"The Needle & The Damage Done" is a 1972 song written by Neil Young. The lyrics describe the effects of heroin addiction on musicians Young knew, including his friend & Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten, who would die of an overdose the same year the song was released.
My favorite Neil Young song. Written about the death of his roadie from heroin.
Very perceptive. There's quite an art while playing the acoustic guitar in some cases to add some rhythm to it and percussion by making use of the incredibly resonant body of the acoustic guitar. It's very prevalent in Spanish and Flamenco music.
But it's also used a lot in general and he was a very rhythmic guy. I saw him live in concert a couple times but he was always so rhythmic. He always found ways to add sounds, like one time before Crazy Horse came out, he was just doing acoustic sitting in a chair for the first part of the show, but they would sing backing vocals from behind the curtain with a spotlight going on the curtain when they were doing backing vocals, lol.
But since at that point it was acoustic and he had his harmonica just like this, they had the stage mic'd pretty heavily. And when he got to going, he would stomp one of his feet on the stage and it sounded like this huge booming kick drum. It was heavenly.
Damn, man, I hope you check out the album track of a fan favorite hit that he had with Crazy Horse, Powderfinger. Its historical storytelling and its really poignant but it's a banger:
My favourite Neil Young song.
I think you were looking for the word "strum"...strumming the guitar, but stroke works too...I knew what you were talking about.
One of the great singer songwriters of my generation thank you ❤❤❤
He is great❤
He is making that sound by "Palm muting". The heel of his hand it muting the strings to make the sound more "staccato" or punctuated. In the end of the "Stum", his palm hits the strings to stop them from ringing out quickly.
Yeah he's a lot older in this video, that's probably why he's wearing sunglasses. Great song though love acoustic songs could listen to them all day.
Neil can be the purest form of a one man band.........
Great Reaction....I think Neil is 25 + years older in the video...kepp asking the great questions man...that's how ya learn!
I did!! Thanks for doing this one Ace!
ONE OF THE BEST EVER!! 😍🐐🔥🎸
I believe the word you are looking for is "STRUMMING" the guitar. I tried to see a closeup of his strumming. I am NOT a guitarist but is looks like he is strumming on both the down and the up movement of his strumming. Is that even possible ? I have always found his guitar playing to be a tad "different" in it's sound. I have no understanding of why that is. If there are any guitar players out there please comment as I have always been curious about Neils style.
This is from MTV Unplugged (Neil Young). At Neil’s insistence, the entire performance was re-recorded, meaning a second time. There are many fine songs and performances from this night. Sunglasses had something to do with how Neil prepared for this before his set began. 🚬
every time he strums, he hits the bridge of the guitar with his palm to have a percussive effect. i do the same thing because it always made sense to me for some reason
My cousin lived next door to Neil Young up in one of the canyons. Malibu Canyon, I think. Saw him twice in 20 years. I've read that Neil Young has a big ranch in Northern California. Probably, mostly up there. Thanks for the reaction and memories, although sad, but still true Cheers from L.A.!
❤❤❤
Thanks, Ace.. a very powerful and emotional song... Neil was a fantastic musician and songwriter (although IMHO not a "great singer".. his vocals suited his content).. appreciate your reaction, as always...
Ace I would recommend Alabama for next Neil Young song.
😢 There is a really sad story behind this song. I'm not going into it, because it's that sad.
❤❤❤❤😢😢😢😢😢
Great reaction Ace 👏👏👏
The studio version is even shorter...
when Neil was with Crosby, Stills & Nash he butted heads with Crosby because Crosby loved having a spike in his arm and Neil was straight edge, Neil has always been a better solo artist so CSN was just short lived.
No reaction to the content of the song???
