The first time I ever visited Alaska in 2013, I fell in love with sockeye salmon fishing from the bank. As a newbie to fishing the Kenai River, I had to figure out all the different gear and rig setups to catch sockeye salmon. In this video, I go through the gear, colors and setups when bank fishing for Sockeye Salmon on the Kenai and Russian Rivers in Alaska. Bank fishing is the way to go for sockeye salmon fishing, from sunrise to sunset.

The yarn color doesn’t make a difference. The yarn serves as a means of drag for the hook when in the waters current. The yarn brings the hook away from the weight and when you pull the rod at the end of the cast, it allows the hook to dive to the levels of the weight. That’s when you hook the sockeye.
Not good. You began by saying “specifically upper Kenai and Russian”… and the hooks you were recommending are illegal (except for the pre-tied “Russian Fly” you showed.

Fished the Russian kenai confluence as a child on a family trip. Ever since that trip I’ve dreamed and dreamed of going back. It’s beautiful, and I would love to retire there one day. Honestly I’ve never been on a trip until Alaska where I came home wanting to go back and stay forever

I live in Anchorage and it's a shit hole. Everywhere else in Alaska is better in every way. We're looking at property in the Mat-Su valley. Wandering, drunk and drugged up homeless have ruined Anchorage. In some ares of town the natives that have been banished from their villages because of drinking and drugs, they break into cars for spare change, sleep at intersections in the summer as if it were a day spa. It's ridiculous.
@@CS-xv6mx I noticed that when we visited anchorage. Had a much better experience in eagle river. Beautiful scenery and quiet people.

Hey Jeremy, I would check the regs on the hook gap, but 3/8 seems about right!
Where can you use hooks that size because I thought they had to be 3/8 of an inch from shank to point, wondering because we’re headed up in July. Great information you put out there thanks
Yes, 3/8 inch is typically the regulation size, so always check. I used a couple of the larger hooks for the video demo. But I do like the red colored Gakamaksu hooks for sockeye. They haven't failed me once! Best of luck up there in July
that's the hook size regulation in upper kenai which is everything above (east) skilak lake to kenai lake. Below that, you can use bigger hooks. Check the regs to make sure nothing has changed. Use the "russian river" flies sold locally if in doubt. You'll be able to get them cheaper there than anywhere else anyways. Check the ADFG website for emergency closures/orders and changes in bag limits.
I looked through your videos but did not see one showing the rod, reel, and main line set up you use for sockeye. We are doing to Soldotna the last week of June this year. Any advice would be appreciated!
If I fish the lower Kenai for sockeye, I use a XH rod, 50lb braid main line. You can use a 4000 size reel (spinning or casting). Those sockeye can fight really though so having a strong rod helps a lot!
Interesting video , Does the water always stay cloudy ?
The water is cloudy when chunks of the ice dam or snow melt from the mountain filters into the river. Some days the water is clear, others it's not. On the clear days, you can see 4 feet down in the water and literally watch the fish swim upstream. On the cloudy water days, the darker yarn and presentation does the trick!

This guy is full of crap. I’ve fished the Kenai for many many many (40 years) and Sockeye don’t give a crap what color you use because they don’t bite. Sockeye are snagged in the mouth to be legal. Bare hooks will catch sockeye. This guy is talking total crap. All other Salmon WILL bite different lures.
pro tip: salmon don’t bite when in fast flowing rivers/creeks
why would you give kids and ladies smaller weights tho ? the water dictates the size of wights the person using the rod wouldnt change the weight

This guy is clueless....disreard most of what he says.
For starters yarn color makes NO difference as you are flossing Sockeye....they rarely bite the hook.
Second his bead set up is illegal. Any bead(s) must be pinned within 2" of the hook or sliding freely on the leader above the hook.
3rd, no where on the Kenai or Russian can you use a double hook setup for Sockeye.
The small gapped Coho/Russian River fly is only required in restricted areas on the river (Russian river and confluence for example). You are only handicapping yourself if you are using them elsewhere on the Kenai. If no hook restriction, recommend a 3/0 or 4/0 hook. All you need is a small bead above the hook...thats it. Recommend a 6-8 ft floro leader 20-25lb test. If you use the 40+lb crap he is talking about you will pay hell getting off any snags. You can use several different weight setups but be prepared to adjust weights depending on current and water depth...you want to be occassionally tapping the bottom on your flossing drift. And DO NOT use an aggressive snagging motion as it will result in the snagging (illegally hooked) of fish, causing undue harm and damage to these beautiful Salmon that are attempting to reach spawning grounds. Respect the fish!
