When I was just a kid a local department store had this sitting in a corner. I thought it was awesome then, but it sure has not aged well.

I don’t remember ever seeing this one in arcades. But then, I don’t remember a lot of games from 1980. Every so often I’d see a Space Invaders cabinet. I guess Berzerk was one. Pac-Man, obviously.
That mechanic of using different ships for your lives is interesting. It’s too bad they don’t give you the option of getting them back.

By the time I was playing in arcades (early to mid 90s) it was pretty much all Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, etc. Almost all fighting games at that point although you could probably still find Pac Man and other 80s classics. Never even heard of Moon Cresta until recently when I was researching Terra Cresta.
Anyway, the only shmup I ever remember seeing a lot back then was Raiden.

Oh man I was actually pretty lucky when it came to shmups in the early 90s (to 94 - after that it was all college). There was an arcade near the mall where my friends and I used to go see movies. It had Carrier Airwing, R-Type Leo, an old Silkworm machine, Galaga ‘88, and I think a Raiden machine (not sure if it was the original, DX, or II). Oh and a Neo-Geo cabinet with Pulstar? Or was that later? I say lucky because there was another arcade in the same mall, but it was all light gun games and fighting games.
College was cool because there was a selection of cabinets in the student center next to the bowling lanes. There was a Strikers 1945 machine, plus one other vertical shmup that I can’t remember. And then randomly, in one of my dorms, a Thunder Cross cabinet.
If only I hadn’t needed quarters for laundry. Instead I had to settle for watching other people play.

@@Peter_Morris Man you were lucky with that selection. Honestly I wasn't really into shmups so much back then so it very well could be that I just didn't know what was out there. I was obsessed with street fighter and mortal kombat which took up all my quarters lol.

This may be a poser to Namco's Galaxian, bit this unique combination is much different than Galaga.
