  • Today I'm joined by journalist and filmmaker Toby Muse, the author of the book 'Kilo', detailing the journey of a kilogram of cocaine from coca leaf production to exportation and consumption. We discuss his years spent in Colombia investigating the cartels, gonzo journalism, the narco-militia known as the F.A.R.C, sicarios, Pablo Escobar and much more.

First time listening to the show and this was just so fascinating to listen to, great guest and I loved the dialogue. Drugs have never been my vice but I've most certainly been in denial over how much alcohol can become a crutch in certain situations for me. It's so easy and socially acceptable get too, getting it out of my system was hard. I'll defo give Kilo a read and start checking out the other episodes! Thank you for doing these

The part about not feeling anything after a while of using cocaine is so true. My relative used to be dependent on the substance until he stopped feeling anything. Surprisingly, once he realised he wasn't feeling anything, he just stopped using it. Obviously, he went to the ER due to withdrawal issues, but it still fascinates me that he was able to just quit without a 2nd thought. I'm not able to quit alcohol after multiple attempts to reduce. It makes me feel like the abomination of the family

I don’t know much about hard drugs like cocaine but I have witnessed a lot because some of my family are alcoholics. It’s never easy mate, I’ve seen my fun loving sister turn so mean and angry and I’ve heard stories from that same sister about our teddy bear of a dad turning into an absolutely unrecognizable stranger. I’m not sure what you’re going through exactly, and I’m sure you’ve heard it all, but you’re aware of it and you’ve said it and that’s something to be proud of. My dad says one of my sisters biggest issues being stuck in her alcoholism is that she calls it “just fun with friends every now and then” instead of admitting that she’s hurting herself and the family with it. But my dad walked the road, he’s 20 years sober now. He misses it sometimes, but he loves his life now more than he misses the releases from back then. I hope whatever you’re going through now, since when you posted this, you’re doing well

Loved this discussion it was so interesting, also when Toby said we have this need to turn real life into a 3 act structure I got goosebumps lol, it’s true and it’s very strange, but at the same time I’ve partaken in this behaviour too of enjoying dramatised portrayals of real events. It gets me thinking about the morals of it all and how the victims would feel, or their loved ones. I know with the Dahmer series (I attempted to watch it but felt almost dirty watching it so I only got 5 minutes in) there was a lot of discussion about the ethics of it because allegedly several victims families had come out and said they didn’t watch it to be made and they weren’t even asked by Netflix, which is messed up imo

If you are interested in the topic, I would also recommend the book 'Narconomics' by Tom Wainwright. He writes about the cartels from more of a business perspective.
