109. Dirt Cheap ABANDONED Project Catamaran - Should We Buy? [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

  • As far as I know this is the first Outremer model ever built. She is a very simple, fast, ocean going catamaran. Although she's in ROUGH shape and she'll never be as nice as a new catamaran, she does have potential to be a great racer/cruiser if someone is willing to put the time, money, and effort into restoring her. It's unfortunate that this project was abandoned by the previous owner, but it could be the perfect opportunity for someone to pick this boat up dirt cheap.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

When I saw the video I thought "Re-build the cabin to make it wider and give direct access to the hulls from upstairs" and if you had the space and time might be worth doing....but then I saw the price!!!! Probably worth $15k depending on transport costs and having somewhere to put it

The one positive of this catamaran is that it is probably fast sailing. The owner added the 3' sugar scoop extensions to reduce stern squatting and water turbulence to make it sail better/faster. The diesel tanks are midshp for balance purposes as anything further aft would cause stern squatting. The only other possible location for the diesel tanks would be in the aft section of those forward lockers. If this boat is in affluent Barrington RI, the owner had the bucks to add all the new stuff- this was probably a whim toy like a go fast car and now he/she just wants to get rid of it. Agree that the rigging and engines are the valuable parts of this cat.
The negatives are many and have been pointed out. Tulas Endless Summer youtubers bought a similar cat and fixed it up, but theirs had a much better layout in the hulls. But even they, in a recent post, liked the space in a more modern catamaran they visited. Adding a robust autopilot would be difficult given the design, only a tiller autopilot would work easily and they are less robust. This cat does not have most of the advantages of modern cats such as lots of living space, storage space, big galley, multiple heads, large cockpit, protected steering helm, protected easy entrance to hulls, engines in separate compartment or a sound insulated area.
Cat models I personally like and may be in your budget are Privilege 37 and Privilege 39 from the late 80's early 90's. A 37 sold for $75K a few years back in Mid Altlantic on Yachtworld. A 39 sold for $59K in S Fl 2 years ago on Craigslist and another in Tx for $85K on Ebay. They meet the rule of thumb of at least 35' LOA for offshore sailing and have a beam width that is at least 50% of LOA for stability, and have adequate bridgedeck clearance. So affordable well designed cats do come up for sale. See youtube Taking the Chance for couple sailing Priv 39 in Caribbean.

So to get another knot, knot-and-a-half of smooth-water speed they added quick-rotting pieces to the stern, screwed with the usability by putting diesel tanks where something else should go, and generally turned a turd into piece of shi--tte. Hmm, what's the diff between a turd and a piece of shi--tte? Answer - turds are all dried up, you can pick them up with a paper towel and throw them in a waste can; but shi--tte is a runny, smelly mess that you can't even try to clean up without getting it all over you and your clothes and everything you touch.
Approach no closer! Danger! Will Robinson! Danger!

Suggestions: 1. Consider relocating the diesel tanks to the centermost portions of the awthoroughtship voids which exist in each hull, then fit out heads where the tanks are now. Fit out your galley on one side and your stateroom on the other. Fit out a watermaker and companion FW tank on the galley side. Clean all interior areas with hi pressure washer with a trash pump to scavenge the bilge water buildup - like your dentist does when he is grinding on your tooth - no big deal. Repaint after full cleaning, drying and repairing as needed.. 2. cover the dagger board voids with a hinged plug - no biggie. 3. First do the exterior work which is required to launch. Second, reposition boat to a highly protected cheap shore birth with power, all of which is very near your residence - then conduct your interior and topside repairs while floating. Take your time - do things right - find an experienced and good natured mentor. The more you do yourselves, the better qualified you will become to operate and maintain your boat. Don't make anyone responsible for anything except yourselves. If you don't know something, learn it . . . You'll be just fine.

