Robert,We called that kind of native cake here in the Phillippines (suman) the glutinous rice is soak in water for at least an hour, and then drain in a strainer and mix with gata/coconut milk and put a small amount of sugar and salt,mix well and then wrap also with banana leaves and cook for at least 4 hours..Godbless you always Robert.your so talented..

Those leaves that Robert is cutting are for the rice cakes. I saw a vlog of Micro and Tere from Palawan, Philippines. I saw her using them for cooking. I just don’t know the name of the plant. It has a beautiful flower like a bird of paradise.Robert , we make that in the Philippines but we use the banana leaf and it’s just a sweet rice with coconut oil. Boil and then there’s a sauce that you pour when you eat it. The sauce is made up of brown sugar or molasses and coconut milk . And then you top it with latik which is the dried remnants of coconut milk I think.We call it sumallatek in Ilokano.Your cutting technique is impressive. Wow! You’re amazing. The rice cake looks good. They ‘re selling that at Golden China Buffet but it’s beans no meat.
One more time I have to say that Robert is really a capable young nan who is willing to learn to do anything else! The most I’m impressed is you did the rice grinder! It’s anazing! You live in forest, I live in a foreign country. We have the common thing is to keep the traditional cake for New Year regardless where we are. Hi Robert I keep coming back to watch this video. The ingredients you used for this cake are similar to those used by the Teochew people in Malaysia to make Bak Chang dumplings. However, Bak Chang dumplings are wrapped in bamboo leaves in a pyramid shape. We also use a few more ingredients such as coconut milk, chestnuts, mushrooms and sometimes peanuts instead of green beans. They are one of my favourite childhood dumplings. Who taught you how to make all these exotic cakes? Thank you for sharing, not just the making, but the eating of the cakes on screen as well They look absolutely delicious - yum yum!

I keep coming back to watch this video. The ingredients you used for this cake are similar to those used by the Teochew people in Malaysia to make Bak Chang dumplings. However, Bak Chang dumplings are wrapped in bamboo leaves in a pyramid shape. We also use a few more ingredients such as coconut milk, chestnuts, mushrooms and sometimes peanuts instead of green beans. They are one of my favourite childhood dumplings. Who taught you how to make all these exotic cakes? Thank you for sharing, not just the making, but the eating of the cakes on screen as well They look absolutely delicious - yum yum!

Your mum must be a brilliant teacher. She is a role model to us all, passing on her Sous Chef Skills in festive cake making to keep the tradition going. The techniques of making the mould from wood, wrapping the cakes in leaves and serving (slicing) the end product with precision is difficult for anyone to match. It is not just a delicious cake, it is a perfect creation. Well done her and you for giving us a glimpse of your rich culture.
