    Why do cars still have navigation? In my Volvo PHEV, one reason to use it is called “energy distribution using maps data.” In previous years Volvo called it “predictive energy function.” If your trip or round-trip is further than battery range, and if your route is entered in navigation, the battery is apportioned over the entire trip, wherever advantageous. Besides distance, it even takes into account altitude and traffic. In my experience this can save 10 to 20% on fuel when traveling 100 to 200 miles. (This isn’t widely known because no one reads the owners manual.)
    A&Z, keep up the good work.

    We have owned our GV70 EV since late May 2023 and are wowed with its performance and range. Our range has been at 5.2 km/100 km from May till February 6th, 2024.. 5 % better than advertised and included with Winter driving. The big surprise in range! This car is luxurious and amazing.

    While I used Android Auto (mostly Waze) in my Subaru, I am VERY thankful for the built in Nav for 2 reasons. The first, is that Subaru is NOTORIOUS for it's Android Auto and Apple Carplay being flaky. Nearly every longer trip I take it freezes up and stops working. The built in Nav always works. The second reason is that on the highway especially, it's surprisingly good. The exit information, the turn information etc, comes up in color, it's clear, and oftentimes superior to the same info I get on Android Auto. The big drawback is I don't get traffic info. One other thing that is Subaru specific is that I get the turn information on the screen at the top of the dash where it's easy to see while I driving and I don't have to look down at the middle of the dashboard.
    I don't know about other Nav systems, but maybe people ought to give the built in systems a try because they might be surprised.

    Thanks so much for your excellent car reviews. A comment on the car navigation versus phone nav. We have made a few long trips across the US and found both our car nav and phone nav are very useful when combined. We primarily use Google Maps, but have found that the Toyota nav is handy as well. On major highways, the Toyota nav shows information on the next three exits, such as fuel, food, rest stops, and lodging. So if we have been on the road for a while and need a rest stop, we just toggle off of CarPlay on the screen, to the Toyota maps, look for the information we need (Oh the next rest area is 10.6 miles away) and then toggle back to CarPlay. This work great for us.

    Regarding the Nav question, In EV's and PHEV's that have adopted Google Automotive (Volvo, Polestar, Honda, some GM, Porsche is coming and others) the navigation data is a key part of the battery management system. Your phone can't fill that role.

    On the subject of subcompact cars, Zack gave a good demonstration of why they keep getting bigger: he got into the back seat of the Kona and showed that there was "only" a few inches of space between his knees and the front seatback, and a few inches of headroom - in other words, it was *completely* *adequate* for most back seat occupants, but he gave mediocre hand signals. People are continually being negatively influenced by reviews that bigger is not only better, but necessary.

    Vehicles with a staggered wheel setup do have different rim sizes; it's not just the tire size. That being said, an all season tire will last significantly longer than a summer tire. Michelin Latitude comes to mind. 42k on a Macan and they look great.

    As a 2012 Honda Fit owner the last 11 years, for a subcompact, I have more interior driver/passenger and cargo space than most compacts, especially the Civic and Corolla! It was so well designed in it's efficient use of interior space, I've brought so many large items home, like large IKEA furniture packs and wrapped up 9' real Christmas trees INSIDE with the doors closed that others swear they would need a minivan or large SUV to carry. I'm holding on to my Fit as long as it runs and will be sad the day I have to move on from it!

    • @TheLanard
      @TheLanard 9 месяцев назад +1

      I almost got a Fit for my spouse in ‘20, but I decided not to. We live in a town with a lot of large pickup trucks and a 50+ speed limit. The Fit wouldn’t stand a chance against an F-150 doing 60-70 mph. And we’d seen some horrendous accidents.

    • @msmoniz
      @msmoniz 9 месяцев назад

      @@TheLanard Fair enough, but being much smaller and lighter, especially with the manual transmission, you'd be surprised how nimble and responsive handling wise it is for avoiding collisions, which I can attest to! It's also got the full compliment or air bags everywhere and pretty well designed crumple structure that I've never not felt confident in it, and it's my highway 100-120 km/h commute car too!

    • @kenhoward3512
      @kenhoward3512 9 месяцев назад

      You see very few around anymore (unlike Civics) because owners ultimately didn't like how noisy and poor-riding the Fit was, including terrible seats, regardless of how much stuff you could carry.