I like a lot of this. Seems like a lot of solid advice. But it also sounds like there is going to be a lot of old paint dust and plastic dust going into the water at that highly protected cheap shore birth with power. That seems like it would be much easier to avoid if the work was done on land instead.

I guess rose colored glasses work in the rain! I can't believe you wasted time discussing this "boat" after wasting a trip to RI. Look up 'SV Basik'. Teal and Lyhn bought a somewhat similar project, needing a full rebuild, but the hulls and cabin were structually sound, they knew what they were getting into, they had a good enough income duuring the project to never have to skimp on quality, Teal is a very talented and meticulous craftsman, they are now sailing on a beautiful cat-but the project took MANY, MANY YEARS!
This owner needs to drop the asking to 20k, and if it doesn't sell in six months sell the rigging, sails and motors, cut up and haul off the boat, and get out from under the yard fees. That should have been the plan years ago.

Randy learn about distilled vinegar and baking soda used together in the proper manner there is no need , your labor of scrubbing , if you let vinegar and baking soda do all the work !!!
Truly all that is needed for detoxing the mold and cleaning going in with vinegar 100% spraying it everywhere would clean the mold out in seconds !!! Then neutralize with baking soda with a quick wipe down is all that is needed if you give the vinegar and baking soda the time to work not jump on top of it expecting it to work in an instant give it the time it needs a day or two if need be shouldn't take much longer than that less time and days of scrubbing .
Wet stains baking soda first let dry then clean up with vinegar .
mold and dry stains I always use 100% distilled vinegar let stand for at least 24 Hours come back in moisten and again with vinegar and then Dust with baking soda let stand at least 12 hours Come Back Inn wipe off clean up with clean water and always 100% cotton cleaning rags do the best job no need for the endless irresponsible use of paper towels.
I do not use the disposable rubber or plastic gloves I have some good rubber gloves a couple of pairs for handling chemical and oily messes they are around $10 a pair and they have lasted me well over 25 years over buying rubber disposable nonsense. all I've done to maintain them is wash them in distilled vinegar after every use and they just as new today as they were 25 years ago .

I'd take it. Plywood bulkheads are easily removed and be ones made and glassed in. Noticed the wiring system seems very tidy. Getting down from deck to cockpit... Few grp steps can be made. If the decks are double core it's easy to pump epoxy resin inside. Other than that just some cleaning repainting and minor building work. Definitely could negotiate on the price if your good at pointing out all the negatives...

"Symmetrical evidence of damage" What I think it means is the foam inside is saturated, the water has found, or is still finding the lowest point, hence all the rot in those areas. I could just see an enormous amount of work required to fix this thing. It's weird they fitted new gear to it to try and sell it rather than fix the basics first.
It's a shame so many people buy boats then neglect their maintenance, but people do the same with cars too.
Engines are worth $3,562.00 each or so, so $7124 in engines there, and rigging, maybe $8000, so value sitting there is $15124, the rest of the boat is liability. Better off buying a boat in good shape with no engines and needs rigging.

All I can figure is they started out and ran out of money before finishing the hull or found out how bad the water intrusion was. It takes hundreds of hours just to redo the roof and the stern additions. Fiberglass is not fun and it is a real pain in the ass to replace it. The fiberglass may be easier than getting it ready to fiberglass. If not for the engines I would not take it if free. lol

You can often find "cheap" cruising boats in Hawaii, at the Ala Wai or Sand Island Marinas.
These are often fully outfitted, and fresh in from their passage from the Mainland, during which the owners had their dream of islands in the sun dissolve under the repeated onslaughts of seasickness, trying to cook sailing dead downwind and constantly rolling the gunwales under in 8-10 foot tradewind swells, exhausting watch-on watch-off living (most of these are couples, many don't get additional crew to handle the watches or work), and generally the shock to their systems from finding out that cruising is not the same as a weekend out to Catalina Island and back.
Depending on how desperate they are, how badly the marriage broke up after the voyage, and how long the boat has sat unsold, you can often pick up a name yacht that would have cost you $350,000 from a brokerage in Southern Cali for under $100,000. Sad but true; I've been an island resident since '76 when I singlehanded in to Hawaii from the Marquesas on a 37-footer I built myself.
    With Warm Aloha, Tim

Have a look at a Gemini 105M or 105MC. A fixer upper can be picked up for a pretty good price and they are a great small catamaran. I have a 1997 that I converted to an outboard and it is a perfect size for my small family. At 34' long by 14' wide it fits in regular slips and so we don't pay the high docking fees of most other catamarans.

