I just finished Dusk this morning and I thought it was beyond amazing - it’s moved to my second favourite Robbie Arnott book. I think you will love it too x
That thumbnail is amazing. Best facial expression ever! I read The House of Broken Bricks earlier this year. It’s really thought-provoking. I’ve heard only raves about The Night Alphabet but alas there is no US publication date. and Dusk is actually being published in the US but not until August. I still have my reading mojo going so far and am really keen to get to the new Niall Williams and the new Pat Barker before the end of the year.
Dusk is out here in August too, he’s moved publishers which is interesting. And shockingly… the UK cover is a BANGER, so I’ll have to get another copy of it when that comes out.
Oh yes, do Martyr and Dusk both great. Maybe you could sneak in The Coast Road, it was unputdownable. Read it in a couple of hours in one sitting. Happy Reading 🙂
I think I may save them all for next year as, apart from my pick for book club on Patreon and Fingersmith over Christmas, dare I say I think my reading might be done for the year. GASP!
I buy books that I feel desperate to read. and then I just don't get to them. Sometimes actual years go by. I tell myself that buying books and actually reading them are two separate hobbies.
Hello Simon, Just had a bit of a Savidge Reads binge, and got caught up to your recent video. I had a good reading year and surpassed my goal of 40 books and read or listened to 49. I read a handful that were memorable and/or meaningful. I need to blow past my obsessive need to complete a book and start to DNF more often. A good goal for 2025. Very much enjoyed your non-bookish content especially Christmas tree 🌲 and seeing Misters Earl and Biscuit settle in for long winters’ naps. Enjoy the season and thanks for lovely content all year long. ❤
Lovely for you to have a binge, thank you lol. Well done on surpassing your goal and here’s to your DNF more goal for 2025. Glad you enjoyed the Christmas tree. I’m planning on more non bookish content in weekly vlogs next year. Just to mix it up a bit.
I really enjoyed Martyr!! One book that I really thought I would read this year (but with the holidays and my other reading plans I can tell that I will not) is North Woods by Daniel Mason… maybe in January. Also, I don’t know if this makes you feel any better, but you just added The House of Broken Bricks to my tbr - it sounds excellent 😊
Spookily I will be heading to North Woods this weekend as it’s my Patreon Book Club’s December read. I am looking forward to it, have heard amazing things. Hope we both enjoy The House of Broken Bricks!
I know what you mean. I was stupidly busy in November, and I comforted myself by making a list of 'light' books (including christmassy books) that I wanted to unwind with later. But then I actually just go off reading for a bit. Lovely, even if a bit overwhelming, to have so many books that are exciting ❤
I really wanted to read "The Bee Sting" and "Wolf Hall" and didn't get to them partly because they are both pretty lengthy. I have them both and will definitely read in January... This is silly but I'm close to reading 100 books this year so I've finished out the year with mostly shorter books. I'm way beyond my initial reading goal and it really doesn't matter but I'm just close to a first time reading 100 so going for it! From your list...I read "Martyr" and "The Coast Road" and enjoyed both. "Saltblood" is on my Christmas wish list but no buyers yet!
I enjoyed both The Coast Road and Cinema Love. They both introduced me to times and places I was pretty unfamiliar with and filled those places with interesting characters. I recommend them both. I’m now in the middle of five books I want to finish before the end of the year and am already obsessing about which book to start on Jan. 1. People have to stop inviting me to holiday parties and the like so I can read!
Ha. I don’t have the excuse of a busy social calendar for my lack of reading this month, we can’t all be super popular lol, I’m just shattered I think. Ready for some rest to refresh for a new year.
I really enjoyed Martyr! and The Coast Road. I defo think you will too. And it’s very relatable to hear you talk about setting reading goals and then rebelling against yourself, lol, I’m the same. And then when I push myself, I feel like that’s when a slump can set in. Anyway, books I thought I’d read this year and still (!!) haven’t are Close to Home by Michael Magee, Betty by Tiffany McDaniel, Juno Loves Legs by Karl Geary, Just by Looking at Him by Ryan O’Connell and most of all Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson (just to name a few…..) -Can’t wait for your thoughts on The House of Broken Bricks - whenever you choose to read it 🥰
Juno Loves Legs… why have I not read that? I loved his first book. Silly me. Close to Home was a book I was desperate to get, never did and then decided I didn’t want to read at all WITH ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON. Hahaha. Betty I really want to read. I very much enjoyed Just By Looking at Him.
So glad you picked up the Hardcastle book- have you read their first one, published under dead name? It’s called Below Deck and it’s HAUNTING. I have salt blood and sigh, haven’t touched it in months. Apparently a lot of their story has been debunked but I’m still gonna enjoy it. Still waiting for the paperback Monstrilio here in WA. Did your mum have you young? I had mine young and it’s great now I’m older.
