+Sharla in Japan I don't know if it's consciously or not but it seems that you are doing that thing about positive reinforcement while talking with a lot of "right", "ok", "cool" like Japanese people do :)
+Sharla in Japan GLOOMY BEAR!
+Wailor Castellano well I have been here for almost 9 years now xD
I grew up wanting to be an manga-ka, but I decided to do animation to create my own anine serise. I am now a professional animator. I also speak, read and write Japanese. I will be competing againts other Japanese applicants who are animators soon. Thanks for this video. I will keep in mind about having a leg up as a foreigner when competing againts other Japanese applicants in the animation industry.
JaejoongPrincess good luck to you!

Please update! How's it going? I'm a Swede who's moving to Japan next year to study animation, do you have any advice?
It's always nice to hear success stories. She clearly deserves all of her success because she's so talented and really worked for it. Nice video!
Yes I love this! I've been training myself for 2 years so far just to work mangaka, I've been confiding myself to small work areas, I've been reading an analyzing stories, writing and drawing everyday, holding myself to deadlines, and the such. I'm so ready. I'm entering a competition held by the publisher I want to work under early next year and if all goes well I'm going to fly to visit an editor. Im so ready for this I'm willing to leave everything behind and move. I guess the most important thing about being a mangaka is dedication. You're working so much for so long for almost no pay, so you HAVE to love it or you'll be screwed. If I'm ever a success I'll encourage everyone who has the same dream to try!
+arcadegel Best of luck to you!!!! :D
+Sharla in Japan Thank you so much! ( ^ω^ )
+Eyo Thank you! (*^^*)
Update please
Any updates
Looks cool, I might check it out! :3

C'mon joey, you know you want to (^◇^;)

Who is this pokemon
Simple. If you don't mind living in a closet size apartment and having cheap meals, you can be a manga artist. Or am I thinking of Animator?
Both? LoL
+AnimeFlyz Depends on the Mangaka themselves, if they're one of the big tiers like Kishimoto Toriyama or Oda. But yeah Japan pays their TV animators like literal shit.
+AnimeFlyz Except many people live in small homes and eat cheap food there, but... you get to live in Japan. Low crime, nice atmosphere, fresh seafood, unique culture... it's not all bad...
Kawaii TV japanese men drink a hell of alot. I have been to japan once and they were partying like crazy.
Kawaii TV yeah pretty much. They can hold their liquor pretty well
*Believe in yourself and just do it* Ignore all those naysayers and dreamcrushers and take action, if you want to be manga artist then go for it.
thank you, the internet needs more comments like this ^.^
I WILL BECOME A MANGAKA IN JAPAN
CAUSE I BELIEVE IN MY SELF
GAMBATEE~! MAKE US PROUD!! O(≧∇≦)O
+monokuma sama Don't believe in yourself, believe in me who believes in you
+monokuma sama WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!! you can do it!!!

Good luck :3
I would love to be a manga artist the only crucial part that I'm missing is the artistic part ;_;
+Otaku Ana HAHAH XD
+ItZxPaYDaYx yah I know that's why I said i would love too
+Eyo XD thanks! I think I could do the story part :) I love writing and that would be so nice to see one of my story ideas come to life so maybe I'll do that :)
+Otaku Ana If you work hard at it I'm sure you could. I'm not nearly where I want to be with my art but I'm working on it every day. Keep your dream in your heart and shoot for the stars!
+Fantasy Morpher wow thank you so much! XD good luck to you too :)
Thankyou so much for this video!♡ I'm currently studying graphic design in Finland, drawing is my passion and i love drawing manga. I've plan to move to Japan after i'm graduated so who knows if oneday i'll be an manga artist in Japan too :)
Great video!♡
I'm a writer who hopes to one day collaborate with a professional Japanese mangaka.
Take a fucking number
Me too!
Same!😃 Good luck!
Hope we can work together coincidentally 🤌🏻
at first I was really excited cause I miss read the title, I thought it said MANGO ARTIST not manga, and I was like oh awesome I've never seen a MANGO artist, but the I watched it and was like oh.
HAHA
WOW!
She is very impressive! What an amazing goal to accomplish :3
There is one college called Kyoto Seika university which has the faculty of Manga in Kyoto. Popular mangakas are teaching how to draw interesting manga.
+FoolishStrawberry
Why? Have you studied there?
