probably be at the cost of some mobility.
