    For the first time I bought Medjool Dates for a recipe. I had no idea they are this good!! I could eat them all. Amazing. I'd love to visit a date farm. Sweet Mother Earth I love you.

    I'll second the comment below. Quality Medjools are amazing. Also it might be worthwhile to point out why a lot of folks are using bananas and dates as a staple. Simply, they're more affordable and accessible for a lot of people. Not everyone is going to move to Southern Cal or Florida or Costa Rica or Thailand or develop a 1/2 acre farm in their back yard. News Flash people live in other places. Many don't live near large city fruit distribution centers. So cost and accessibility would be good reasons to use dates and bananas rather than many cooked foods and animal products.

    1:12 "Don't make one food your staple"
    ...having only one food at a time or for bouts of time can help the system relax (confuse it less!) and allow it to really get to those assignments WAY DOWN in it's assignment list, also, the more DIFFERENT kinds of foods you eat at one time (in one meal) the more confused it actually makes your system (and, conversely, also your mind and thoughts too). Mono-mealing is great for durations of time (actually probably for most of the time). Lumping bananas in with fresh organic domestic dates is not a fair comparison at all. Bananas are so over-rated, and dates still have their SEED intact (like an avocado too) and are basically just as good a source of potassium as bananas anyway (and dates and avocados aren't doused with ethylene gas). Mono-mealing is a great idea actually, especially if the food is a fresh, organic domestic batch of dates (or avocados, etc). Great way to let your body system handle some of those really "filed away" assignments it never got to get to because it kept getting bombarded so often with "confusing" foods and cooked combinations (aka "cuisine" and cooked/altered foods and the contaminants/chemicals/pesticides/gmo's that were tagging along)

    ...Pseudo-science. That would disallow many kinds of fruit (especially the high fat ones). So that's like saying: "If you don't eat a food with as high a protein content as you are", or "If you don't eat a food with as high a fat content as you are" etc. This is insulting the body too (like eating a SAD diet does), like the body doesn't know how to handle a low-water fruit or a nut etc. These kinds of "theories" totally cancel out all kinds of naturally occurring foods (fruits). And it's steering people astray. A video on RUclips said if you want a toxic burden as all the old toxins leave your system, then a high-water (fruit) diet is perfect for you, more or less. Toxins are often fat-soluble, and fat can buffer the toxin release while on a raw vegan diet. That's B.S., nobody said (while on a SAD diet) that you have to drink more water because the toast or charred steak will "dry you out". I'm a high fat raw vegan, and I notice that citrus it what is ASTRINGENT to me (wrinkle-inducing). Fat buffers the old-stored toxin release (old contaminants, and current contaminants too -- in the atmosphere etc, more than ever currently). You should be careful to CANCEL out high-fat content fruits, that's just bunk.
    So this video is good overall. But like with any other disinfo agent, some BAD information (and bad messages) are carefully MIXED into the video. And these two points above were the that would tend to lead people astray.
    And by badmouthing dates because they are "low-water content" it's bizarre that there was no mention of any kind of preparations (for instance, combing a "low-water content" date with a WAY high-water content, more than your body's content of water, mandarin/coconut/pineapple etc). After all, no food is exactly the same water content as your body (so should we start criticizing any food that isn't?). Or just soak the dates in water and look like a real tool.
    Dates are fine when you have re-established the "by design" intestinal fire. So these mantras about certain fruits are no good because they are more "starchy"-textured is dangerous. Think about all the foods people are addicted too, and that is filling and sweet at the same time, and usually it comes down to something like a caramel-y sweet roll or something, like a custard-y bread pudding with caramel sauce or something. Cookies or donuts or frozen custard. People want the starch, not just the water. Dates are a carefully-designed starch-like (not chemically a starch) blessing (along with some of the other starch-like fruits, some being high fat in addition to sugary and full of fiber). Dates are the natural CARAMEL in nature. No other food is AS CARAMEL-Y as dates (expecially certain varieties of dates -- like medjool or halawi, and also FUDGY -- certain varieties again -- like medjool and khadrawi etc).
    I mean you could also say, HEY MAN get out of that date farm and move back to Europe, you're skin is too white to be out in the sun like that. So go back to the climate that is more in line with your skin melanin-expression. But that would person would be deemed an asshole.
    I think ruling our dates as a staple is nearly being the same kind of asshole. Because that edict is pretty much only based on the dogma from 80/10/10 and other high-water "trips" people are on. 80/10/10 is great to clear and clean out your system (with fat and starch interludes mixed in where determined to be appropriate by the individual). Like nut butter and tahini binges (mixed with raw organic honey) really got me off on the right track after leaving meat, dairy and the rest of cooked food.
    Dates are a blessing, so are durian, avocado, cupuacu, coconut etc. And I would say if you rule these foods out (and dare to disrespect the human digestive system in it's ability to handle these foods) then you are denying possibly what most closely resembles our original foods (and our original cravings, and closest-matching foods for our system). The brain and "skin" need to eat (and those parts of our body crave fat). And fat creates perfect hormonal functioning. And it's the highest calorie source in most foods people love (including meat -- most of the calories in meat are usually coming from the fat in the meat, not the protein). And who knows how many other varieties and cultivars of fruits were lost in the deluge (the flood/the cataclysm -- it's documented how many species of fauna/animals were lost, but how many fruits did we lose?!?).
    Plus these are the most luscious, delectable foods. Only a few high-water fruits come close to the high-fat ones. Those would be fruits like mango, cantaloupe etc (because of their more creamy quality to them).
    I think the process is, clean yourself out, then go for the fat. Cleaning your liver out (if you're not cleansing it often in the beginning) can take a LONG time though, so I understand how people never really leave the "high-water" hiatus, and get back to what they really want.
    Hopefully soon though.
    Just drink your own harvested spring water with the "more dense" fruits, and you'll be OK (and get through the same). No fruit perfectly matches your body's water content (which fluctuates, based on diet and environment/season, and tasks it's doing/exercise/cleansing/swimming). So don't insult the body like it can't work for you, as if eating dates is some kind of abuse to your system. It's such an over-exaggerated and overdone "bash". Also, no food contains as many minerals as your body contains, so does that mean we should throw ALL food out the window?? No, because the body can modify the food during it's digestion (or "post-ingestion", lol, process) and convert and reconfigure it into things it wants, just get it good building blocks!
    Raw organic domestic dates -- totally fine! As long as you've "regained" the intestinal fire to keep the "bloating" down (and food combination issues -- you'll know when you get to that point, keep working at it!).
    Just get quality foods in (raw, organic) and let's really work on LIMITING the disparities between certain different "water content" foods (dates good -- any "sweet" pansy-ass counterfeit version -- like cooked caramel, cooked fudge cake, cooked candy bars and Hostess, etc). And focus on raw, organic). Cooked food is the supreme leader in the "water removed" category and look how well we can do on that (for a while at least), so it's probably REALLY mainly about RE-CONFIGURING your digestion, and you CAN get back to a state where dates don't incur so much of a gaseous, dehydrating condition. That's mainly due to a damaged and compromised digestive system FROM cooked food eating, and takes years and years (decades probably at least) to RE-ACQUIRE. Every meal is critical in other words (and the main importance of each meal is: RAW, ORGANIC, DOMESTIC, NON-IRRADIATED/X-RAYED, NON-TOXIC/LEACHING CONTAINER, with NO METAL and NO PLASTIC and NO MOLD involved).