+FoolishStrawberry
If you have ability to draw interesting manga, school is money wasting. If you don't have such ability, school has significance. Such is school.
+Lovely Lunar
What do you think is the reason that illustration is better than manga?
+Lovely Lunar
Hmmmm! There is such a division, isn't there though I don't think majority of manga writers are making manga for money?
From my understanding, if one says they want to be a manga artist, it not only means to draw in the style that is popular in Japan, but to also have a strong grasp on Japanese culture, the language, and in turn be able to reach a Japanese audience (hence the desire to live in the country as well). So that could be a complicated goal for some who doesn't think beyond wanting to draw in "manga style". You have to know your audience, especially if you're intent on publishing work in Japan. Now, the second best option is to do manga inspired work as a side occupation and using social media platforms like DeviantArt, Pixiv, Tumblr, and Patreon to market and sell your fanart and original work. The latter option is usually better for those who can't afford travel, school tuition, and live in Japan for long periods of time, as well as the added time needed to learn the language. Doing/learning to draw manga style as a side job/hobby allows you to work at your own pace (and learn the language as well), and may work for some people.
Morikun Rinari Yana (kuroshitsuji/black butler) and Arakawa (full-metal Alchemist) are 2 mangakas that come to mind who focuses on a more western audience instead. Isayama's (Attack on Titan (don't feel like spelling out the Japanese name T~T)) style is different, and from what I gathered, I believe the characters are primarily German? (I don't really know) I suppose it's either get really good at both art and story telling, or just storytelling in general. (Story played a huge part for Isayama). If not then going good with your opinion is a pretty good route too. Like you said, it all depends on the audience. (I agree with you, by the way. Just stating another possibility, it's a rather rare one but it's still a possibility.)
Wow, this is a very awesome video. I often considered a career in the future as some sort of manga artist, but after seeing the competition and work that goes into it, I thought I would have no chance. This video really inspires me to look back into the mangaka career once again, so thank you for the awesome video!
So fun to see you meeting Åsa, I've read a lot of her manga stories :)
I remember how impessed I got hearing a Swedish person had made such progress in becoming a mangaka, and it is really inspiring. I unfortunately don't think I'll ever draw full manga stories, but I really enjoy making small comic strips or just simple pictures.
Thank you for letting us see this nice interivew! Greetings from Sweden~
Älskar dina mangaberättelser Åsa, de är otroligt fint ritade och har så mycket känsla. Ser fram emot att få kunna läsa mer i framtiden! :D
This gave me so much hope you don't even know! Ever since I was 12 I wanted to be a mangaka. Now I'm 19 and I still have the same dream.
How well can you draw?
Are you a mangaka now?
WOAH awesome video!!!

Thank you very much for this video! Being a manga artist is my dream, and I am glad to hear that foreigners really do have a chance of becoming one in Japan, although it may be difficult.
Sharla will you be making a part 2 to this video? I really hope so!
I feel like being in Japan will give you real exposure, web-comics have a sense of non-professionalism, and with ought an editor, you can only go so far in building real experience.
Look at the author of Attack on Titan as well, your art doesn't need to be perfect, your manga just needs to be interesting. So I guess that's good for those creative minds out there.
Thank you. This used to be my dream and it's lovely seeing someone live it out. She has lovely eyes too!
オーサさん!!四コマのブログ見ました!

Very interesting interview and genre. Its cool she studied manga and is doing professional work now =)
Your videos are always informative and entertaining I also appreciate your positive attitude - it's contagious!
Interesting video Sharla. Keep up the good work.
Oh my gosh I have to go show this to my family right now! They all doubt that it's possible. Thank you miss Asa for renewing my hope again!
Growing up I read Stall Norrsken (illustrated by Åsa) and aaaah, I can't believe you got to meet her! She's pretty popular here in Sweden and she's definitely one of my favorite artists.
love seeing a notification saying you posted a new video!!!! Love your videos Sharla!
