He had a younger brother, Ortho, who he loved. They weren't ever allowed off the island because they had to do their duty. You see, the island sits on The Underworld and they have to keep it from opening. It's a duty the Shroud has always had. To the actual sad backstory, Ortho died in a tragic accident when he was playing with Idia. That's what the visual at 2:52 represents.
