I like both watches. Maybe Casio could combine the functions of both watches into one ultimate G-Shock. It will be known as the Rangeman Pro or the Grand Master G.

i was leaning towards rangeman mostly throughout my search of watch that would suit my needs.
however i now think i should let go and get the pro trek.
here is why i wanted the rangeman:
i dont care for it to be smart watch as much but feature of the gps in case im lost (happe ed in mountains before ..lol...mtb life) was so attractive. plus the solar power huuge plus. id hate to charge my watch bu daily.
BUT if i want the solar charge - well i got a little solar platform i cary w me (usb outlet) and as for daily use and charge well i guess ill bite the bullet and keep up w charging the pro trek.
one factor that stays though - gshock are just so damn good looking to me. perhaps i will get them in a year or something when the $ is down :)
    thank you
    badass review.

Well actually here’s the thing. I’m actually a ProTrek user. Never had a g-shock. But since they introduced triple sensor and also moon/tide graph in g-shock series, it started to intrest me because I love the concept of absolute toughness AND actually ALL the features of a ProTrek. Cheers.. can’t wait for wednesday!

Career Infantrymen like myself love these watches since in planning, I need critical data to know when the sunrise will be and things like barometric pressure. The downside is we don’t like wireless technology since it does give off a signal if “pinged” by enemy electronic defense devices, even if I have the device set to be silent and not in any active mode, there’s always back doors civilians don’t know about. The older Pro Treks work perfect since they’re completely “stand alone” technology so I don’t have to be concerned about that threat. I’ve worn the PRG-600 series for a long time since it’s a primary analog watch.
And please improve your vocabulary on the word “altimeter” and the letter T is never silent in other words you spoke.

I camp, and hunt. I look for good products at a reasonable price for what I need. I don't need much out of a watch. I dont want to rely on a device that may malfunction. I usually have back up for my needs. I would be good with the $300 casio. The thing about hunting and camping you can put a watch through the ringer like I have. That's why I can't justify buying costly outdoor watches. I never had a solar watch which means I wouldn't need one. The fact that you have to leave the $800 watch in the sun to charge, well lets just say that the solar is not a fast charger and you have to keep an eye on it while it charges in the sun. There are plenty of portable charging solutions so charging is not an issue. I'll take the protrek for $300 please and put the extra $500 into my investment property.

I would buy a Rangeman in a heartbeat if the price was comparable to the Pro-Trek, but it isn’t. Granted I love the ability to recharge the watch with solar power, but what I understand is that the Rangeman needs to be in basic mode, (no GPS running for the watch to charge relatively faster via its built-in solar cells. For my outdooring excursions I always pack a solar powered battery pack and I have a wind/solar battery charger as well, not the most compact device, but I can recharge my iPhone pretty quick.
I like the many features of the Pro-Trek, but I’m not crazy about the limitations with using it with an iPhone. I just wish that darn Rangeman wasn’t SO EXPENSIVE!
Thanks for the awesome review it was exactly what I needed to decide between these two watches. (Not that I’ve made a solid decision yet, but I’m currently leaning towards the Pro-Trek because I can get it at nearly one-third the price of the Rangeman!
Also people, some seem to think these are different brands, but the Rangeman and the Pro-Trek are made by Casio. It’s just one is from their “G-Shock” line and the other is from their “Pro-Trek” line.

    • @usefulEDC

@@usefulEDC I did get the Garmin Solar tactical Instinct. It’s a nice basic smartwatch with GPS capabilities, but it pale in comparison to the Rangeman’s ability to recharge via the solar cell! My Rangeman, (yes I have that too now), recharges quickly and easily in normal time keeping mode. The Garmin doesn’t recharge very well unless I turn it off and leave it in direct sunlight for several hours, otherwise holding it in sunlight while it’s on pretty much only slows the battery discharge. I love my Garmin Instinct as an all around watch with GPS capability, but in a survival situation or even hiking/camping, there Rangeman keeps going very well. My only issue with it is that you must use your smartphone to Mark waypoints or plan routes ahead of time and send them to the watch.

Agreed! The WSD-F30 is a beast of a watch. Cannot wait for it to come out! We actually did a review of that watch as well. Did you get a chance to check it out yet?
