Review of the Black Wolf Stealth Mesh Tent

  • A look at the Black Wolf Steath Mesh test. The tent is designed to be low visability and blend into the natural envoronment. This is a lightweight tent suitable for hiking. It is rated as 2 person but would probably be better for one person and their gear. The full mesh design means the tent is very well ventilated, however this does make it unsuitable for colder climates.
    Weight: 2.6kg. Packed Size: 50cm x 15cm diameter. Tent Size: 230cm x 180cm x 100cm high.
This video also features a suprise guest star appearance by Sammy the Keeshond. He loves to get involved in everything and this review was no exception.

Thought id post a new comment after owing this tent for more than 10 years.
The Tent is still performing great. I have used it on 100+ occasions, In +40C down to -5C. Been thru torrential rain and gale force winds
Has only one small hole/leak in the corner of floor and fly screen has no major holes doesnt appear to let insects in.
Poles still work, no breakages ( i use different pegs). Fly is in good condition. No mould or smells. Zippers still work fine
Only negative is the fabric which hold the poles has worn really badly. I had external tabs/hooks sowed in to replace them and they work fine.
Overall this tent cost me about $100 and it is great value.

I have very much the same tent, Oztrail Mozzie Dome 2.
The flys are very different though.
Bought the tent and fly 2nd hand for $60, and it had never been used.
I agree the fabric tunnels for the rods are not as good as clip up.
So I ended hand sewing 5 plastic clips to each fabric tunnel.
Now I can set the rods up first, then hang the tent up via the clips.
The tent sets up just as well.
This makes set up/down easier and quicker in the dark and wet.
With these rods, the tent is pretty much stand alone. You don't need to peg it down, which is great if you want to set up the tent without the fly under a picnic shelter, shop awning, garage, verandah etc.
My ideal tent is fully stand alone including fly (pegs optional).
This is good when you have to set up on sand or very hard ground, and pegging is dodgy

Hi Mark, I bought one of these in a camo colouring oh ,maybe 4 years ago, over that time I found it easier to push the poles through without pegging the tent out, push the bottom pole through first then the one that over laps on top, you can then clip the ends in then peg it down. I do find I get condensation unless I leave the fly door open, seeing as I usually pitch it under the awning on the side of my 4wd that isn't an issue, I agree with the clips idea though, I nearly gave up with this tent till I sorted my pitching procedure, BTW we also have a Black Wolf Turbo 240 which we've had for 11 years, still going strong, BW on the whole make some good tents.

I'm 6'5" and used this tent for a year.I mean every night (cycle tour) brilliant! plenty of room, excellent in wild and wet weather, bomb proof as far as a strong wind goes. Never got wet in the heaviest rain. It's just the right shape for the wind to slide over. Did some -10 nights, no problem (have a good rated sleeping bag:)
AND I would never buy another one because of that flaming push the poles through the seams routine. Totally painful, time consuming, not smooth and punched holes in the fabric over time. As soon as black wolf change that, I am totally up for another one! Good video, Cheers.

I was just given one of these from a mate in the army; apparently they were issued to some units in lieu of hootchies. I use a Helsdon hammock these days but I'll find someone for the tent. Great review on the setup.

This is a good tent for the money, mine has survived some pretty righteous rain and wind. Not huge on the ventilation but no big deal. The pole sleeves take a knack but they do provide support for the poles which you don't get with clips. Once you have the knack you can thread them with the fly attached.

I was in store looking at these and tried to load up your vid on my mobile phone to get an idea of it before purchase. It didn't load, I was rushed for time and went ahead with it. Had I watched your vid first I may have rethought it due to the pole issue. I couldn't agree more. Pain in the freckle !!! Clip up would have made it almost perfect for a quick pitch single man.
Also used to have a keeshond many years ago. Great dog and yes very very loyal, great for a 2nd pair of eyes when hiking

Thanks mate, it's funny you find this video now. I'm just about to put this up in the yard to check it over before an upcoming weekend away. Better to check it now than get out there and find a problem.