That’s gave me a lots of hope thank u!! One day I will travel to Japan and become a mangaka and share the world my story’s
This is exactly what I needed... I've been dreaming about becoming a manga artist for a long time though I live in a country where that topic almost doesn't exist and no one takes it seriously. I don't have any support from my family either. They try to kill my dreams every single day but I don't want to give up so easily. I want to make a manga that would get successful enough to be adapted into anime - anime with a message to people who are in a similiar situation, who don't believe in themselves, who's got a really low self-esteem. I want to be a true example that everyone can fulfill their dreams and I want my work to be an existing proof. I hope I'll achieve that one day. Stay strong everyone and don't give up! I know it's easy to forget about your true passion but remember that Internet is full of creative and supportive people who can always cheer you up and bring you hope - just like that video! Thanks for uploading this!
this was a great interview, thank you very much! i'm loving the new content Sharla i'm glad you're doing more diverse stuff now that you're focusing on RUclips as a career ^^ i only wish you used a wider shot for the interview so we can see both of you clearly, but i'm sure it's because Japanese rooms are too small or maybe it needs a special lens lol
thanks a lot to Asa for talking to us about this interesting subject, i'm an artist myself so i respect the hard work she goes through ♥
OMG! It's her! I can't believe you actually got to do a video with you. I love her work.
This is a great video! I love reading manga so it's lovely to get to know a manga artist :) thanks sharla
Love it! I really enjoy this interview, even though I'm not much into manga I really think that is something interesting and very artistic :)
thank you! I'm really young as it is right now and is always told I'm amazing at sketching and I'm learning Katakana and planning on someday to move to Japan to peruse the dream I have of a manga illustrator! This is so helpful!
Thank you Sharla!!!!!!!!!1 Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!
This is super interesting! Being a manga artist in Japan was one of my dreams as a teenager. Thanks for sharing!
I'm eyeing that cintiq in the background, I have the same model ;DD
Great and informative video!
I can't be a manga artist, I can barely draw a decent potato.
+Eyo Potatoes make fries !
+Viet Lee Draw a yonkoma manga with a potato as the main character! Anything is possible.
holy shit you are fucking everywhere
+Eyo Not always I'm afraid. I've been practicing for like 20 years and just never got good enough and ended up switching to a different art style. But it's definitely worth it to give it your best shot and don't give up too soon.
LMFAO
Thanks for such a super awesome video!!! Bakuman was pretty much my only source into the world of mangaka before :P
I am currently going to an art school focusing in Illustration, concept art, comics, etc., and have always really been super interested in manga. Asa's art looks beautiful, and she seems to be so driven and nice! I am definitely going to check out her manga! :3
I love sayonara september soo much! 💙
I'm so happy that I got to hear about all this from the artist/writer
Thank you Sharla and Åsa you made my day 😁
Really great interview! When I was a teen in the late 90's all I wanted to do was become a mangaka, though I didn't know that word at the time. Even though I went to school for art I was just never very good at drawing aside from copying other work. So I ended up going into 3D animation, which can help with anime I guess, a lot of anime studios use the same 3D software I use, LightWave 3D. Bakuman is one of my favorite manga / anime though. I can't wait for the live action movie when it comes out in October. I will definitely check out Åsa's books, just bought the first Sayounara September!
Thanks for making this video & interview happen. I've wanted to try my hand at manga since I was a teenager, but only got to a skill level I'm slightly comfortable with just recently. I started a project, but was feeling kinda discouraged until I saw this video.
Thank you guys.
I'm probably gunna get a lot of weird comment but, I don't care! I want to make mangas like Jun Jou Romantica!:D Shungiku is awesome!
Haha me too ~
Do your best! がんばて!
+Isaki Tahashi OMG !!! I'm a fellow subscriber ♪( ´▽`) !!! Hai ~
Vanessa Reyes Haha; really? That's awesome! Thank you. And I totally support your dream!
+Isaki Tahashi Thank you !! It really means a lot from you :3
Hey Sharla thanks for this video it's helped me with my manga and has inspired me so thanks!
Super late comment, but if anyone else just found thus video like me. I just wanted to offer my experience as well. I did the thing they were talking about with going directly to an editor and showing them your manga. I went to Shueisha and anyone can go there. They even have the sign in forms in English. Anybody can do it, I just recommend being proficient in Japanese or bringing a friend because all your advice is in Japanese (the editor I had could speak a little bit of English and asked me to explain the theme of my manga in English) and he spoke extremely fast so it was hard to catch all of the advice. I think editors actually want overseas talent because it offers new stories and perspectives.
Loli-Pop thanks for the comment
Can Shuiesha or Kodansha get you a visa if they accept your manga?
awh she seems like a sweetheart! very happy for her success!
よし―! I'm interested in her manga now !!!!!!!!!!! and also, this just gave me a boost on my mangaka journey!!!