I may still have Below Deck on my shelves, they need a good sort, though I wonder if I’ve unhauled it because of my boat aversion. Time a bookshelf sort will tell! That said I’m not sure I would want to read it until they republish it as Dylin Hardcastle which I’ve not seen any signs of happening here yet. Hmmm. A quandary.
Just got The Coast Road from the library. Perfect timing with your video. I’ve been looking for a new book. There’s just so many books that come out every year you can’t possibly keep up 😂. I also need to get to Martyr.
There are, and I know this may sound shocking from me who loves books so much, waaaay too many books that come out each year I think. It’s mad. If you averaged it out it’s over 100 a day apparently.
That's a good list! I read 'Saltblood' (technically listened to) a few months back and I loved it! I enjoy books set on ships, so I already had that going for me, but I haven't found the ship bits boring in the least. It was really engaging, I almost listened to the whole thing in one go - the main character's voice is captivating, it's such an amazing journey we go on with her, the secondary characters are all really compelling as well..There are very interesting reflections on gender, on relationships, on women's role in society, so if you're looking for some food for thought, you'll find it here as well. I can't say enough good things about it - 100% worth the read!
I think because I just find being on a big boat trip quite dull from experience that’s where part of it comes from. Also some books explain every single bolt and screw of a ship and I’ve no time for that… weirdly I would really like to go on a cruise at some point though. How odd. Looking forward to Saltblood very much though.
Loved The Burial Plot a perfect gothic winter read. And I listened to The Night Alphabet as it was recommended by Kate W . An extraordinary novel read by the author who is a poet and very thought provoking. So pleased I read it and a book I think I will return to.
Will be very interested to hear your thoughts on The Coast Road when you get around to it. It's also lingering unread on my shelf for longer than I expected.
The House of Broken Bricks was so good. I read it on Mercedes' recommendation and it's a novel that I still think about. Whereas one book that I gave 5 stars at the beginning of the year - I don't remember anything about!!
I just finished a culture clash corker: You Dreamed of Empires by Álvaro Enrigue (translated by Natasha Wimmer). An absolute riot! I've never read a book of its ilk. Thanks for the video.
I'm so confused about why I still haven't read Demon Copperhead. It was such a phenom in 2023 that I wanted to wait until the whole hype had gone down so that I would be able to enjoy it without any bias. However, still haven't gotten to it. Maybe I'll make it my first of 2025.
The one I’ve read and highly recommend on audio is The Coast Road by Alan Murrin It’s based on the real fishing port of Killybegs in Donegal ☘️🍀 I’ve started Martyr! but it’s one of 5 books only half read , that I need to finish before 2025.
Hahaha but Jacqueline, as we discuss often, you know I can’t do fiction on audio. Well not new books anyway, hopefully rereading some Sarah Waters on audio will go some way to rectifying or building on that!
The Coast Road is getting a lot of love on the comments. Making me all the more eager to read it. I’m also very keen for the Williams. No idea how they’ve both gone unread this year.
Book in my physical nightstand TBR I’m surprised I’ve not read yet : Enter Ghosts I’m not sure why …. I think I got caught up in Booker sooner than I typically do and therefore fell off my typical WP list rabbit hole …. Perhaps bc the Booker was so female writer dominated 🥳??
I'm shocked that I stil have not read Terry Practchett's biography (Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes). It was top of the list when I purchased it in September and then with Non-Fiction November coming up, it gave me an excuse to read it, but I was naughty and kept borrowing more books from the library and having to prioritize those because of due dates. I'm also surprised I have not read James yet (Percival Everett). I do have it on loan from the library, so this should just be a matter of time but this might only get read in the new year.
Hahaha. I love that some of us feel naughty for borrowing/buying/reading other books when really it’s not naughty at all. Lol. James is very good. I think about it quite a bit since reading it.
I have some very good books that I stopped reading - probably because I had library books with deadlines - and never got back to again. I do want to go back to them: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell (bought UK edition because the US edition had a less-appealing cover), and Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. I’m closest to finishing the Zevin novel and would like to fish it this year; I’ll hope to read the other two next year, probably starting from the beginning.
I haven’t read a word for two weeks while battling with the lurgy everyone seems to have had. I don’t feel guilty but I never feel right if I don’t have a book on the go,
Glad that you don’t feel guilty, we shouldn’t really. I totally understand the not feeling right without a book though. Hope you’re feeling your most fabulous soonest!
My list is too long - the more I want to read a book the less likely I am to pick it up - isn't that silly. I haven't read any of these but I just added The Burial Plot and Saltblood to my list, they sound amazing.

