- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- We see the results after one month of aging bourbon at home in a mini barrel. Part two of the series after I put Buffalo Trace Wheated Mash into a mini oak barrel. Great results so far in both color and taste. We will see how it does with one more month of aging.

Wow, that's really good color after only one month...I wouldn't have expected that.
BCR - yeah I was a bit surprised. Think it will take a while longer for the taste to catch up to the color.
Scott, just discovered your channel, can tell already I’m gonna enjoy your stuff. You earned a new subscriber.
Coby. Thank you very much. Appreciate the kind words.
Got to catch up on your vids. Was on vacation with the family. Quite fascinating with the changes after a month of aging. Looking forward to the follow up vid come next month.
Dude - I was most impressed with the color. Taste is heading in the right direction. Will see what another month brings.
Wow I was shocked at the color difference, this looks like a really fun project
Thanks Glenn. I have enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching
Happy with the results after one month. Have any of you had success barrel aging bourbon at home?
Scott if I age it in a 2 litre barrel for about a year beyond the recommended time frame would it taste to Oaky or would that be okay?
@@ABCDEF-hl1rf It all depends on each barrel as each one if always different than the next, no two barrels give the same flavor. 3 to 4 months aging is a pretty close time frame for a char 3 two litre barrel on its first use. Every whiskey is different and depending on what it is, it may take longer to mellow it out than others.
@@Tonnsfabrication Ah okay that makes sense. I'll be using a local unaged whiskey. It's called Drumlish Poteen Carolina Whiskey made at a local distillery in town.
Just waiting for my barrel to come in now so will keep you posted at the 3month mark
@@ABCDEF-hl1rf I normally don't get barrels with the spigot hole drilled, they just end up leaking. Also when you install the bung don't be taking it in and out, let it seal up and leave it alone or it will leak, once you remove it ,the seal is never the same. When the barrel goes through its normall barometric changes it forces the liquid in and out of the char into the staves which is how you get better whiskey. When the barrel leaks the pressure ain't doing its thing , to add to the misery all your product is dripping onto the floor. At any given time I usually have 20 barrels with something in them. I like these little Mexican barrels to play with but my favorite are the Barrel mill 5 gal, those things do not leak.
@@Tonnsfabrication I did come across the Barrel Mill brand although the smallest they had was the 5 gallon and as a beginner I wanted to tread the hobby slowly before fully commiting to it. I ordered the 2 litre barrel from RedHead Barrels. Depending on the area and temperature it's stored in if there is some evaporation did you open the bung and top it off every 1-2 weeks? If you have any other brand recommendations let me know. In regards to the Mexican barrels what brand are they?
I’ve been doing this in 3 ltr barrels. I get about a 20% product evaporation after 2 months. I used Bulliet 95 proof and it’s much smoother but substantially lower proof.
Very interesting. Thanks.
Love the explanations for prep, then the test pour a month later! Do you have an opinion on double aging, say a Cooppers Craft or similar for 2-4 weeks? Love your videos, cheers!
Nallen I have not tried double aging. Sounds interesting. May give it a try. Thanks for watching.
Can’t wait to see how it continues to change! Thanks for the update!
It has been interesting!
Very interesting! Can’t wait to see what another month does.
PP - thanks. I will actually be updating after only two weeks. Stay tuned!
Interesting results Scott. How long is the stuff you buy in the store typically aged for ?
Tylonn - typically between 2-4 years. Some much more. Due to the high surface area to volume ratio of the small barrels, two months in the small barrel is about equal to a year in a big 55 gallon barrel.
Ahhh that’s really interesting. I bet that @ 6-8 months it will be at its best! Just a guess though
So man, here's the trick. The next few times it will smooth out to your liking. Just go with the flow, people say small barrels don't work but they do....
Matt - I agree. Thanks for the encouragement and for watching
That’s so sick dude I just started