If the decision to do a refit of an existing boat has been decided(which I would highly recommend over building your own), might you look at hurricane damaged boats? Although the expense over time would be closer to that of good condition ready to cruise boat, the cost is diffused over the course of the refit and thus easier to manage. I have seen many boats(both cat and mono) which are within the 10 year age range that would be ideal for a DIY refit. I have been considering this myself as I search for a cruising boat in the 38'-48' range. Old boats will always be old boats no matter how much work you do to them. A newer hull has the benefit of advanced construction methods that are tried and true, something you cannot replicate without extensive time and commitment over the course of 3-5 years. Whereas, you could finish the refit of a hurricane damaged boat in a year if you spent all your spare time working on it. The knowledge amassed over the course of that time is invaluable and at the end have a boat which is designed exactly to your needs and will hold its value and integrity for years to come.

Interesting, I can see the potential of this fine craft. With the new engines, mast and standing rigging I do not think you would have over $125,000 in refurbishing this vessel. Man-hours would not exceed 8500. When all is said and done you would have a cat that is unsuitable for extending sailing and living aboard. A great project because you are both young. If you plan on your sailing adventure to start sometime in your 50s go for it. Another great vid!

That thing needs a LOT of work. If I had a spare $45k or so burning a hole in my pocket, I would:
    1) Hire a pro inspector to find everything wrong with it and determine that it's actually possible to salvage into something safe to use
    2) Move those diesel tanks into the storage bins above the engines (which are far too small for my liking but no point upgrading until it's confirmed usable) and put heads where they're supposed to go
    3) Gut that entire center room and rebuild properly into living(ish)room, including an enclosed wheelhouse. Redo the roof in the process with all fiberglass
    4) at least cover that entire rear walk, if not totally enclose. Double tillers would get replaced for getting in the way of main walkway, with more protection when desired at the main steering position
    5) Tear off those 3' extensions, there are less makeshift ways to get good easy water access for swimming/etc.
    6) Scrub out the front lockers, and convert one or both into small offices, kid's rooms, or similar. Or even just spare pantries for more durable goods. Probably one of each
    7) Improve the side railings significantly, and add some flavor of cover over the daggerboards that keeps you from twisting an ankle when they're in the down position. Also rubberized stick-on mats everywhere.
    8) Upgrade the berths with some $100 memory foam full size mattresses or similar, with wall TVs and those bed-cushions so they can be used as a hangout area. Add privacy curtains, and upgrade the space around them to actually provide bedroom amenities. Possibly make hatches into the hulls seal if still able to get water to them after whatever walkway upgrades
    9) Upgrade rigging to be remotely operated, because sometimes one person has to sail solo because injury/illness, and also because sometimes it's just crappy outside, but that's more a nicety than a necessity.
It's kind of a meh layout and needs a lot of work, but if you had a space to put it while you did so you could make a pretty decent house out of it (if you could get it cheap enough). I've heard more than a few stories of people buying a big cheap old ship that's barely fit to leave the harbor but otherwise sound and just using it as a house for college because local marina fees were a fraction of what any rent would be. This looks pretty seaworthy, so even beyond that usage you could get a real nice thing out of it, once it was all said and done