    • @msmoniz
      @msmoniz 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@kenhoward3512 You must be in the States because up here in Canada they sold relatively well and there are still plenty around. In fact they still command a decent premium on the used market up here. And having driven one for over 2000,000 kms, the ride is fine, so I have no idea what you're on about. Unless you're expecting luxury car ride from a subcompact or even compact class, which would be a "you" problem. No worse than any Civic I've ever owned and driven and still far better than any full size pickup that so many people still drive as their daily commuter car. And noisy? Again, I bought transportation not a sound proof isolation booth. Besides, I listen to music when driving, not my car.

    Car nav is incredibly useful when your smartphone starts acting up! My Android recently went into a boot loop while i was using it for navigation and became unusable (had to replace it at the end of the day) and i didn't have any navigation built into the car and i was in a proper fix. So yeah, though car nav systems look old compared to the latest and the greatest from google, i still appreciate them. No reason to give the manufacturers any reasons to remove even more options...

    0:25 Small cars: They are produced for elsewhere in the world where government regulations don't favour big cars and SUV's. The 4th gen Fit exists as the Jazz and Jazz Crosstour, the Mark VIII Golf non-GTI is sold elsewhere in the world, the Yaris is global except North America etc etc etc. There is a kind of truth that small cars are expensive to produce in that all cars are more expensive to produce now that what constitutes an entry-level car is already a high starting point, but it's simply not true that they can't make good small cars because they do so in other countries where the regs aren't as lax as in North America.

    8:29 I have a CR-V PHEV, and the built-in navigation is far superior to the Waze/Google Maps ones on Android. I did connect my phone to the car, I have traffic information displayed in it, the car knows about charging stations and can even optimize the EV mode for the trip. Also, it can adjust the speed for turns based on the navigation data. I don't think I'll get back to Waze/Google Maps for as long as I have the car.

    Love your Reviews, but when it comes to Navigation, I will take my KIA Seltos Navigation over phone maps anytime. KIA's maps are accurate and DO show road congestion/traffic in real-time. Different strokes. If I was jumping from car to car, then yes, I would obviously prefer to use my iPhone than learn a New system in some car. That said, from Day 1 in 2021 (3 map updates since then) the KIA Seltos Navigation reminded me of Apple, in that it was Intuitive and quickly understood by me.

    One side note on the navigation issue is the price of data on your phone in Canada and dead zones. Phone reception regularly cuts out in the corridor between Ottawa and Kingston. If you are using nav you can miss a turn or 2. If you travel in the mountains north of Montreal the same thing. The native nav in cars I’ve been in don’t seem to lose their signal as much.
    I agree that voice command nav on your phone is the best (can still take you on a funny route) but it is not perfect. Some older buyers would not necessarily have phones that would integrate with nav on apple car play or android auto that well.
    Just a thought.

    I wish more consumers liked and auto companies would build sedans with separate and lockable trunks. An SUV or crossover doesn’t have the security for the contents in the rear area. Thieves break into the SUV or crossover, they are in the trunk. The rear and side windows on the rear hatchback can be broken and they’re in the trunk, not to give anyone ideas!

    Staggered uusally means that the wheels are wider or the rear has a lower offset than the front , or both. So changing to all the same tire size does not mean you have eliminated the staggered set up. If thats the case, the rear wheels need to stay on the back and the front on the front, regardless of tire sizes.

      I don't think making compact cars a little smaller will cut much of the price. Base models already cost a lot less than higher trims - but who wants to drive a base model? Excessive, world-wide inflation during the pandemic kicked the prices way up, and I don't think they will be coming down much. Over time, wages will have to catch up.

    I disagree on the navigation, it's nice to have both..... it's good to have something that's integral that's not dependent on the phone. I've found my navigation to be perfectly adequate in most circumstances. Sometimes screws up and send you the wrong or less desirable route, but so does my phone occasionally. My system, though now considered ancient, gives reasonably up-to-date traffic conditions as well. Regarding the cost, all of these vehicles cost so much to begin with, so to me it is unthinkable that they wouldn't include that for what you're paying...... and if they did get rid of it they're not going to pass on the savings to you anyway. What have people been smoking? Why the hate? The car companies are always looking for opportunities and would love to do more decontenting --and charge you the same or more..... don't give them any ideas!