    If you're eating foods with less water, *just drink more water*. The water content of anything is completely irrelevant, because you can just consume water with it or afterwards.
    What's more relevant is how fresh something is.

      The water itself is the same. I think you mean to say the juices. Even then though, juices in fruits that are low water (ex. dates), are more concentrated than fruits with less water (ex. watermelon). a small amount of date with a glass of water will overall have around the same sort of amount of fiber and sugar as a much larger piece of watermelon.
      Many fruits have very different levels of certain vitamins and minerals. but that's an entirely separate topic completely unrelated to water content.

    I love dates because they are so convenient. super high sugar content, high fiber, super high carb super low fat/protein, nutritious, great price per kcal. i eat them by the dozens. for 15 dates I use 660ml water, blend to smooth, let that rest for 5 minutes until it's all soaked up and good to go

      maybe not quality organic, but the medjool dates at trader joes make me gag, and the ones at any store I cant even attempt to eat. I have to blend them up and plug my nose theyre pretty bad

    We love Dateraid (Thanks Freeley). 15 or 20 dates and water blended in a vitamix...oh so good!!! But John even admits that he eats more coconuts that anything else. So there is really no difference. He mostly eats coconuts and I eat mostly bananas!

    Today at safeway I just bought a half pound of dates out of pure temptation, but than I started to realize for that same price I could get a whole watermelon or something else to get more bang for my buck. I must admit it eliminates any cravings for chocolate or candy as I transition to a fully raw lifestyle. Great video!

    I used to eat dates as a staple, and stopped for about two weeks just to test out more high water sources of life. I felt great, and when I attempted going back to them, they weren't so appealing any more. I also got sick of over hydrating myself before every meal of them.

    I agree with you about the taste of dried medjool dates. Soaking medjool dates in distilled water overnight to re-hydrate them vastly improves their taste and digestibility. It also makes them easier and more completely blend. I use them to sweeten hemp and almond milk.

    He's just giving information for those who are curious about it. No we shouldn't stress over raw vs not raw as that would stress people out. I think that if you are vegan, that's all that matter. How you do the vegan lifestyle is up to you.