Former Rhode Islander, Go Bruins! Seriously though, this boat needs to be parted out. Outremer have come a LONG way (La Vagabonde), yet they have always been very efficient and fast boat designs. What I wish for you two, as a young couple hooked on sailing, beyond winning the lottery, is that you find yourself in a position where you can either finance a decent used catamaran (because I think that's what you want) or a situation where you could build a Wharram or Woods design, et. al, to your specs. It's the traditional time vs. money thing... I suggest you keep this business model you now have (because stranger on the Internet), if it offers any surplus of time or money, to work to that goal. Maybe you need two channels, a DIY and broker/rep type?
As you probably already know, the Wharrams don't have a meaningful bridgedeck enclosure, they are really twin canoes (channel Lucky Fish), like this boat, but the Woods cats do. Speaking to this boat specifically, the cost to cut away the pilothouse and replace the deck gelcoat or underlayment is absurd, especially because you'd have to relocate to do it, or just as bad, motor the beast to your preferred location and haul it out. Appended sugarscoops are never a good idea. There's a lot of up force on a fast cat's aft end. Outremer's engineers are not stupid, there is a reason they didn't add skinny extensions to the aft of their design. It costs speed and adds weight; their engineers are famous for their quote: to take the toothbrush and cut it in half!

Just had another thought. I think you guys enjoy showing boats more than sailing which is fine. You need to go ahead and make it legal and get boat brokers licenses if required for your state. Then have a standard contract to give featured boats owners or brokers that they will pay you a marketing fee if it sells after your video. Brokers typically share fees with other brokers so do it. Also, always use the go pro. You need Tue really wide angle to seethe baits. Sometimes you focus on your wife while she talks about the boat and don't show what she is talking about.

A little history is in order. This type of boat was an outgrowth of the rage for racing catamarans from the late 1970s and well into the 1980s. It was built for racing, not cruising and was built for a very limited life. A multihull builder once told me that if it does not break occasionally you made it too heavy. If I owned it and you offered me 40,000 you would have a deal and I would be dancing in the streets.

Interesting video. It caught my eye because we have recently bought a 40ft Gerard Danson catamaran, of a later design, which we are refitting. I can see a few similarities,
This boat would be hard (but not impossible) to rework as regards the accommodation layout for cruising and living. The forward lockers (once cleaned ) would be suitable for fenders and sails, but potentially, you could store too much forward, while there is not much storage aft, leading to a poorly balanced boat with a risk of tipping forward.

Where to begin. First, thank you for reviewing the boat. It is a valuable lesson even though you spent money to go up and look at it. Clearly it is worthless. Bet there is an outstanding yard bill and It goes up for a sheriff's sale. Clearly a stripper. You noted the hull were solid fiberglass...but what kind of glass is it? Again probably worthless. And the boat would probably blow up a moisture meter. The only thing I know about catamarans is what I learned on RUclips. I am a power boat guy(did own a sailboat for five years).... but is having those fuel tanks in the very front of the twin hulls a good design? Why would someone install new engines, rigging and sails before assessing what it would cost to fix up the boat if possible? From a design perspective it looks like a poorly designed kit boat. The cockpit and hull access are awful. I did find the comments below very entertaining. A boat you will love is out there waiting to be found. Wishing you all the best of luck.

New Outremer's have fuel and water on the bridge deck adjacent to the main beam, fuel tanks where they are is a bit of a waste of space, forward lockers simply cut out the main bulkheads and ring frame in solid glass and extend the living space, usually heads forward, would recommend fire rated or rigid SS fuel lines. Coach house roof and hull extensions are cut off and start again, would also recommend a light composite compression post from the forebeam to the bridge deck and move the windlass to the centre of the boat on the main beam, so lots of work but all doable, probably 12 months worth of weekends, flowcoat all the internals but would make a most excellent project at the right price. new Yanmar 15s are about 3.5K USD each, new rig maybe about 20K USD including new sails, boat as it stands maybe about 10K USD, so fair offer around 40K USD which is probably way less than the broker is asking for.