I think if you’ve no concept of time you’ve a fabulous excuse for not reading them 🤣 The Savidge Prompts call out will be next week and then we will film the reveal over Christmas to go out the last week of the year!!!! A little later than planned but mum and I haven’t seen each other since the start of November and won’t until Christmas Eve. And yes was Jessie Burton’s The House of Fortune. I saw Brittany Bathgate talking about this… it’s about getting books and letting them marinate on the shelves for just the right time.

Dusk is a super quick read and I wholly recommend it. It's probably my second fave Robbie Arnott book too!
Oooh exciting. I’m looking forward to it. Though I hope it’s not too quick as once I start I’ll not want it to end.
I really enjoyed Martyr!! Loved, loved, loved The Coast Road!

You'll love Martyr! I'm saving Robbie for Christmas Day slow down. My special treat for myself.
Awww that’s nice. I’m debating saving Dusk for my first read of next year. Maybe.
I really enjoyed Martyr! and The Coast Road. I defo think you will too. And it’s very relatable to hear you talk about setting reading goals and then rebelling against yourself, lol, I’m the same. I’m really looking forward to getting to it… at some point.
The Coast Road is fantastic, 5 star!
Fab to hear how much so many of you have loved it.
Great video! Thank you! I predict you will
Love THE COAST ROAD and CINEMA LOVE!
I’m looking forward to those two very much! Well I’m looking forward to them all obviously hahaha. Those two I think could be particular highlights.
It’s always good to reignite your bookish fire by writing a list 📚❤️They do all look great.
Funny you mention that as my reading has really slowed down this month but this made me want to get back to reading loads.
The coast road is a top read this year for me and I only read in December late contender !!!!
Oooh it must be good!
So glad you picked up the Hardcastle book- have you read their first one, published under dead name? It’s called Below Deck and it’s HAUNTING.

Ha. Mine isn’t lingering. It’s literally waving at me everytime I see it. But so are all of the books I mentioned. Hahaha.
The House of Broken Bricks was so good. I read it on Mercedes' recommendation and it's a novel that I still think about. Whereas one book that I gave 5 stars at the beginning of the year - I don't remember anything about!!
I love it when a novel lingers! Mercedes does give some impeccable recs.
I just finished a culture clash corker: You Dreamed of Empires by Álvaro Enrigue (translated by Natasha Wimmer). An absolute riot! I've never read a book of its ilk. Thanks for the video.
Oooh a culture clash corker. I like the sound of that. Hahaha. I’ll look it up.
I started reading Flames by Robbie Arnott, thanks for the tip.❤
A pleasure. Hope you love Arnott as much as I do.
I really hope Dusk has the same cover when it's published in the UK and Ireland 😬 One of the most gorgeous covers I've seen in a long time
It doesn’t. They’ve finally released it. BUT I actually think it’s a really really really cool cover so I’ll have to get that one too. Hahaha.
I'm so confused about why I still haven't read Demon Copperhead. It was such a phenom in 2023 that I wanted to wait until the whole hype had gone down so that I would be able to enjoy it without any bias. However, still haven't gotten to it. Maybe I'll make it my first of 2025.
Maybe all the chatter could have been part of the reason as you said, hype can be good when it first buzzes but too much can put me right off. Lol.

