How much concrete went into the dairy shed build?

  • The problems I’m encountering in my first days of dairy farming 😀😅 never one to run smoothly I’m telling you the problems we have faced early days. So we have just two cows that are proving annoying and causing issues but apart from that they are all settling in just fine, the long awaited answer to how much concrete went into the jersey cow dairy shed build? The cows cause havock and flood a building and they had only been here a few hours!!!
in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve
I will be taking you all along for the ride so hit that subscribe button and see you every other day for farming vlogs.
I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

Never need to apologise or explain.
Insulate the milk tank, reducing energy to keep it cool and be a thermal barrier preventing condensation.

May I suggest you get some calcium bottles and flutter valve incase a cow goes down with milk fever after calving. If you see one with signs then give them a bottle under the skin do not wait until they are down and can't get up as then they will need it in the vain.

hi charlotte, with reference to your cows eating the render, i suggest getting some stainless sheet folded into angle and screwed to wall. when i lived in kendal i used to work for TFM Enginnering at old hutton , 25 mins from you, give them a ring and they can fold you up angle any size to cover your damage, tell them you want some 16 guage stainless folded angle, folded slightly past 90 degrees so it grips the corner better, they can also put the holes in ready to screw to wall, i estimate about £50 each and would last forever( maintenance free)
back in the day when the tanker driver 'dipped the tank' which was a ruler in the tank to measure the quantity he was taking, we always filled our house milk jugs after dipping, driver always turned a blind eye for a coffee

Just a little aside, put in a pair of fans one sucking in an one blowing out and it will reduce the condensation ( depending on the weather of course) most of the time it will be dry and it will seriously reduce the amount of mould that grows also when you do have to wash the walls use an alkaline detergent on them and you will slow up the mould regrowth oh and put the fans as far apart as possible ensuring that the air coming in is fresh from the outside and it doesn’t matter where the humid air goes, it’s just the cheapest solution just plug them in on a timer so that they come on for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon it works ok and is a lot cheaper than running a dehumidifier 24 /7 however I noticed that you have a window ( eureka moment) replace the glass with fly screen and it might let enough air in to make a big difference, at least try that first as it is a negligible cost and depending on where your window is with regards to the variables it might just do the trick ( worked for us) we only have to wash the walls every year or two. Regards from Ireland, oh and don’t be in too much of a hurry to spend more money girl, you have just made a huge investment and it would be nice to get some bit of a return before you go ploughing more money into the operation, I would be inclined to get your grazing infrastructure up and running as your next priority as that will drive your profitability and the slurry storage is not just a slurry pit but also a bit of a money pit too. Good night girl.

Nice to see them settling in Charlotte, you need to get yourself a stainless steel dipping ladle for getting milk out of the tank, the farmer where i use to live got wrong for not using one, as he was just using a plastic jug for filling up his milk bucket for the house, and ours can't beat milk straight from the cow 😋😋

Great video, been on holiday and trying to catch up with your story. A women's rugby players name for the cow, Marlie Packer who is the captain of the captain of the England women's rugby union team and was born in Yeovil where I do. She is an inspiration for larger sized women of what can be achieved.
To make it easier for getting the milk out of the bulk tank you could use a stainless steel ladle with a long handle, just a thought, we used one when I were a lad on the farm.

I was born 1952 (yeah I’m old). My grandparents farm was located in Guernsey County Ohio USA. We had Jersey cattle. Watching your video where the cow comes up to inspect your coffee cup made me chuckle. Reminded me as a young boy not yet a teenager walking the herd to the barn for milking and how social, gentle and docile a Jersey cow demeanor truly is.

Going back over 40 years, our neighbours farmed Jersey and Guernsey cows as well as doing some arable. Small herd, milked with a portable machine and churns left outside the gate for collection. They made their own butter and we could go to them with a jug for milk or cream, all absolutely delicious.

As for "noises": Go to the settings (cogwheel), then Notifications and turn off all the things you don't want to keep annoying you. You can also tell it to keep quiet during silent hours. You need to get that humidity problem fixed asap before mold, rot and corrosion of your wood and wiring go to crap. How many cows is your barn able to handle at full capacity? Do you do AI yourself or will you have someone come in? Please chat with your veterinarian and get calcium boluses, IV calcium and whatever the drink mix is that cows are given right after calving along with whatever medications you may need to have on hand and what is safe to use with milking cows.

i think your right about allowing some fresh air into your tank room .......either a window or louvre vent perhaps but be warned the nice farm assurance people will get arsey about flies getting in there so you will have to have a fly screen over the window or vent. your slurry situation will be eased when the cows go out to grass.......i'm a big fan of grazed grass.......your cost of production will be a fraction of what it is when there housed all the time but how well a grazing system is going to work with robots i'm not sure. your cows appear to be milking well at mo but they say it takes 17 days for a change of diet to fully affect milk yield .........trying to prop up milk yield with purchased cake isn't going to be very profitable so you will need to make your silage good.......i know you got a lot on to see too but grass is at it's best through april/may so silage making time will be the next thing to think about.......our dairy farming neighbours here in Devon are busy doing there first cut silage this week whilst the weather is good

Also, as regards scraping out, cleaning beds off, clean saw dust on, look at getting some sort of swing up n over gates, or a single barrier pole, move the cows out, clean up etc, move the nxt lot, it's only the same as milking cows x2 day and taking them out to a parlour???
