Stockholm: The Venice Of The North in 1936 in colour!

  • Interesting, software-enhanced, motion-stabilized, restored and AI colorized film about Stockholm (Sweden) in 1936. The speed of the film has been delayed by 30% to obtain the correct speed. Because of this, the audio has also been stretched and thus occasionally sounds a bit slurred.
Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden as well as its capital.
The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County [Wiki].
In 1936, the year of this film, an international Expo was held in Stockholm. In that year it had about half a million inhabitants. Nowadays that number has risen to 1.8 million in the urban areas.

Stockholm was one of few lucky cities that survived the horrors of WW2. Unfortunately, it's beautiful architecture was still destroyed in the name of "progress". It's sad to see ugly and bland buildings that now occupy many of the magnificent buildings we see in this video.

@@jungli2481 Nonsense. Population growth does not require ugly architecture.
Modernist architecture was - in the words of the leading architects - _ideologically_ motivated and made in a socialist spirit. They considered classic architecture to be "sentimental," religious and nationalistic and standing in the way for the new man.
One of them, French architect Le Corbusier, stated the goal of modernist architecture; _"We must produce a mass production state of mind."_ He also said; "said; _"a house is a machine for living in"._
Much more can be said on the topic, but the goal of hideous modernist architecture was ideological and political from the beginning.

most of the buildings featured in this video remain today... the parts that were renovated (usually slums) are not necessarily ugly just because they werent built over 200 years ago. PK-huset for example. What le corbusier wanted was horrid but its very reductive to call any form of modernism bad

The people who are still around that facilitated the removal of such buildings, outside of cases where there was a risk of the building collapsing or being structurally unsafe, should be in jail. They should have never been allowed to remove those beautiful buildings that were part of what made Stockholm the Venice of the North. I still think Stockholm is arguably one of the best if not the best European city otherwise.

It looks like a swampy field in the background but it is water in reality that connects the city to the Baltic Sea. And the church to the right is Riddarkyrkan which is not blue but more like made of bricks. Both Venice and Stockholm nowadays have dirty water.