Thanks a lot for this video, I want to become a mangaka but I couldn't see the way, and I was very worried if living here (Spain) I could get recognition for my works in my own country and in Japan, but this video gave me confidence. Infinite thanks to you, Sharla and Åsa, you gave me hope!
Great video! Don't know why it was recommended to me by RUclips now of all times though.
It's wonderful to read the comments too, there is so much ambition and so many dreams. I hope everybody was able to make their dreams a reality.
Thank you it's really helpful I was scared to be manga artist but now I think I can do it
Great interview! My favourite category of manga has to be sports manga, so I hope one day Aso has plans to write one in the future :D I'll definitely check it out!
I never knew you could do part-time! Omg! That's totally what I want to do now since my dream is to become a Mangaka!
Woohaaa! This is soo cool! Thanks for this video Sharla! :D
I am also Swedish, heading for Japan, not to make manga, but I go with the goal to make my on anime series/ movies. My journey in Japan starts in Januari! :D In Tokyo to be exactly! :D
This is amazing! I have just started drawing manga recently mostly chibi stuff but I have been seriously thinking of doing this professionally this is a very good and informative video! If anyone has more info or advice it would be much appreciated!
Oh wait... I know her. Didn't she do some fabric designs for ikea? I have her designs on my curtains.
I love Sayonara September! So cool to see you interview Åsa
Her art is absolutely beautiful!!!! Amazing!
This video was so inspiring! I was loosing hope in my dream because it felt like I had next to no chance of achieving it...I haven't even told anyone that I want to be a mangaka...thanks to this video I have a new drive to follow my dream and work for it, thank you =)
Hi Sharla
I've (tried to) read "Sayonara September vol. 1" in Swedish, and loved what I could understand (I'm danish - language is somewhat similar yet not at all) - the style and the story is right up my alley. However I would really love to read it in English, yet I can only find it in ebook form - do you know where I can purchase it in a printed version?
Love you channel - keep up the good work! :3
At the moment the English versions are only on digital form :)
+Sharla in Japan 元気ですか!
Thank you so much for this video!! Is really nice to see she is able to live and work in Japan doing what she loves ^_^.
Yay new video! Hey sharla love the new video
thank you so much for making this video it really helped me out a lot love your vids
Thanks for the video it help alot. well on my way to learning how to speak and wright in Japanese! :)
Omg I wanna read those 😍😍 so inspring! Great video!
Thanks for the advice! Besides being a mangaka I also want to an anime producer I'm still in highschool and once I graduate I wish to move to Japan! :D
wohoo sweden represent! :) this was really inspiring. I don't wanna be a mangaka but a 3D animator and I feel this have some similarity to it. The 3D game and movie field is mainly men and I get to hear alot that I won't make it, because I'm a woman, and it's a "men's field". Hearing Åsa's story makes me feel more positive that I can make it aswell! heck, she even made it to Japan!
I'm studying graphic design 😍😍
Me too!!! :D
Me three!!! :D
Such great talent, thank you for sharing!
that sounds possible
you just breathed new hope into me thxx
Yay !!!!
Thank you so much for this video! :)
I have a small passion for wanting to become a manga artist. I am not good at drawing "manga style" so I think more practice will help a lot. :)
I am also studying Japanese and I have a few questions.
How long did it take you to be able to understand and speak Japanese?
And I have learned the Hiragana characters, but I'm lost on what to do next. I know that Japanese has a couple "alphabets" so I am getting a bit confused lol.
Thank you Sharla! And I definitely will be buying these books soon! (I'm too young to have a job lol) so I don't make any money haha.
Oh this made me so happy! I recognise her because I've read Sayonara September but also an illustrated book called ''namsdagsflickan''. I love the artwork in all of them! And it's so fun to hear stories like this that it's actually possible to pursue your dreams. It gives me and perhaps others the motivation to keep dreaming! :D
Thank you for this video! Great stuff :)
Whoa I really liked this! Thank you!
I'll be honest, everything I knew about manga in Japan was from Bakuman hahah so thank you for the video! It was wonderfully informative :)
本当に尊敬する。自分のやりたいことを見つけて、異国の言語や文化を学び、仕事にしている人達を。
シャーラさんも日本でRUclipsrとして活躍し、今は縁が有って韓国で同じように活躍している。凄いな~、としか。
This is so inspiring! Thank you!
