    If you thought Lemmings got away with plenty of things, wait till you try "D" on the PlayStation. The Director missed a deadline and had to hand deliver the master copy of the game to a shipping center, so he switched out a "Clean" copy without the disturbing imagery and story with his original one, and it was released with a T rating without incident.

      Like I mentioned earlier, the director got the version without the alterations printed. If Sony caught word of it beforehand they would’ve halted sales until they produced a copy made to fit their requested edits.

    That trap in the last level is horrifying! Of course, I've never made it that far into the game, so I didn't know about it until now...But what I DID know about for some time now and was equally shocked by is this sawblade trap in the follow-up game, "Oh No! More Lemmings". Needless to say, it was also bloody, though not quite as disgusting as the rock trap in this game...It's a wonder these games weren't rated T for Teen for these traps and that level...

    Censorship mostly works on basis of determining what can people use to sue you. In China, for example, a level full of skulls and human bones would be unnaceptable. US mostly censors religious simbols and anything sexual, which are the items with the most sensitive and sue-prone activists.
    That said, I haven't seen this game in a really long time. I don't think I ever got to those levels, since I sucked at the game.

    When I was a kid, I was afraid by the "Menacing" level, to the point that i stopped my AtariST and didn't go on!
    Later, I faced my fear and finished the level, i was proud of myself lol.
    The same story happened with a platformer called "Flood". While Lemmings' level was a cameo from another game, Flood's gore was put in purpose more for a joke, and was completely unnecessary and as a kid not only i was disturbed by it but also couldn't understand why putting such graphic elements for nothing. But when i managed to play and finish the game, i found that funny.

    I don't know if this would count as a creepy moment, since it's mostly eerie, but in Terraria, after defeating the Celestial Towers, you get the message "Impending doom is approaching", then you have about one minute before the Moon Lord (the final boss of the game) spawns. During that minute, the music slowly fades, having disappeared completely after about twenty seconds. It gradually gets just a little bit darker, and darkness pulsates around the edge of the screen. The thing is, there's still sound, just not music, but at this point you probably won't be somewhere with much sound, since most people want to be prepared for when the Moon Lord spawns. Now, call me crazy, but I think the music, rather than fading out completely, is replaced with infrasound. I seem to always get a minor headache when it happens. It isn't that bad and doesn't last long afterwards, since very low-frequency infrasound can have some nasty effects, and Re-Logic would want to avoid that, but it would make sense if there actually IS infrasound. It has been suggested that infrasound can invoke fear in humans, and even some other animals. Then the boss spawns, music's back, end of story. But that single minute has such a huge impact.

    • @DonnieDoodles
      @DonnieDoodles 8 лет назад +5

      And that's why The Moon Lord is such a memorable bossfight, IMO. Rather than just "ARGHAGAH" and a Cthulhu expy appearing, he makes it anonymous... He's watching... Waiting... And getting closer....

    • @dartonmagnusson5783
      @dartonmagnusson5783 8 лет назад +1

      Maybe the infrasound is there as a way to keep Ocram in your head... But wouldn't that be more of a game theory rather than a creepy moment?

    I don't think it's physiologically possible for such a small being to contain this much blood...
    Honestly, I've never cared for blood effects in most games. Heck, I play a lot of Monster Hunter, and I always turn it off (and thank goodness I can) because it impedes the gameplay for me. It's harder to follow what's happening on the screen, if you're hitting a weak point or not, if you're getting a critical hit, etc... when there's an impossible amount of blood splashing everywhere.
    But in a game like Mortal Kombat where it's pretty much the selling point... yeah. Might as well not have the game on the console at all.

      In games like Terraria, the bloody bits enemies explode into upon death makes it harder to tell whether an enemy has dropped something you want. Being able to turn the blood and gore off is definitely a welcome option.

    Lemmings is also a favorite of mine, and was a big hit. One of its great innovations is combining a cutesy style with brutal violence, this combination has huge mainstream appeal (apparently a lot of people out there have a dark sense of humor) and is often copied, most famously by the game Worms which is still a major franchise to this day.

    Following on the ratings back in the day, it's true they would just play one/two levels tops and give it a rating according to that.
    These days, the ESRB/PEGI rating has gotten stricter, meaning they have to play the entire game then give it a rating there.

    Welcome to the time where offending people's beliefs or ethnicity was the number one thing to stop in their eyes. Seriously, you'd be surprised how many steps were taken in all kinds of media. Nowadays, it's the exact opposite: realistic violence is a guaranteed higher rating, while drugs, sensual stuff(So long as there is no naughty parts) and language(So long as none are bleep-worthy) will probably get you a T(or 14, if we're talking TV) rating. And religious stuff is explored all the time now(For better or for worse, depending on product).

