  • Cameron Johnson, senior partner at consulting firm TidalWave Solutions, says US tariffs, such as on personal protective equipment, don't hurt China much as Chinese firms can sell products much cheaper. He also discusses the difficulties gripping Chinese manufacturers. He speaks with Yvonne Man, David Ingles and Stephen Engle on "Bloomberg: The China Show."

Lots of places build EVs, such as the US, but only one place BUILDS EVs with a capital B. The US builds EVs in the same way that Lotus builds cars in a converted WW2 hanger in the UK, i.e small potatoes compared to the massive EV value chain China has built up over nearly 20 years. China will likely produce over 8 million EVs this year, while the US will produce 10 million CARS, with only a small percentage being EVs. Maybe if the US government goes all in on subsidizing its automotive sector like China did, the US can also build several million EVs per year, 15 years from now, but not today.

It is hilarious to me they think Tesla somehow taught the Chinese how to build EVs when Tesla didn't even set up their factory in China until 2020. So the ENTIRE Chinese automotive industry somehow stole all of Tesla's knowhow starting in 2020, and then ramped up their own production, overnight, and are now dominating the entire global EV market? Sure buddy, keep thinking that.
Maybe step back and consider the fact that Tesla's China factory almost outproduces their other three factories outside of China COMBINED. Why is that? Is it perhaps because only Tesla Shanghai has access to the largest, most comprehensive, and most sophisticated EV value chain in the world? Who built that supply chain? Tesla astutely went to China to take advantage the supply chain which already existed there in order to supercharge their own production and sales, not the other way around.

And you are missing the much LARGER forest behind the woods which much up for the US auto market. The fact is affordable quality Chinese EVs are here NOW, TODAY. And they can build a gazillion of them now that they've also cornered the global lithium battery market (and starting to build out the future sodium ion market too). So what are those Chinese automakers going to do when they are shut out of the US market? Spend all their energy sending their cars out to every other corner of the world of course.
Even 20 years ago, the already declining Detroit automotive industry still counted GM and Ford as the world's number 1 and number 2 selling automakers by annual sales. GM and Ford are now down to number 5 and number 6, as they pull out of one international market after another. Within the next 5 years, major Chinese brands such as BYD and SAIC will jump ahead of the Detroit 2 as well. If GM and Ford wants to continue to exist for another 100 years, should they face the Chinese competition head on and outcompete them as soon as possible all across the world? Or do they sit behind an American tariff wall, turn into small regional automakers, and milk every dollar out of making pickup trucks sold to American consumers with 8 year loans?
Perhaps it is a moot point and GM and Ford's decline is irrevocable, since China's manufacturing sector is just so much more competitive at building cars so the war is already lost, and the best you can hope for is putting up the tariffs to sunset the US auto industry slowly over time and keep those jobs going as long as possible. But either way, the tariffs indicate that you acknowledge that severe protectionist measures are the only thing left in the tank against a more competitive auto manufacturing economy across the pacific.

@@tren133 you are preaching to the choir. The tariffs are such a desperation move. The American auto dinosaurs are facing a Chinese manufacturing asteroid. I am salivating watching these EVs get cheaper and cheaper. Where I live there are BYDs and over Chinese brands all over our the roads. I love it.