Nice review. Thanks for making it. I'm glad I watched it all because advertising photos don't show just how large those ventilation gaps are at the bottom. It really wouldn't be any good in cold areas.
This tent looks exactly the same as a Roman Commando Hiker 2 person tent. They even come in the same colours. Maybe they're the same thing, just branded differently for marketing.

Great review. I bought two of this tent, except it was the cammo pattern, for my wife and me. We haven't used them yet, but its good to see they are pretty easy to put up. Thanks.

Great review, and looks like a good tent for the summer. I love my tent, its a 4 man tent but the only drawback to it is that its stored in a BIG bag, that you have to carry on your back. So not ideal if your going out in the woods for a little survival camping trip. But i take it if i'm going somewhere with my car than i can take it since its not that much of a pain. Again great review looks like a good option :).

Own the tent, great in heavy Rain as long as its not blowing a gale, Fine in winter but wouldnt use it below 0,Room for a two if your a couple but could be uncomfortable with two friends, best feature is in summer u can take fly off and feel the breeze, on hot summer nights the air flow is the winning feature.Agree putting poles in and out is a pain and tent can wear badly wear they cross over

The water can get between the fly and the mesh right at the bottom, close to ground,
Not sure if it was splashing up off the ground or just coming in on the rain but had a puddle.
Had the fly fully pegged out, Maybe if you pegged it differently it might not happen
The floor was great no leaks, which means any water that gets in stays in.

Urannoy, how about wind/cold through the uncovered mesh parts on the bottom?

    • @bringingtherukas7473
      @bringingtherukas7473 5 лет назад

@@rs666sathan666pk I have used this down to -5C at Barrington tops on fairly windy nights(hoping for snow, none came).
The Fly can be pegged tight to the ground on the windy side and will prevent the worst of any wind, without exposing the mesh on the other side. You may need a few extra pegs. Pegging this tent is essential in wind/rain. After a few uses you will find the best way.
It is "comfortable"" as long as you have adequate sleeping bags ( id recommend liners in the bags).
As reported there are some problems with condensation, but it does not leak into tent. Just a problem if you press the screen against the fly. I believe this is common with most small tents in cold environments and not just this tent.

Thanks for commenting TLSK, I'm looking to lighten up my gear after years of throwing it all on a motorcycle. Having to carry it on my back means I'm becoming very particular about weight. Take care mate.

    Thanks for sharing.
I agree, a clip-up system would work better.
We already have Summer taken care of; for both family and personal camping.
My current family is the Black Wolf Twin Turbo 240 - I really like that tent - and I have a Koda 4eV for personal (& or +1)- but that's a slide thru pole system - and I'm currently researching for Winter tent -and favouring the clip-up system.
The Hilleberg tents are awesome - but soooo expensive - so hoping for an Aussie solution.
We are going to attempt Snow camping this year - research, research, research.
Thought about Winterising the Koda with a tarp, but not convinced yet...

Hi Len. Wow, it's been a while. i don't take much of anything on the bike these days. I had a mid life crisis, sold the touring bike and bought a car! Still have one bike, but it's no tourer ;) When I made this video I did not even know how to change speeds, I do now. Great to hear from you mate, hope the shark is going well :)

AussieMark909 Mark, things are going OK. We officially retired a couple of weeks ago. We're now madly preparing the house for sale. painting and floors this and next week. then on the market! Bought another place tom retire to in the Blue Mountains in Lawson. Once we finish a couple of years of travel, (politely) kick out the tenants and move in! :)
Sharks x2 are in a state of flux. Pranged one badly in a rally (getting fixed now) the other needs a lot of mechanical work, well overdue. All things considered we're doing OK! lol! Playing a bit of Epoch on ARMA 3 sorta enjoying it .. sorta. Buggy POS that it is .. not too sure why I play it honestly. lol! Take care! Keep in touch! Len