    Great video! China Farm Dates claim to be organic but they do use non organic fertilizer! This is what they told me when I called to place an order. Needless to say I went right back to 7hotdates!

    dont really give any factual evidence why dates, specifically, shouldnt be a 'staple'. Its just a general sweeping statement that any one food shouldnt be a staple food. Which has no basis in fact, and this video provides no reasoning or any medical basis, its just the mis-informed 'idea' that eating one type of food is bad.

    Depending on where you live, having dates and bananas (and *one* variety of them) as a staple are the only options, moreover in Winter !

    Despite them being sweet you got to admit that natural sugar is good for you. Figs and Dates are good for you. Obviously you should never eat too much of any 1 thing.

    I have two producing Barhi date trees and enjoy them in season. I also make date jam and dry them and grind them up. I use no chemicals of any kind on my trees. But this is a seasonal thing so they are not year round eating.

    This is so interesting and helpful. The date situation here in central east PA is pretty uninspiring. Sometimes we get good Medjools but lately they've been stale and sometimes even rancid. The only other variety seems to be the deglet noor and they're often dry and without flavor. I've been thinking of ordering online and it's sure good to see what's available, hear what you like and see what they look like growing on the tree! I had no idea about the steaming, either.

    The maillard reaction (the chemical changes for cooking certain foods) is a very complex one, and is yet to be completely understood.
    Other suggestions are that cooking food breaks down cell structure, allowing more of the nutrients to be tasted, as well as converting some starches into sugars. It is possible that we've evolved to find more "nutritious" food to be tastier (nutritious from a survival/starvation point of view - as in, nutrient-rich).

    Don't get me wrong...I respect all of these guys...Harley Durian Rider, Freelee, Dr. Doug Graham, Rawfully Kristina, Markus Rothkrants and Dan LIFE REG, and of course John Kohler. That said....Dr. Joel Fuhrman makes the most sense I have read so far. Almost all raw....but soups are ok. And some of the veges like tomatoes with lycopene you have to heat to get the health benefit. Not to say...I eat raw almost all the time...but I am not dogmatic about it. Dr. Furhman has been at it for 30 yrs

    ps. Also cool fact, dates and date breads were fed to rich, deceased aristocracy in their in ancient Egypt. It was forced in their mouths and down their throats by family members visiting tombs.

    Kristina Raw Foods uses several pounds of dates everyday for smoothies and deserts-I was thinking she is way too extreme and they are very expensive!

    Explains why I get stomach aches most of the time I eat dates. I've eaten almost all varieties and only few of them felt good. And those were the ones that were dry and hard. I have no problem with that, they actually taste better than most varieties. At least I know they are raw.

    well if they are steamed, you are not eating raw.
    and i think that if a person were really motivated to eat a 100% raw diet for best results, they'd want to know the truth about what they were eating to achieve their goal! so i appreciate john telling us that they are not raw so we can make conscious decisions

    I practically live off sukkary dates from Saudi Arabia (the absolute BEST and straight from the motherland of dates!). I make a yearly trip and buy a ridiculous amount of boxes to bring with me but it's so worth it. As for buying in the U.S. I dislike medjool and deglet noor but I can tolerate barhi and khadrawi. I have yet to try honey dates or halawi but those are next on my list to try. I still love sukkary though cause it will always have a special place in my heart. ^_^

    I think you are so awesome! So glad to have found your videos. So many people questioning your ideas. I love the fact that you don't settle for anything you don't investigate. I love bananas and dates, but as someone coming from vegan lifestyle into this raw movement as of recently, I love food preparation, and enjoy variety. Variety is the spice of life. Its doesn't cost money to grow food people. It just costs you time. We should all be making growing food more of a priority. John your rad! Stay rad bud.

    Right on very good information I've been eating 3 dates every morning 30min before my workout and I can be one to say my energy level is good throughout my workout what I do notice when I don't consume the three dates I drag some what so yes I can testify to the energy level being better.i love dates .

      Yeah if it doesn't kill the fruit and the fruit is still attached to the tree and receiving water. And processing the water normally. It's still "living and breathing".
      If it's off the tree, in 118 degree temp. then that's not IDEAL but maybe it kicks up the "caramel-y" taste (if the date is still ON the tree when it's really hot).
      But good date processing businesses, I don't think let leave their dates out (loose) in 118 degrees. Unless to remove the moisture in a sun-dried way.
      118 is probably fine for the date while on the tree (might even boost the complexity of the flavor), but 118 off the tree is not something you want while preparing the dates to eat. But probably great if you want to dry the dates out to make date sugar crystals (once they completely dry).
      Like everything it takes discernment and experience in how to best "abide" by "natural law".
      I'd say (with no experience, but just makes-sense sounding) that, off-the-tree, I'd want the date to slowly lose it's water content, not try to speed up the drying process. Prolong the fruit's majesty, after it's picked.