    This is the SNES version, it was a port developed by Sunsoft, it stayed true to the source material. The level "Heaven Can Wait (LET'S HOPE!)" was renamed to "Paradise Can Wait (LET'S HOPE!)". This change does not apply to the Japanese version. That's why the level "All the 6's" was replaced with a harder level. Also, the Sega Master System prototype had that level, but had to be trimmed down to fit on the Game Gear's small screen and was renamed to "Sixes Not!". Also, one taxing level had "Death" renamed to "Terminate" in the SNES game. Also, several Psygnosis properties were removed from the Sega versions for licensing issues. The Master System and Game Gear ports were developed by Probe Software.

    Lemmings has a few other nasty traps, such as an electric fence that zaps lemmings that touch it, or a hydraulic press that simply squashes them. There are also levels in which the entry hatch is far enough above ground that lemmings die from the fall, but there's only one parachute, and that lemming needs a couple of minutes to get to where he can build a bridge to save the others. Meanwhile, it's Splat! Splat! Splat! Splat! Splat!

      What's weird with mine is that:
      - The Peach one (from the Mario line) can be used in Smash
      - Meanwhile, the Rosalina one (and sometimes the Lucina one) can be used in Mario games.
      While the latter can be explained by Smash being a crossover, that certainly makes the former weirder.

    It's kinda like how my parents were ok with me watching an episode of Star Trek where a guy's head gets blown to bits or a woman dies screaming and crying in agony for around a minute while a hole opens up in her stomach, but I couldn't watch X-Men, which had far less objectionable material.

    Some other video game censorship I don't understand is how they drop the F bomb in the Wario Land 4 intro theme. And in Pokémon Emerald, when talking to a person who wants you to make a phrase or trending slogan, Heroine is a option.
    I'm not joking. Literally.

    If I had to guess, the censors were more lenient back when the SNES port of Lemmings was a thing.

  • @JRussellRetroGaming

    Funny enough, on the PC Windows version and PS1 if my memory serves me right, they removed these special levels (including MENACING) ..
    Secondly regarding the SNES version, my guess is they were worried about offending people based on religious reasons and not violence at the time in the early 1990s. That's just my guess. However though the Japanese Super Famicon version were not altered like they did on the US, CAN, UKV, EUR, FAH, and AUS version of the SNES port of Lemmings. On the Japanese Super Famicon they did have the All the 6's level on that, whilst the others was replaced with Ohayo Lemmings san! from memory too Level 16 Fun, They did have the word HEAVEN shown on that level on the Japanese version, other versions like the US, CAN, UKV, EUR, FAH, and AUS versions it's replaced with PARADISE which I assume was for religious reasons.
    That's just my view of it.

    You should do a video on "Heart of Darkness" for the PS1, It got an E for Everyone rating. E FOR EVERYONE, not M, not T, not E10+, NO. E. It looks cutesy enough with it's FMV intro about going to a magical world to save your pet dog. but 99% of every death is you being swallowed whole and digested in detail. Here's the best example: ruclips.net/video/jYyZfME5XYY/видео.htmlm23s

    • @nehehehgraylois

      @@vanilla8956 The E rating is such a case by case basis that I definitely believe it got the rating but I was still not prepared for how thin they can stretch shit just by not showing any gooey red stuff
      granted E10 didnt exist yet then but six of one half a dozen of the other right?

    • @vanilla8956
      @vanilla8956 2 года назад

      @@nehehehgraylois I disagree with the notion there's anything more offensive about red stuff when injured than death itself, that's just how the body works. but and I think E10+ is a joke. Like, you have the word "everyone" next to "except for these people!"
      All E10+ did was turn E into a different beast then it used to be and create some kind of fake line in the sand of an "innocent" game that didn't exist before and doesn't matter.
      If it were up to me, there would be no rating at all, just very short text warnings of the content, like for this game: "Death depicted upon failure"
      for Unreal Tournament: "Optional blood and dismemberment, swearing, nudity"
      FNAF: "Jumpscares, Horror"
      you get the picture, no authority trying to talk down to people and tell them what they are supposed to think about these things, let them decide for themselves. Unlike myself five years ago i'm absolutely tired of pretending there's some way to just group people together and rate them because everyones an individual. When I was younger I actually really loved Heart of Darkness but I had some kind of dumb idea that "It's okay for me to see and like but not others like me"