    What about our Canadian electric network? 🇨🇦 What do you guys think? Is it able to provide enough electricity by the time everyone needs to have an electric vehicle? Especially in winter time. We got an province wide alarm here in Alberta about reducing electricity usage. And if so, how much will prices of electricity skyrocket? Will they make electricity in general ridiculously expensive? Will people have to install sun/solar panels on their houses mandatory etc? Seeing this happening a lot in The Netherlands and it is already getting to a ridiculous point there.
    I think the province wide alarm in Alberta about possible power outages says it all. People were asked to cut down on electricity usage because the network couldn’t handle the demand that day during extreme cold. Love your show! Keep up the good work! 🇨🇦❤️‍🔥🇨🇦

    I saw your show at the Japan Car Show ,Toyota execs were asked about why the smallest vehicles were discontinued.Their answer was …Governments are concerned about the safety of the smallest Cars,so they are being discontinued in NAmerica.

    One major reason there's no more subcompact cars is the fuel economy regulations in the US. They require better fuel efficiency from cars with smaller footprints. Larger footprint vehicles can meet lower fuel efficiency standards.

      All these replies are true. And if I may add, many Americans drive big SUVs because of a false sense of safety. They think they would be safe while driving so they take more risk in bad driving behaviors. And if they crash into someone driving a smaller vehicles, too bad for them, especially if they cause serious injury/damage - or even killing the other driver.
      Many of these big SUV drivers are also more discourteous, rude, and oblivious to the rules and laws of the road - again, as mentioned here, because of feeling superior to everyone else.

    • @AmmaLove24
      @AmmaLove24 9 месяцев назад

      That's not why. It's because they are more practical and versatile. You can haul things when you need to, they come with AWD (usually), they are higher up to the ground which gives more options to where you can drive, you can car camp in them, better for families and pets, and they are making them better to drive than in the past. Car companies are making them better and better. Compact cars don't offer as much in many ways. Why have something do 5 things when it could do 10?

    Hello,
    Great show keep up with the awesome show. With the growing number of car thefts across Canada, from Toyota rav4, Honda crv, Lexus rx series and all other high end cars. Why isn't subarus on that list of top cars stolen. Are the cars not shipped over seas, with the rough terrain, isn't subaru good for theives to steel for where it's being shipped? Just curious. Thanks Edy

    I was surprised to find that the CX-90’s wheelbase is a huge 122.8”. 9-11” more than the top 4 you had in your other video.

    • @springertube
      @springertube 9 месяцев назад

      Yes, close (+/- tenths of an inch) in wheelbase to the Grand Cherokee L, but not longer overall (bumper to bumper) than some of other larger unibody SUVs such as Traverse/Enclave which are + a few inches. It beats the Grand Highlander in that overall length measurement but just by tenths.

      Then you get the most bang for your buck with the Mazda CX-90 in terms of interior space. It’s the lowest cost 3-row SUV.

    One note... I don't think the Genesis GV70 battery would be a problem.
    If the battery is the same as the Ioniq, it'd be around $50,000... for the Ioniq that's a problem because that's more than the cost of the vehicle... so insurance will total the car.
    The GV70 is much more expensive than $50,000, so insurance companies wouldn't total the vehicle.

    So far, every Hyundai or Kia with the new software is getting wireless carplay, either at release or with a confirmed USB update.
    Owners have confirmed it works after the latest USB update around a month ago, so it's nice that they're being consistent with CCNC.
    That said, I think it's a bit annoying to wait for them to facelift or refresh vehicles to get the new software. If you buy an $80000 Genesis now, you don't get wireless carplay. You have to wait for the refreshed model that is being released next year.
    I think they should figure out a way to allow the previous software to also be updated with wireless carplay. There's a vocal minority feeling understandably left out. The dongle is fine in theory, but the audio quality versus wired or wireless carplay is pretty bad.

    If you could just swap for refurbished prebalanced batteries, it should reduce cost as they then take the old damaged battery, replace and balance internal modules and sell it to the next customer.