The Coast Road by Alan Murrin

I read cinema love when I was in New York recently loved it
Ooh what a place to read it. I miss New York soooo much. But will have to miss it for another four years now!
Book in my physical nightstand TBR I’m surprised I’ve not read yet :
Enter Ghosts
I’m not sure why …. I think I got caught up in Booker sooner than I typically do and therefore fell off my typical WP list rabbit hole …. Perhaps bc the Booker was so female writer dominated 🥳??
I wouldn’t over analyse it. Just enjoy what you’re enjoying and get to the books you want when you can and the mood takes.
The Night Alphabet and The Coast Road were stand outs for this year. I did like Saltblood, yes very queer.
Sounds like I’ve some corking reads ahead!

I’m very much looking forward to it!
There are some corkers here. So some to look forward to if you do get back to them. I haven’t even started any of these!
@ Oh, I thought for sure you had read Hamnet! I think I found out about it from your channel. 🙂
@@Laura_D I have. I meant you had started all the books you mentioned unlike me who hadn’t started any of the books I talked about in the video.
@ Ahhhhh, that makes total sense. Perhaps I should wait to converse until I am fully awake next time? 🥱😁📚
I don’t think it’s silly, well maybe a little… but we all do it so at least we’re all silly together - well if not all, a LOT of us!
Dusk is wonderful, maybe it would be a good way to start 2025
That’s what I’ve been pondering. Though that’s also a lot of pressure, even on a book I’m sure I’m going to love. Hmmm. A conundrum. It’s finally got a UK and US release date! August 2025.
I also wanted to get to The Night Alphabet, and I went to add Saltblood to my want to read, only to find it was already on there! Is it the House of Fortune by Jessie Burton you're reading? Or another one? ALSO I'm puzzling-panning books for the Buzzwordathon + Cover challenge by BooksandLala and plenty of these could fit for that next year! (Transportation, Eyes, Things) When are the Savidge Prompts coming? 👀 And to answer your question, I'm kind of shocked about all the books on my tbr, that I didn't get to them, because I have no concept of time.
I think if you’ve no concept of time you’ve a fabulous excuse for not reading them 🤣
The Savidge Prompts call out will be next week and then we will film the reveal over Christmas to go out the last week of the year!!!! A little later than planned but mum and I haven’t seen each other since the start of November and won’t until Christmas Eve. And yes was Jessie Burton’s The House of Fortune. A perfect read for while I was in Amsterdam and while I had the holiday blues after.
@ Thanks! Looking forward to the prompts, it’ll be my first year joining in. I’m hoping to get to House of Fortune next year, it’s sitting patiently on my shelf.
I’m surprised (and a bit annoyed with myself) that I haven’t read ‘James’ yet.
Don’t be annoyed at yourself. Just see it as a fabulous read ahead!
'It's rained loads since I've got this book' 😂
Facts are facts 🤣🤣🤣
I have yet to see a 'booktuber' post a video of them reviewing all the books they read on their previously stated TBR video. lol.. I'm thinking that's because it just doesn't happen. Let's face it, I think most of us on or off booktube are indeed mood readers. Reading something out of a sense of obligation just feels like work rather than leisure, am I right? Cheers.
I think that another reason I don’t tend to do TBR videos (I guess haul videos are technically additions to the never ending TBR videos hahaha) because a) contrary fairy b) it starts to feel like a task which even reading for work by whim (though obvs with a deadline of sorts) doesn’t feel.
Wow, Monstrilio traveled thousands of miles with me just for you to NOT read it, Simon. What would Earl say.
I think he’d just say that the book needs to marinate on the shelves for just the right time. He’s very chill.