    You should try Ajwa. I think it's the highest in nutrition and it is believed to cure many diseases in the Middle East area. I"m not quite sure but i think it only grows in "Madinah" in Saudi Arabia

    I think what you're trying to say is that no single food should be a staple - vary the diet. So if this is the case, then there is nothing wrong with a date so the title doesn't really make sense.

    John, I was thinking about the steamed thing, and how the company doesn't offer the info if they do or not. I always noticed that some of the pits from different varieties and vendors look either richer, or lighter and dryer in colour and feeling. Do you think the pits can be an indicator for whether or not they have been steamed?

    yea well not everyone has access to 100% fresh foods, I definitely would want that, but you seem to be able to get access to it. To be honest I tried eating a whole box of dates , and afterwards, felt tired, sleepy ,dehydrated, and had to drink a ton of water, but when I eat cooked quinoa with no sugar, I wasn't dehydrated, and felt energized, also I ate grapes and other vegetables..go with what feels best with you.

    Well, that's not "so carcinogenic" at all. It's not high risk. That's for sure.
    Are you suggesting that human evolution should go back to a time that predates the use of fire?
    More importantly, are you suggesting that barbecuing meat is the only way to cook it?
    And this from the National Cancer Institute:
    "Exposure to high levels of HCAs and PAHs can cause cancer in animals; however, whether such exposure causes cancer in humans is unclear."

    I love dates, but returned some that obviously had black mold inside. You don't want that inside you. I also just bought some dates that looked fine, but taste and smell like they are fermenting or something. I don't think that is good, may have to return the two packages of them. Darn! I can't find a decent date around here!

    i don't care what anyone says. if it weren't for dates and bananas there's no way i'd be able to sustain my 90% raw vegan diet. i'm poor and i need high calorie, nutrient dense foods to help me meet my calorie needs. i don't eat them exclusively, that would be ridiculous, but they're cheap and give me a huge bang for my buck so they are a staple for those reasons. not to mention im drinking about 3-4 liters of water a day. i gotta pee right now lol. all due respect to johnny though i love him.

    I will still eat DATES!! They are a great food, of course eat a variety of produce also..... Also you should always make sure you know & trust your supplier when buying food :-)

    Hi! I have a little question about dates.
    I noticed that very few fresh medjool dates I've bought have burned core and pit inside them. Any idea why is that?
    It tastes awful and looks totally burned black.

    I was wondering if you can grow dates in Manteca California I have a couple of plants not doing good . I also am very busy with my sone who has autism .     What are you talking about?
    The tests I've seen involve carefully cut and weighed (uniformly) veg; not grains.
    You say "in most of those tests they end up giving the raw fed rat less calories".
    Can you cite ANY, because I get the feeling that you've just made that up.

    Ill eat any date except those sugar dates that come saturated in white sugar and vacuum packed.
    They are way too sweat and kind nasty to me.

    I suspect that any date that does not say RAW on the package anywhere is most likely pasteurized or irradiated or steamed etc. Most imported dates are devitalized, sugared candied, manhandled and possibly not as good as the ones off the tree??

    I just want a healthy way to sweeten things ! Fuck, why does it have to be soo difficult. Can't eat sugar, can't eat agave nectar. Can't eat dates. Damn. Some say honey is just as bad...

      BroccoliBeefed Sugar isn't bad. Excessive sugar is what's bad. The problem with agave syrup is the high fructose content. It's apparently as much as you find in high fructose corn syrup. Fructose from fruits (whole or juiced) don't give you the huge spike in blood sugar the way refined sugars do. It's apparently due to the polyphenols in fruit.
      Me personally I use good old fashioned refined white sucrose in my coffee. It's cheap and has an excellent shelf life. In my oat meal I use brown sugar usually. The other sweeteners I use are honey and maple syrup. Those are all fine in my opinion as long as you don't overdo it. I just recently started consuming dates. I have been making Datorade. The sugar from the dates really gives you a lift.
      I think sugar should moderated. I may be overdoing it with the datorade. However it's good to experiment and see what works best for you. Over all if you eat a variety of fruits and veggies like John suggests you can't go wrong. Too much of any one thing isn't good for you.

      purplemutantas Refined white sucrose is one of the worst. Let's ponder a minute what we're talking about when we say refined, assuming you are talking about sugar cane. They take the stick, mush it up ,and spin it til all stuff is separated from its synergists, fiber, etc..
      So they turn it into a drug and are still able to sell it as a food substance????? Hmm...

      BroccoliBeefed I am aware that refined white sugar isn't good for you. I use it mainly because it's cheap and has an excellent shelf life. As long as it's used in moderation I don't see a problem with it. The rest of my diet has been pretty darn healthy lately. So I am not worried about a little sugar in my coffee.