Although not Japanese himself, I highly recommend watching Mark Crilley if you have the chance! He's a manga artist based in the states and does weekly tutorials, along with some insight into the industry. He's also spent a fair amount of time in Japan, and occasionally will share his experiences. :)
TyNeu oh and try whyt manga as well
Hey! My name is Katie, my sister Erin recently started a channel and she is making videos of her drawing manga. I was wondering if you have any advice on how to become successful on RUclips doing this?
Mangaka is my willing job right now and this really be an encourage. Wish I can get a place on Young Manga one day.
This was extremely informational and interesting! I'm not interesting in being a mangaka, but it's definitely interesting to know all of this, anyway. If I was going to get involved in any area of entertainment in Japan, I would want to be a dancer for bands(like EXILE), or a voice actor.
I wish to be a mangaka. And prove that foreigners can also be a mangaka. I will make my manga the no.1 best manga in the world and prove foreigners too can be a professional mangaka.
Belive it. I belive in myself. If you belive me i will prove you.
Just belive it.
I'm almost 16 and really want to move to Japan to study and live there. I absolutely love their culture and just everything about Japan itself. I'm planning on taking some Japanese classes to learn the language this year. I wanted to become a mangaka or manga editor but I did some research and was sad to realize the pay is not too well for those who are not well known. I really want to move there but I'm not sure what I would be able to do since I am not really sure what I want to study or get a job in. Can you please give me some advice? On how you got to Japan and what job you pursued there. I'm new to your channel so I'm very sorry if you have mentioned these in a video already. I found some colleges in Tokyo and Hokkaido for native English speakers so I'm going to look more into those and see if I can apply my senior year. I am also very interested on many things on the science/medical side, which is what I would like to study if I get accepted to the Universities.
I'm sorry this is so long I just wanted to get some advice from someone who moved to Japan and has been living there for a long time. Anyways I'm really glad your friend was able to pursue her dream!! ☺️ I hope you read this and are able to give me advice. Thank you !!! 💕
This is kind of a weird quinsidence for me (sorry for the spelling error) but last year in 9th grade our english book had an interview that they had with Åsa Ekström and now I'm like seeing you talking to her and I'm just like woaw!
(I'm from Iceland by the way but the english textbook is originally from Sweden.)
Her eye color!! Beautiful.
This is pretty cool for a couple reasons :3
1: Is that I speak English, Swedish and I'm still in a process of learning Japanese, so soon enough I could buy any version of her manga haha
And 2: Is that she really is an inspiration, I'm pretty much the same way as her, except the opposite haha. I love manga, like a lot-but I'm super in love with anime. And I want to become an animator (and probably) a manga artist, so it's cool that I have someone to look up too (also her eyes are amazing ;3)
Hey sharla ^^ this video was so cool :D it would be nice to see other videos like this more often ( if possible X3). Are the links in the description for sayonara september only digital :o ? I would like to buy it but 'paper' version :o thanks ^^!
+al bro The English version is only digital ^^
+Sharla in Japan oh noo :( thanks for the info ^^
It was my dream to become a manga artist, whether it was publishing from America or in Japan (mostly in favor of Japan) but I had heard that manga artists don't make very much money and so my mother told me she wouldn't support me living in a card board box. A little harsh but it destroyed my faith in my art abilities so I decided to go down a safe route. What is the salary really like for a manga artist? Did I give up my dream for nothing?
Man there is so many amazing people in this video's comment section
as i open this page, i pushed the like button 16times per second. whenever i see, non asians women but having bangs, i push the like buton which is deep inside me 1000000times
I was thinking about being a mangaka in Japan and go to the Tokyo Animation College, I'm African so I am trying so hard and seeing this made me want to try harder
this video was very helpful! But how about the other side? Like how do I become an editor or publisher of manga?
5:49 Better idea, head to kodakawa or shonen jump's office, you are sure to get editors there.
Im a writer/artist, and really want to publish my stuff, sadly the JLPT is standing in my way.
Awesome video! Loved seein this :D
I have friends who are mangaka and have told me all about the types of manga. Kodomo-muke (for children), Shojo (for teenage girls), Shonen (for teenage boys), Seinen (for adult men) and Josei (for adult women). I mean these are the 5 main demographic types. And if you want there are source books in Japanese or English that can confirm this. Some sites tend to get this wrong and source books are more consistent with the facts.
